I hate these questions.  I have no real interest in varmints.  So...I guess...300win and 375HH.  At least I know the 300 will take everything almost anywhere at great distances if needed (and it's seldom needed).  I can load it down if I have to I suppose.

Or...a 270 or 06 and the 375...or a 338....

I give up.

Take my guns...all of them...I quit.

:D

I would have to keep my  Sharps 45-70 for pure pleasure and great power for a black powder gun or  and  my 91/30  7.62x54 (308) for the longer range (smokeless gun)

I only own 3 centerfire rifles for hunting, .308, .30-06, and a 7mm. Since the 7mm is so close to the 30-06 in balistics except with a bit more energy and trajectery I have not shot my 30-06 in about 6 years. So for me it's the 7mm and the .308, and the rest of my money goes towards hunting trips!

22-250 and 30-06.  If I lived where there is bigger big game I might move up to a 243 and a 35 Whelen.

An easy question for me, since I only own 2 centerfire rifles:
a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow in .270WSM and
a Howa 1500 in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser (bought for my boys).
I will keep my .270 Short Magnum for all big game up through Elk and Moose.   If it can't be killed with a 140 gr Nosler Accubond or 150 gr Partition, then I shouldn't be shooting it.  3,000+ fps with good sectional density and controlled expansion should do the job.
AS for the other rifle, if it was for me , then I would opt for a nice Varmint rig in .223 remington, probably a Savage with laminated stock.  I enjoy shooting varmints and in .223 Remington, the barrels last a lot longer than the 22-250 or 220 swift, and probably last longer with less fouling problems than a .204 Ruger.  The nice thing about the .270 short mag is that it can do double duty on long range varmints.  The 90 gr Sierra at 3600 fps isn't too bad to shoot and should be quite effective.

.243 and 30-06 will cover just about everything that I plan to hunt.  I just don't think I will get an opportunity to hunt for alaskan coastal brown bear anytime in the near future.

The first one would be a .223 Remingon. The second: probably a .338-06 although a .308 might be more useful if I just hunted around here in eastern Kansas.

A .223 Remington and A .375 H&H Magnum.
223 for plinking/varmints/defense
375 for EVERYTHING ELSE (can be loaded light with light bullets for deer, or heavy enuff to drop elephants)
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.

I would have to go for 25-06 and a 338-06. They will handle anything I have in mind. They can be made from common brass and use the same powders. Bullet range from 75 grains to 250 +.

Could I have one more gun if one of them was a switch Barrel ?

Please.

A 30 06 in a Winchester Model 70 featherweight and a 348 in a Winchester Model 71. I would have a great mountain and plains gun in the 06 and the timber rifle in the Model 71. Both pretty classy too I might add!

.243 and 300WM should cover most hunting situations in North America.

WEll if i could only keep 2 rifles it would be a 22-250 and a 30-06, i mean it doesnt matter because the 30-06 could do it all by itself. But i am not a big fan of the 06', i mean im sure its a great rifle but I am big into hot calibers and other calibers just seem to beat it out at there prime grains. For example if i was shooting varmints i would much rather have a 22-250. .220 swift, etc, and if i was shooting elk i would much rather use the more powerful 180 grain of a of a .300 mag , 160 grain of the 7mm, or the 2000 grain of the .338. WOuld also much rather have a .270 for whitetail. haha but who am i kidding the '06 is a greeaat rifle

That's a tough one. But for the hunting I'm likely to do I'd have to say a light weight mounting rifle in .270 Win (preferably CRF, probably a pre 64 M70 fwt).

For the second one, my clasic custom FN M98 .308 Norma Magnum. Loaded with the right bullets it would be good for anything on the American, Asian and African continents except for the big 5 and tiger and for these I could borrow one of the PH's "big" gun (probably a .470 Nitro or something of the sort). The great .308 Norma Mag is my candidate for the bst all round rifle.

Well...since there are rimfires that can cover most all varmint hunting now...and the trusty 12 gauge...that can cover most of the edible rest...really...the decision comes down to big game hunting...and long yardages...and accuracy of target shooting.....and what you like to do...

Limiting oneself to just 2 centerfires to cover the spectrum from the big 5...the big bears and everything else in-between down to antelope can be covered by several different calibers depending on your thoughts of bullet weight and velocity...and your preferences to either standard loadings or magnum loadings...and rifle configuration...ie; single shot, bolt action,semi-auto,double gun...

The smallest caliber should be able to double for as many of the routine shooting needs as one would normally encounter...so.. for me...my first choice is easy...it would be a 270 Winchester...in the most accurate action I have...I'm not really handicapped on any shooting or hunting this caliber is good for...from elk on down...and they have a great selection of components and ammo available for it...

The second choice is a bit more difficult...since I don't have any first hand knowledge on african animals...or any of the larger species that would require massive amounts of fire power...but from all my readings and listening to this very subject...I would be drawn to aquiring a cartridge/rifle suitable to carrying on the plains of Africa..or in the thickets of Alaska...capable of dispatching the largest and meanest of animals...while still offering loads capable of taking smaller animals at reasonable distances...so for the DG gun...I would choose a fine  H&H double gun in 375 Magnum...

Even though there are more choices and I would never want to be limited to only 2... I believe these  would fill my needs adequately...

I've read all the posts.  At one time or another, I've owned rifles chambered from .375 H&H down to the .223.  Handloaded for all of them.  Lever actions, bolt actions, semi-automatics.  There was never anything said about a survivalist situation where ammo was scarce.  There also was nothing said about not having lots of reloading supplies on hand.

Ammo a problem?  .223 & .308.

Ammo plentiful?  .223 & anything from 7mm on up
The .375 H&H can be loaded to shoot anything from elephant to hogs.  I miss my .375 H&H in Win 70 Safari
The 30 cal magnums can probably handle anything on the North American continent without problems.
However, my Marlin 45-70 lever action can easily handle anything walking on earth within 200 yds with proper loads.

Hard choice, dang it!!! :?

22-250

and

.308

BUT

if money was no option, a .338 lapua mags that AR sells.

In that case, i'd also want a Kimber in .243 for varmints and smaller than deer sized game.

I agree. A good bolt action 270 will cover everything I need in a centerfire rifle.

If given the choice of a second rifle it would simply be something shorter, handier and easier to carry all day: a lever action in 45 Colt or 30-30.

7mm mag for the rest

Can anyone name a situation anywhere in the World where a 2 gun battery of a .243Win and 375H&H wouldn't work? From varmints to elephants...

I can't. But I would still choose the .223 instead for my "little gun".
