jdt48653,
It is a strange fact that the Europeans came here and push out the Indian peoples that were here because they needed more land and were running from a place where people were doing to them what they were doing to the Indians, go figure.

I would've been a Billy Yank during the time 1861-1865...BUT, here's the reason why: my family all lived in Indiana during that time, and I would've fought on the side of my state. It's as simple as that.
(Several of my great-great-granduncles and my great-great grandfather all fought in Indiana regiments during that war).
So, I would have fought on the side of the Yanks for what is often seen as a uniquely SOUTHERN reason, oddly enough: loyalty to my state and my kin. I might have disagreed with the side my state "chose" to fight on at the time, but once the decision had been made I would have put on a blue uniform, just as General Lee disapproved of secession but once the Old Dominion had made the decision he went with his state.
I have nothing but respect for the southern point of view on several of the issues concerning the war regarding state's rights; and I don't think the war was really about slavery, either. And the Confederate Army was one of the greatest fighting outfits that ever organized into ranks in human history; they fought with honor, bravery, and distinction.
But I'd still have been a "bluebelly" during the period 1861-1865 for the reasons I mentioned, plain and simple, no bones or apologies about or for it. I would've gone with Indiana.

But for a 4 year stint in the USMC, I've never lived south of the 43rd parallel in the US.  Before I started thinking about such things, I was a Union sympathizer.

For the last ten to twelve years or so, after realizing that the Federal government is out of control and after realizing that the Constitution does not forbid secession, I greatly favor the Confederacy.  I absolutely despise how hollyweird and the media treat the South.

Although I choose to live in the upper midwest (I'm not a fan of hot weather), I am much more a  Southerner in attitude.

Today, of course, I am an "American", a citizen of the United States.

Then, I would have worn Grey.  That's the way I think, feel, believe.  All of my ancestors of that time, that I know anything about, lived in the South, and stood with the Confederacy.  My G-Grandfather, his Father and Brothers, Cousins, and kin wore the grey uniform, most with a Texas Star.  General Thomas Charmichael Hindman, CSA, was my Grandfathers Great Uncle.

Yep!  I'M A REB!

I'm torn on this one. My family were very strong abolistionist (their house was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad), and my ancestor was the commanding officer of the 124th Pa volunteers. All my life I have been pro Union, but in recent years as I have tried to honestly study the issues I find myself leaning more  as a southern simpathizer (with the exception of slavery). Robert E Lee was an anti slavery southerner so I guess it is possible. I guess I could say that I break ranks with my pro Union family and join the ranks of my distant relatives who fought for the south.

Well I view the War Between the States as a Northern Agression war, and I view the North as pretty much evil throughout the 19th century.

And most of my favorite groups, with the exception of Ted Nugent, are Southern Rock groups.

However, I also abhore slavery, so if I had lived in that era I would have been neutral and headed for New Mexico territory, Arizona territory, Indian territory or Mexico.

I might add, several freed slaves and Mexican characters headed to these territories. I would have treated them as equals, along with the Native Americans, or any other groups. I likely would have been in a band that was a mix of all these types (if that ever really occurred) and would have resisted the US influx into the territories, along with rejecting statehood.

My heart is with the South, but my family was all in Ohio at the time so I would have had to go with Custer with the Yanks.  Even though my heart might been with Dixie I can't go against family!--Willy

Johnny Reb thru and thru  " Is there any other kind "  Been all over the world, thanks to the U.S.Navy. But I was born in Georgia and Lord willing I'll die here, too. In all my travels I've not been in a better place with nicer folks. These sights, smells, and sounds of the rolling green hills and red clay of Georgia. I love it so :D

Rebel, through and through!   I suppose in my mind the Confederacy lives today.  Cross the Mason Dixon and you're in a foriegn country so to speak.

Call the war what you wish.   War of Northern Aggression, Civil War, War Between the States.... etc etc...     What it boils down to is that the yanks couldn't mind their own damned business!!!!!!!!!!

I've lived in Pa my whole life, my ancestors fought and were killed or wounded fighting for the North, but seeing now how everything with big business and big brother is now, I have to choose the Butternut and Blue!! but in that time, based on media portrayal (nothing has changed) I'd probably have stayed in the North. Everyone says slavery was bad, and I am positive there were some very wicked owners and traders. I am also sure that many slaves who where transpanted here had it much better off being in servitude. I base this on the fact that many stayed on to work teh plantations for room and board and small pay BECAUSE no one wanted them in teh north, and some states were trying to pass laws prohibiting them from residency. I thinks it funny that teh first slave to come to teh colonies were not even black--they were indentured Europeans who wnted to leave the tyrants-and yes most were white!! Give me my rifle and gray kepi EC, I'll fit fer ya and yer states wrats! Let's go get em!!!!

I was born here and my people weren't here during the war they came here after the war.  But i do find the history of the war very interesting.  It seems the war isn't over with some so the bitterness still continues today. I think there is a rebel in all of us just fighting to get out.   BigBill

I have ALL of his Paperwork and Everything on him and his Family Proven out.
Oh, and also Yes, my Family Owned Slaves. There ain't a thing I can do about that now, and I Do Feel Slavery IS Wrong. It was a Product only of the Economy of the time in which my Ancestors Lived.
And, I have significant Proof that Robert E. Lee IS Related to me by Marriage, by Distant Cousinship.

All of my family on my Dad's side are from the Ft. Worth Texas area, all of my family on my Mom's side are from Germany and settled in Minnesota. While in the U.S. Army I found it strange how when I was in the South the subject of the Civil War came up over and over again, to the point of fights breaking out in the clubs on occation. I was warned that the Civil War was still being fought by the South before I enlisted. Living in the North I can't recall the subject ever coming up. If I had to choose I would choose the North because they had a superior fighting force and better tactics as an army. No disrespect to the South, a neutral view.

Both and on the side, had them killed and murdered in Andersonville and Jefferson Barracks and that terrible day in Gettysburg, some came home and died from their wounds.Every family suffered in one manner or another.I knew two Civil War soldiers who later died in the 50's.

Maggot,
a majority of the fighting was done on Southern soil, supply chains and other tactical decisions had to be addressed by the North. In 1863-64 Lee admitted to having a weaker force and had to resist the temptation to engage the North head to head. Two loses at Petersburg and the final one at Appomattox ended it. When I said superior fighting force/ tactics this is what I meant. With the military being so much in the news today it is frustrating to see troops waiting or in need of supply and the logistics involved in doing it.

Guys I don't understand something. For those of you who are Southern and agree with the rebels...how can you think it right to imprison people against their own free will and enslave them to incredulous chores? But...I am a Yankee and when I was in Gettysburg our guide brought up something interesting. "If the South had won...would their still be slavery?" The somewhat obvious answer is no. When John Deere invented the tractor some 40-60 yrs. later I'm sure slavery would have been diminished to the point of non-exisitence. But anyway...I still don't get it. How would you like it if someone just put chains on you and said, "WORK DAMN IT!!". That's more or less the size of it. And you're telling me you wished the Confederates won? Just to make the South feel supremace? Come on.
