What's everyones fav. slug?
« on: March 27, 2008, 02:31:17 AM »
Just got a great deal on a 24" rifled slug barrel for my encore. I haven't fallowed slug technology for some time now but getting back acquainted I used to use 3" rotweil brennekes in a smooth bore  and got three inch groups at 100 yards with them but that was a long time ago. I know they now make the I believe it's called the golden bullet a brenneke design made for rifled barrels. I also remember the brennekes leaving alot of lead in the barrel as well. I was just wondering what peoples opinion was on the slugs that are on the market. What are the best and what are the best value.  Also looking to put a scope on it but funds are tight right now don't know what to use. I've had good luck with the pro-staff scopes but it's bad to say but they are a bit out of range at the moment. Has anyone tried the cabelas pine ridge series?

My Moss 500 smooth, absolutely loves the Brennekes(10 deer,3 years)all on the ground in 10yds or less. My boys Moss 500 rifled 20 likes the Lite fields. My 20 Ultra slug likes the Rem copper solids.

My favorite slugs are the one's that shrivel up when you put salt around the foundation.

As far as shotguns, I've always had good luck with the Brennekes, but its been years since I had to use a shotgun for deer.

Hey simplicity, I have never used brennekes before, but I have used Remington's, Winchester, and Federals, also KO's.  Remington's are the best out of my Mossberg 535 which is a smooth bore gun, they put 2 inch patterns at 50 yards.  Also about good scopes, I have used the Bushnell shotgun scopes, they are cheap but work great for under 100.00 dollars as a regular price, you can buy them at Cabales.  If I were you I would try a sabots out of a slug barrel, I have heard of guys putting 6 inch patterns or better at 100 yards.

Hope this helps

I've been shooting 2 3/4 copper solids out of my 870 first brand I tried. They are staying inside a CD if I have a rest and I get the trigger to cooperate with my finger! For 100yds. I'm not gonna complain. My daughter is running federal Barnes expander and they are same pretty much .  My shotty is in 12 ga and has a 1.5 x 5 leupold, hers is 500 mossberg 20ga with irons.  As spendy as the sabot ammo is I just can't justify trying for better accuracy. No deer have been available for comment.

I shoot out of smooth barrels and like the older Remington Sluggers, the Brenneke KO, I have some Brenneke Black Magic that I am planning to take to the range to evaluate the performance.

Shot Winchester Platinum Supremes in a Browning BPS in 12 gauge for many years here hunting the thick stuff in Wisconsin. Have just recently switched to Hornady SST's and am really impressed with the groups and the consistency. Expensive? You bet. But you get what you pay for and I am not one to scrimp when it comes to ammo. BLH.

I have used Hornady SSt's and Lightfields in a rifled Mossberg 500 with good results. I now own an H+R USH 12 ga. thumb hole. It likes the Hornady SST's a lot. (about $10 around here). I have gotten 5 shot groups-all in the heart on a deer target at 100 yards 3 times-repeatability is important-your tc barrel should be able to match or better that.
I use a Nikon 3-9 with sst's for open field and longer range shots where it is safe. they do ricochet more than the other slugs. I always use QD rings so  I switch to a Mueller 2-7 scope with red dot for woods hunting or hunting near buildings. I then switch to hand loaded Lyman 525 gr. sabot slugs. I've shot about 200 of them through this barrel and they will hit the inner kill area (lung heart) on a deer silhouette target all day. Got a small 6 point last Sat. night. Jellied the lungs and liver and exited the rear abdominal area.

My H+R also likes Lightfields but they seem scarce this year. They group about 2" higher than the Lyman's at 100 yards.

I shot about 100 Quikshoks and they group very good out to about 75-80 yards--good price$13 for 10. http://www.polywad.com/quikshok.html

I'm really fond of the Lyman handloads now, much cheaper and fun to reload. Terminal performance was similar to Lightfield. Accuracy is more than adequate at the distances in my hunting areas.
From what I read about the tc(I have 2 tc handguns 44 mag and 50 cal. ml and handload the 44) you will have good results with either the fast sabots or the slower big guys-Lightfield, etc. It's a quality barrel.

Scope question-get a PRO HUNTER SHOTGUN 4X32MM PRO-DIAMOND RETICLE  --$89 at http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00204517793
I've used these for slug and turkey and ml for years.
You'll find that you have a very good slug barrel and a lot of different options will work. As you said funds are tight-thats why I have moved to hand loads.

