I have used Hornady SSt's and Lightfields in a rifled Mossberg 500 with good results. I now own an H+R USH 12 ga. thumb hole. It likes the Hornady SST's a lot. (about $10 around here). I have gotten 5 shot groups-all in the heart on a deer target at 100 yards 3 times-repeatability is important-your tc barrel should be able to match or better that.
I use a Nikon 3-9 with sst's for open field and longer range shots where it is safe. they do ricochet more than the other slugs. I always use QD rings so I switch to a Mueller 2-7 scope with red dot for woods hunting or hunting near buildings. I then switch to hand loaded Lyman 525 gr. sabot slugs. I've shot about 200 of them through this barrel and they will hit the inner kill area (lung heart) on a deer silhouette target all day. Got a small 6 point last Sat. night. Jellied the lungs and liver and exited the rear abdominal area.
My H+R also likes Lightfields but they seem scarce this year. They group about 2" higher than the Lyman's at 100 yards.
I shot about 100 Quikshoks and they group very good out to about 75-80 yards--good price$13 for 10.
http://www.polywad.com/quikshok.htmlI'm really fond of the Lyman handloads now, much cheaper and fun to reload. Terminal performance was similar to Lightfield. Accuracy is more than adequate at the distances in my hunting areas.
From what I read about the tc(I have 2 tc handguns 44 mag and 50 cal. ml and handload the 44)
you will have good results with either the fast sabots or the slower big guys-Lightfield, etc. It's a quality barrel.
Scope question-get a PRO HUNTER SHOTGUN 4X32MM PRO-DIAMOND RETICLE --$89 at
http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00204517793I've used these for slug and turkey and ml for years.
You'll find that you have a very good slug barrel and a lot of different options will work. As you said funds are tight-thats why I have moved to hand loads.
One thing to remember-it's
what is your gun's favorite load?. Every muzzleloader, handgun, slug gun because of a variety of factors will perform best with certain loads. Over time that barrel will let you know what shoots best in it. What I like may actually be a poor combination. I'm lucky my gun likes hand loads-like you said-funds are tight! good luck and keep us posted.
