Rem 710 good/bad/certainly ugly/or just so-so?
« on: September 05, 2006, 03:01:23 AM »
I have owned a couple of Rems in the past, a 600 and a 788. They were both good shooters and as always I wish I had never gotten rid of them.
I was in the gunshop a couple of weeks ago and saw a guy buying a Rem 710 in 243. The price was certainly attractive. The gun wasn't. However, I've been thinking of getting one in 243.  What are the thoughts about them? What kind of tweeking?
I'm posting here rather then the Rem. forum because I hope to get a wider variety of responses.
Thanks.

The early reports were that the guns had terrible triggers. If that's been resolved, it's probably a good gun. Otherwise, there are other bargain rifles out there. Savage, for example, has what I consider to be better package deals than most.

I dont like that the UGLY stock is also the trigger guard. Im not sure if you can replace the stock or if your stuck with it. If Im gonna spend any money at all I still wanna like what I have and to me it is just too ugly to own plus like above said you can get a Savage for not much more and it will be a quality gun. My vote is "no" on the 710. Just MO. There are too many other choices that are better. BUT I have never fired one OR handled one so realy for me its the trigger guard and looks.

Fortunately the trigger question is easy to resolve if they'll let you dry fire it. You'll know if it's OK.

Looks like I may just stay with Savage. They used to have really bad triggers, but these new accu triggers are very nice. The rifles are accurate as well.

No offense to anyone who may own one, but I personally would never even consider buying a Remington 710. In my opinion, it's the absolute worst rifle Remington has ever made. I'd MUCH rather have a Savage, Ruger or even a Mossberg bolt action instead of the Remington 710.

There are definitely much better designed rifles for the same price.

Go with Stevens 200 or Mossberg ATR, better guns for less money..............

I think the 710 is directed toward the "box a year, pull it out of the closet and go deer hunting and then put it back" market.
That said, I wouldn't wish a Savage on anyone.  Save a few more bucks and get a 700 CDL.

While I no longer own a Savage rifle, the one I had was an excellent shooter in spite of the matte finish, unpolished metal surfaces, birch stock and plastic trigger guard.  I would take a Savage or Stevens any day before a Rem 710 - or quite a few other rifles.  Their reputation for being good shooters is well deserved as many others have shared my experience.  For the shooter to whom cosmetics are less important than function, the Savage provides an excellent value.  Granted the CDL gets the nod in the looks department, but for hunting purposes the Remmy offers little advantage if any.

there are much better guns out there than the 710 and are also cheaper.

Mossberg ATR or any of the savage look WAYYYYY better, shoot better, and cost less.

710 is just so damn ugly

I really like the new Savage bolt guns. They are really excellent. The Accu-Trigger is awesome. If I were in the market for a new rifle, I'd be looking at the Savages.

looks are subjective, accuracy isnt(well not as much).

A few bad shooting 710s have gotten a lot of press, but there are a lot out there that are not only accurate enough for hunting, but some are sub MOA, yes you read that right.

Like beemanbeme said, its intended for those that shoot once a year. My cousin is that type and seeing as this is pretty much a Remmy family, he got one and with me shooting, its sub MOA @ 200 yards. Thats as good as some of my expensive dedicated long range tackdrivers.

Now...looks and feel. Feel is important and in this regard, I wouldnt exactly recommend one. Looks arent great either, but again, intended for someone whos going to hunt once a year and never see it again until the following year, so looks dont factor in to someone who would buy this.

They kick like Mules but that new R3 pad helps. And I doubt you could damage one if you tried, they seem to be pretty tough.

There are better choices out there, and even if a person isnt going to use it much, I say spend the extra $150.00 and get something a step up. But from the few Ive seen, the 710 is as capable of making something dead just as other rifles will.

Have a splendid day :)