One thing to remember-it's what is your gun's favorite load?. Every muzzleloader, handgun, slug gun because of a variety of factors will perform best with certain loads.  Over time that barrel will let you know what shoots best in it.  What I like may actually be a poor combination. I'm lucky my gun likes hand loads-like you said-funds are tight!  good luck and keep us posted.

I just recently bought a 12 gauge slug barrel for my Encore, I found that the Lightfield 2 3/4 inch slugs shot great in the gun. I put a 4 X Leupold rifle scope on it. It is my back up shotgun.

I've got a rifled slug barrel on my TCR (along with a turkey smooth bore barrel).  Back when I lived on the East coast I used sabot slugs (any brand) and later switched to Rem Copper Solids.

On 13 separate occasions I had a shoot off against another person with a scoped rifle.  My TCR had a Leupold 1.5 * 5 mounted on it.  In 12 of those 13 contests, I simply fired two shots off of sandbags.  When the slugs touched at 100 yards, the competitor threw in the towel.  In that one other contest, I shot a two inch group and lost.  However, I had some lose scope base screws that I later found.

Now to the real bragging part:  In 1999 the TCR developed some problems.  I sent it to T/C for warranty work.  They initially didn't want to work on it since that part of their factory burned down in 1997.  In the end, I got a hand made (one of one) replacement TCR sent back to me.  Looks real primative and doesn't have the normal factory markings (only a serial number), but it works just fine.  I take it to the range every other year or so and fire it a few times, just to say I shoot it.

It's too bad we don't have more of a variety of slugs here in Canada. We get all the typical Winchester, Federal & Remington styles as well as a Canadian made version called Challenger rifled slugs which work well in both smooth & rifled barrels. They look alot like these;

It's too bad that Lightfield or Hastings slugs were'nt offered here. Right now I'm getting my best groups using Winchester 1oz Foster slugs fired out of my Win 1200 deer barrel with Carlson's RCT @50yds.  :)

Federal Barnes Expander 1 oz. 2 3/4" shells out of my Mossberg 695 hold 1.5" group at 100 yards and harvested a ten pointer theis year at over 150 yards shattering the shoulder, passing through both lungs, and exited out of the deer. 1450fps and do not rock your head and shoulders off their pivot.

Hastings works best out of mine.  The best thing to do is to go out an buy as many different brands as you can afford and try them all.  Make sure you get them in a wide variety of speeds.  I think I tried 8 different types of slugs before settling on one.

Those challenger slugs look the same as the fiochis which also use the dangerous game slug.  Of all the less expensive slugs, the fiochis worked best out of mine.  I think they run around $8 for a box of 10.

As for low end scopes, stick with Bushnell.

In my 20 gauge Rem. 1100 smooth bore the standard Remington Sluggers are my favorite.  12 gauge 1187 Supermag w/ rifled barrel, the 3" Lightfield Hybred-Elite are my fav.

I would try to use a sabot slug in a rifled barrel so that you can cut down on the lead fouling and make cleaning easier on yourself. Just this year I switched to the Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs to use in my Remington 870 with a Hastings barrel. I was able to get them for $12 a box which was great because they are normally $15-$16. Very accurate and deadly, the buck I shot this year only went 5 yards. The Hornady SSTs worked well for me too but I switched because I hunt in some thick stuff and wanted a heavier slug.

My buddy shoots the Federal ballistic tipped Barnes expanders out of an H&R ultra slug hunter and has had good success with those. He shot an 8 point at just over 200 yards this year and it only went about 45 yards or so.

My brother just started using the new Remington Premier AccuTip Sabot Slugs this year and he also has good accuracy and they are absolutely devastating on deer. But I went the Texas route (El Paso) with those because they were $21 a box at the time, they are only $13 on Cabela's website right now.

Every slug is going to shoot different out of every barrel so finding what works for you may be somewhat costly at first.
I hope I was some help

12ga or 20 go? ss or blued? I have the 20ga and it like's ww platinum series. It puts 3 in 1 ragged hole at fifty. That is as far as I got with it. My son has one we bought here used.. He has never shot it yet. But the seller say's it will shoot 6" ballons at 175 yards all day long until his shoulder gets tired , with Hornaday sst slug's. I went to the range with 200 dollars worth of slugs one day with my USH and my Encore..came home mostly PO"D and ... I cant seem to get my slugger to shoot ...yet except for lightfields @100 yds...And I have a Marlin that it aint replacin...So I gusee what I am trying to say is this. It is the time of year that slug's are on clearance so stock up on a couple boxe's of what ever you can find ..and take a day (and a lead sled) to the range... Let us know how it turn's out. Drop
