.357 Handi for Christmas
« on: December 12, 2009, 10:49:49 PM »
Friday I went to one of the local dealers sight seeing. I have been watching for a Handi .357. Well the second Handi I picked up was a new plastic(mc)stock .357,  $258 out the door ;D. Typical thin bluing, even on the receiver? Not case colored. Box says sb1 :-\. I expected that anyways. The gun is tight, open or closed. Has the new long squared for end, really like that. Recoil pad is a smooth spongy rubber, I really like that.

Talked with momma, money is slow right now. But I do have one extra Mosin sooo it is on the market now. We ran to town to Christmas shop, first stop Gun shop ;) Merry Christmas to me, put it in the car and drove away ;D. Did spend the rest of the day amongst the crowds with momma(everyone is happy)

Got home pulled it out the box. Starting taking apart to clean. Momma gave me the funniest look. Then asked "why do you have to take everything apart?" I commenced to blame you guys. Told her you all said they shoot like crap unless certain things were done (thanks for covering my back):D. Anyhoo, tried to pull the forend off. Took both hands and some effort. Put the oring on, still to tight. Put a thin shim between the forend and stud, can now slide dollar bill in. Finished stripping gun cleaned latch shelf(thanks Quick) cleaned other excessive areas. Reassembled. Installed a Bushnell 4x12x40 ao. Maybe today i can get a few minutes to send some rounds down range.

Hopefully before spring I can get on Quicks list for the Max reamer. I have a T/C Max 14", hopefully they will get along ;)

Just trying to do my part, making sure all Handi's find good homes :)

Just a side note. Talked with the gun guys a bit, found they do gun transfers all the time. I just have to call and let them know where to send their info. Oh yeah $15.

Great job, and those .357 Magnums are probably the best shooters right out of the box!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

 Thanks Jimbo47

I got bored a bit ago. Got the newbie out(.357) Tried it on my SB2 frame which has a .223 on it now. Fit as good as original frame  ;) I guess I no where the .357 barrel will go when she gets reamed to Max ;D

I have been reading and searching all morning. I can not find a max pressure on the SB1 frame. I did read a few are leaving .357 max on the SB1. .357 max pressure is said to be 40,000. I am sure it is doable, but is does it leave room for pressure fluctuation?

Merry Christmas :D  You're gonna love it, and by all means, do the Max.  I put mine on a SB2 frame.

My .357 Max will be staying on it's original small firing pin SB1 receiver.  I sent it back for a 20 gauge barrel and a Topper Deluxe Classic walnut stock too.

Get ready for a lot of fun, particularly if you handload. I've had a blast playing with mine and my son took a doe with it earlier this season.  Don't get discouraged if you don't get one inch groups out of the box, mine didn't. After a few trips to the range/deer camp, it tightened up all of a sudden.  Just needed enough rounds through it. They are definitely shooters!

Lonny, you done good. ;) I looked at one Friday, they wanted $300. Thought that's too much for a sb1 frame. Boy they sure feel good though don't they? :-*
Gander mtn. wanted $80 for a ffl trans. ;D ;D I found another guy wants $30. I like that $15 you found. :o But that's what keeps me from buying too much off the classifieds ;D Have fun with that baby, I'll have one someday :)

Standard industry working pressure for the .357 Max is 48,000 CUP, so it would probably be better on the SB2 frame.

So far the only issues anyone has had with the Max on SB1 frames is primer issues, a change in primers has always solved that problem, there have been a LOT of SB1 357Maxes done here. Considering the 44mag has a SAAMI MAP of 40kcup and a much larger case head at .457", the smaller .379" case head of the Max shouldn't present too much breech thrust.  ;)

Bud's does have a better price listed, but not in stock + shipping+ transfer fee+ wait time = I wait longer and pay a little more ;)

Mine was $256.79 out the door, and only a 10 minute atf check ;) It took longer for momma to look at handguns than for me to hold the rifle with receipt.

bigvarmnt
Yes it feels right at home in my arms ;) Had to  much to do today. Will have time tomorrow to shoot.

BrianB

From what I have read it appears you are right a dirty girl is better ;) Told my wife I need to shoot 100 rounds or so, so it would shoot good. She said it sounds like a waste of ammo. Like Dinny said, some women just dont understand ;D

Quickdtoo

Thanks, I didnt think about the .44 pressure(and i have one ::))  I will probably leave it on the SB1 frame and just watch it. Appreciate your input.

All of Bud's prices include shipping, transfer fees aren't included tho, but it's a good idea to keep an eye on their stock if you're looking for something, his prices are hard to beat.  ;)

Please don't misunderstand. I was not speaking negative of Bud's. I use them for most of my online pricing. I do know they have good prices.

I was just saying, I like to walk in and pick up and hold things before I buy them. This shop keeps decent prices. They have to, they have a Dick's and Bass Pro and a major gun store all within about a 1 1/2 miles.

The Contender gets a regular work out. Anytime we take guns out to just shoot, she comes along every time ;)
She is to much fun to shoot, and the kids love it as well ;)

Tim-
Do you have a similar PDF for the 357 Mag to compare loads, velocity, and pressure? Couldn't find them
on Accurate's web site.

That is until the Handi came home.  Only time will tell, we'll wait to see. ;)
