1971 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag, is barrel stainless?
« on: August 17, 2006, 06:59:49 AM »
I just bought a nice model 700 and with the recently posted dating formula I figure it was made in November 1971. I have heard the earlier 7Mag barrelswere made of stainless and am wondering if mine is.

Since nobody including myself seems to know why don't you call Remington and I would imagine they should be able to tell you.  Remington: 1-800-243-9700
Good Shooting,

I pulled the stock off to look at the bedding and found a spot where whatever they were using for blueing came off in a patch and the bright stainless shows thru. I thus believe it is stainless.

I'd tend to agree with you after reading that  ;D

FWIW, I bought a 700 ADL in 7mag back in 1967 or 1968 that was supposed to have a stainless barrel.  I don't remember if it was marked as such on the box or the barrel, but I was a bit of a doubter later on when I discovered some areas on the barrel that appeared to have rust, although the surface was still smooth.  A friend's dad had a BDL in 7mag that did the same thing.  Years later, if I remember correctly, I read that Remington had plated the stainless barrels with copper, and then iron, so they could be blued.  Seems that some of the iron must have come off and revealed the copper.  That ADL was a VERY accurate rifle that I used on groundhogs and deer in PA.  When I moved to FL, however, I guess the heat addled my brain and I sold it.

(Stainless Steel) is Stamped right under the Caliber Stamp on the Barrel. About 15 yrs. ago I got ambitous and bead blasted the Barrel with a Freinds Blaster. At the Time, Rem was doing this with the New Models. (Eliminated the polishing Step) and charged more Money for the "Non Glare". Any ways, put it in a Brown Prec. Glass Stock. This gun always shot well. At one Time, I shot a one hole 3 shot group @ 100yds. Had to have a Local Bench Rest Guy verify it. It was very hard to tell if it was one shot/two shots or three. The original Blueing was more like a Flat Black. It was not the same color as if it was a Moly Barrrel - Blued. You can see rust occassionally accumulate. Looks like dirty oil or a dust. I just wipe it off with some oil and Paper towel. This is just a slight oxidation. Just because it is Stainless Steel, does not mean its Rustless. Any ways - Took it to Argentina in 05, Killed the Biggest Stag down there for that Year. If I remember correctly, I traded a 700 ADL/25-06 with a 10xWeaver for it in 1973.The BDL @ that Time, I think ,went for $189.00. Been with Me ever since. Still as good or better as any made Today. Hope this Helps.

This barrel has been plated as a patch of it came off where the pressure point under the forearm wore it off. This is a finely accurate barrel though. I took it out yesterday and shot a box of Estate 160 grain Mag Tip ammo thru it and got 4 three shot groups measuring .750 or less. I rebedded the barreled action to the stock, "gluing" the barrel to it from just in front of the sling swivel stud to 4 inches behind it with black automotive silicon. This removes the flexing of the stock in this area and keeps the stock from pulling away from the barrel by the sling making for a much more solid feeling rifle. Seems to make rifles shoot very well also. The junction can easily be seperated by using a piece of fishing line to sort of saw thru it. That is if you need to seperate the barreled action from the stock.
