357 max barrel
« on: September 03, 2009, 02:24:22 AM »
I'm about to pick one of these up(hopefully). Any idea how they shoot? I shoot a whole lot of 38 special(have 3000 158gr LSWC loaded now..) and I think it would be a fun barrel. I shot a buddy 357 max out of his TC and it was great. Anyone have one and can give me some more info on how they shoot?

I was reluctant to ream my .357 because it shot mags and .38s wonderfully.  I got a second .357, also a shooter, and reamed the first.  It didn't change a thing.  It's a tack driver.  The .38s shoot a little high at .38 range, but group well.  I love the versatility of the rifle, and you will too.  Go for it :D

Thanks Pete! I shoot a lot of 38's because they are cheap to reload and shoot great in my S&W Model 10. my plan is to put a 4x on the handi and I think it will be a great shooter. Anyone else have experience?

I put a red dot on mine.  It's not MOA with it, but you get fast target acquisition, shoot with both eyes open and don't loose your target, especially in woods.  It's "minute of deer".  Simply great in low light.  You don't have to center anything.  The dot is where the bullet goes, and it is very fast.  I've got two now, and will eventually put them on all the short range rifles, .445 Super Mag, .30-30, .357, etc.  If you want a hundred fifty yard tack driver, it's not for you.  I have other rifles and scopes that will do that as far as you can see.

Hmmm Well hopefully it will be good for shooting at the range too. My buddy has a tc with a tc custom shop 357 max($350+!!! just for the barrel  :o  ) and we shoot the steel rams at 200 yards with it all day. Hopefully we can get some loads to work for it because otherwise I will never hear the end of it for being cheap and not getting a tc! When you say it's not a tack driver do you mean with the red dot you have or just the barrel in general?

If that Maxie doesn't range the rams bell I'll be surprized !!! Just work up some good loads.
Some guys on here use 180 grain bullets and accurate 1680 Powder, having good results.

The barrel/rifle is superb.  The red dot is too large and covers too much of the target to be MOA.  One of the guys here suggested sighting in at the edge of the red dot at 6 o'clock and it would work well.  I haven't tried it yet.

Both of the ones I'm playing with are cheap ones, till I learn more about them.  The .44 wears a TruGlow 5 MOA dot and the .357 an A1 Optic 4 MOA dot.  So far, they both work well and stand up to recoil.  They're both under 50 bucks, so if they crap out, I'm not out much.  All I can say is try one.  If it's junk, chuck it.  They've got about a hundred rounds each under them and doing well.

Mine is a factory H&R maxi barrel. It shoots 180 Hornady's at 2200fps and shoots under an inch @ 100 yards. I also had TWO maxi contender barrels, while both where accurate, neither would shoot as well as my Handi. Mine shoots mags very well and 38 spls minute of beer can @ 25yards. Plenty accurate for my nieces and nephews to stay interested. In maxi its downed over a dozen deer, all I can remember where bang flops. Mine wears an old M8 Leupold 3X with a german #1 reticule.

Here she is with my 454 casull handi in gray stocks. The maxi is the mannlicher stocked handi.

I have a 357 that I reamed to Max. I am shooting a lot of 148 grain HBWC in mine. I am getting very good accuracy out of it. I was shooting 2.6 grains of Bullseye. I have now stepped it up to 3 grains. I did that so POI did not shift so much between the 357 Max and the Wad Cutters. I use the 38 Specials with the Wad Cutters for backyard pests. It is low noise and enough power at short ranges to be lethal. I have shot 5 'coons, 2 skunks and a couple of chipmunks. No misses so far. I probably could have shot more, but my wife did not want me to until the pests started to dig up her flowers. After the second time, she said she wanted them %#*# 'coons dead. I obliged her. The skunks and 'coons have literally roto-tilled the back yard. My 357 is wearing a 2.5X Tasco shot gun scope. I have two of them, but they are discontinued now. I can make 1 ragged hole at 25 yards with the Wad Cutters and shoot about 1.5 MOA with 357 Max and 180 grain bullets. I think I could do better, if I fully bedded the fore end and did a little more load development. I just have not got around to it yet. Mine shoots 125 grain Remington SJHP fairly well too. I get around 2300 fps and they too make 1 ragged hole at 25 yards. I tried to up the velocity of the 125 grainers, but the accuracy went South, so 2300 for works for me and they still make a mess out of any thing they hit. No ricochets here. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Marv,

I have an old style low hammer on my 35 Whelen Improved, had to trim the back edge of the barrel release to clear it.

I could put one on, if there was a clearance issue, a quick trim like Tim mentioned would work nicely. But It really dosen't need it.

I've been looking for frames for barrel I just bought. Should I just go and by a SB2 45-70 and use that frame or should I go buy a shotgun for $107? Will the SB1 frame handle the pressure of the 357 max? I'm in college and money is tight so I'd rather go the cheaper route but I'm not sure if that would be the right way to go about it.

CW's maxi is on a case hardened frame in the pic above. Unless it is off a less common BC SB2, I assume that it is an SB1.

Gotcha, so yes or no too the sb1 receiver? I understand that the shotgun sb1 receivers weren't case hardened therefore you can't have anything but shotgun barrels and 357 mag and 44 mag on them. Would the 357 max's pressures be too high for that frame?

There have been a couple that have done the Max rechamber on an SB1 with no problems, primer issues would be the problem most likely to occur, so be alert to that if you do one, several members including myself have experienced perforated primers with the Max on SB1 frames, mine were with Dan Wesson factory ammo.
