Nine wolves found dead during gun deer season

By Paul A. Smith of the Journal Sentinel

Dec. 21, 2009

Nine wolves were found dead in Wisconsin during the recently completed gun deer season, including eight that appear to have been illegally shot.

The dead wolves were found in Adams, Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett,  Douglas, Jackson and Monroe counties; one each was also found shot on the Lac du Flambeau and Stockbridge Indian Reservations.

The Department of Natural Resources had 61 wolves fitted with radio collars prior to the November gun deer season. Four of the collared wolves were among those found dead.

The dead wolves are being necropsied at the DNR's Wildlife Health Laboratory in Madison. Preliminary evaluations indicate eight died of gunshot wounds and one was killed by other wolves, said Adrian Wydeven, DNR wolf ecologist.

Anti-wolf sentiment in Wisconsin has risen in recent years as the wolf population has increased; many hunters blame wolves for a decline in the deer population.

Wolves in Wisconsin are currently protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Six wolves were found dead in Wisconsin during and just before last year's gun deer season. Nine were found shot during 2006 gun deer season, said Wydeven.

In an average year, vehicles kill about two dozen wolves in Wisconsin, according to state records.

The DNR estimated Wisconsin had between 626 and 662 wolves before the 2009 breeding season. The next estimate will be released in late winter 2010.

How hard is it to see that they were shot.... now we need to send them off to a specialist,(on our dime), just to determine they were shot.  I bet it was tough to preform that autopsy.  Hmmm. Small hole on one side and big hole on the other.  Maybe Mange?  Fleas?

Funny how they count the deer high and the damn wolves low.

Hope santa doesn't have them count his reigndeer, 'cause he would have about 40 hooked to his sled by the DNR's count.

?9? is that all?

Looks like they estimate wolves differently than deer. "Way to many deer" and a "SUSTAINABLE" number of wolves??   ??? RIIIIGHT!!!!

They found 3, counted them each 3 times and came up with 9. That is the DNR way of counting. :-[

I don't blame the wolves for the lack of deer. It's more likely the fact that the DNR is made up of to much edjumakation and not enough common sense.Even in areas that have no wolf population and small number of coyotes the deer are few. Some parts of WI are almost without deer.Yet the DNR still says it has to many.
Face it guys.It is the auto insurance companies that run the deer management part of the DNR.

So if you do the math, that’s 6.6% of the ones with collars.  So that would put that actual kill number at 44.

Not including the deviation resulting from wolves passed where a collar was noticed in the crosshairs. ::)

It is preferable to gut shoot them, much better if they run off and die just in case they have a radio collar. Some good old boys shot one here in MN and wired the collar under a car they knew was from out of town. Was tracked to the Twin Cities where the DNR found it.  :D

Too bad that many survived. Maybe we can do a better job next year. Pretty soon we will probably see more wolves than deer.

I got a question. What about the coyotes as appooes to the wolves as a cause to the demise of the deer population. I ride a bycicle for excercise where I live. I've been out in the morning riding on a back road when I've heard about 20 to 30 coyotes. I also hear them at  night. right around sundown. I'm only 3 miles out of town.    NOBODY HUNTS THEM ANYMORE.... THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!!!!! If we in wisconsin want to have quality deer, we have to control the overabundance of the predators. The wolves are protected, but the coyotes are not. THEY are one of the biggest threats!!

Yes, buckskin, that makes 44 wolves if the # of wolves is 650 in Wisconsin. If there are 1300 in wisconsin logic would tell us there were really about 88 wolves shot! Now 88 wolves might have been shot, but wait, we all know not to shoot a wolf with a collar on right? So the real question remains. How many wolves were really shot in Wisconsin? This is just the 9 day gun season too. So 9  is a very low number, and 44 is most likely a low number too.The real kicker is it won't even hurt the wolf population. Less wolves would have been shot if big "O" in D.C. would would have kept them off the endangered list because people started resenting wolves when they went back on.

Don't let the DNR read this. They'll come up with another couple dozen positions for people to study these vermin and we'll have to fork out MORE money for their paychecks as well. Can't have enough people pushin' paper and keeping a job for themselves. I'm sure that they may have already funded several personnel to do just that already! They could send half a dozen field specialists here where I live and keep busy a couple of years I'm sure. Coyotes are WAY overpopulated here as well.

I sure would like to whack a wolf.  Good thing I don't live up north as I know I could not resist and would be in trouble within a short time.
Wonder if a "meatsickle" would work on wolves?

Think positive, they only found 9 dead wolves, might be 100 or more dead with out collars.

Thanks Cheese, I'm sure 50 were really shot. If 100 were shot it wouldn't be enough to keep them from expanding their range and numbers. So what the heck maybe I would shoot one someday but I still have yet to see one. Them 9 wolves were just our way of saying happy holidays to the DNR
