New Handi Owner
« on: October 31, 2009, 05:57:20 AM »
Hi guys, new to this site and the Handi-Rifle.I have a slight concern since I knew little about the guns until after I bought this one used last night. It is a .243 and the ser# starts NM(New England 1998 according to the FAQs section),I see that there is some years there that may not be as desireable as some and mine falls in the range. What is the deal with the 1996-1999 guns?Should I try to unload this one at the gunshow this weekend. It is to be my 9yr old daughter's first gun,so if there are issues with it,I dont want to risk her safety.

H&R won't fit any high pressure barrels to them since they were outsourced, I suspect they'll fit 357mag and 44mag barrels to them, but I haven't got a definite policy on that yet.

Thanks,I did some more snooping and found some posts that you entered in 07 on the subject.Mine is an SB2(checked forearm radius, small firing pin,and it is steel, not the "pot metal").I guess I got lucky???Paid 140.00 for it with a scope mounted on it.Was originally a regular Handi, but the stock has been shortened some for kids to shoot.Kinda wish it was wood so I could do more to the butt.....Oh well,we will make it work,if not i have a new coyote gun!!!Thanks for your reply

Look around the handi classifieds and find a wood stock, They all fit pretty much and the .243 is genrally a pretty good rifle. Parts are pretty abundandt around here.  Welcome to the site. 8)

Hi and welcome.  I don't believe there are safety issues with it.  Just shoot it and see what it can do.  I believe if there were safety problems they would have been recalled in a heart beat.  Some folks have good luck with them and others do not.  Best to try it first.

Thanks guys,Ive been out of hunting and shooting for the past 9yrs.I was looking at getting back in and out of nowhere my daughter asked about going hunting.I started her a couple of weeks ago with my 10/22 and she surprised me for someone who had never even held a gun,so I put off buying my new Ruger  and went and bought her all the gear she needs to hunt.Just picked up the rifle last night. As for having "luck" with a gun,Ive never found one that I couldnt shoot deer with.just need patience at the range and the willingness to say, maybe those high dollar, overloaded shells will not work in this gun or vice versa, maybe the 3.99/bx stuff from Academy aint cutting it.Either way, that will be part of the exprience for my girl, kinda like a project we can do together.Look forward to picking you guys' brains on this thing.BTW,my first gun was a H&R .410 back in 1982 or 1983,I think.I still have it in the closet.

Come out of the closet and take it with you.  The .410 is a neat little shotgun.  Enjoy ;D

Welcome to the Handi convention ;) I am sorry to hear you had to pass on a Ruger. But I really like hearing someone taking the time to bring a child to the sport. Congrats.

Ok, I finally got a ruling on what rifle barrels they'll fit to the '96-'99 SB2 frames, they'll fit whatever was on it originally, plus 357mag or 44mag.

Good info,I will never need anything other than the .243 that is on it unless there is a .223 barrel for them?

That's silly Tim!

The 243 isn't exactly a low pressure cartridge. Yjey should fit anything in that pressure range. Gotta wonder sometimes.

Gardner had the same policy pre-'99 frames, they'd replace a defective barrel with the same chambering, but wouldn't fit any other high pressure barrels to it, those marked with an * on the accessory barrel list.

I do understand them covering their A$$ on this, but still many of these frames had high pressure barrels on them anyway, I have one that originally had a 280 barrel fitted to it...
I do not believe them to be useless or unsafe, I believe they are a good option to have around for those that aren't afraid to fit up their own 2nd Hand barrels.
