Which gives the best out of the box accuracy ?
« on: August 15, 2006, 08:30:47 AM »
Need to buy a .243 in a hurry. So which gives best out of box accuracy ? Browning A-bolt hunter, Remington 700 or Rugar 77.
I had a Rugar .243 once and it shot great then aftr a while it went south, I tried everything but it never shot good groups again. However I'm will to try again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and I like wood stocks.

Not on the list, but the Savage or Stevens is going to shoot the best, probably.  I like Remingtons myself.  The rugers are nice, too.  Not big on the shiny brownings...just my opinions

Hummmmmm. I think a Country Boy by any other name would be Hard Luck, right? I'm still going with the Savage.

I'd go with Reminton or Savage out of the box.  The Savage accutrigger does wonders for an already accurate rifle, in my opinion. and the price is right.

Tikka, Sako, and (hate to admit it......Savage).

My Remingtons are also very accurate as well.

Again, keep this is mind - you are asking us to generalize, and we are, but it's not accurate.  You can get a Tikka that will not shoot a given load as well as a Remington, Ruger, etc., and visa versa.

Make sure that you also consider quality, fit and finish, stock fit, etc.

If you like wood you owe it to yourself to go check a CZ out, But I warn you after handling one you'll have to own one.
I've never even heard of a cz not shooting great. Mine certianlly do

Ten years ago I would have said Remington then Browning. Now I would say its a coin toss between the two.

Remington would be my first buy.   then a Weatherby Vanguard.   then a Ruger.

i'd re-work the Rem' and Ruger triggers as per www.centerfirecentral.com   i've done three Rugers and a number of Rem's.   they are easy with the Rem's; but the simple metalwork on the Ruger requires that the angles of the trigger and sear be kept properly aligned, just as they came from the factory.

i re-worked the trigger on the Weatherby Vanguard i have in .270 Win, similar to the work done on the Ruger in principle.   careful filing and polishing with adjustment of the 'one' screw were very helpful.   it is a tackdriver....and it is not one of their 'new' Sub-MOA Vanguards. (Wal-Mart two years ago for $250 on clearance!)

the instructions on centerfirecentral were very clear and easilly followed, for me.

take care,

ss'

My Savage 11 is the most accurate. I have one in a 223 Rem and am contemplating a 7mm/08 ( for the accutrigger!).
I don't think the long actions (111,110,1140) have accutriggers yet. Worth checking, though.
BTW, the scope on my package rifle was a Simmons 3x9x40 8-Point. It is fish-eyed junk.

I agree with anweis again.... ;)

What about Weatherby? Lawdog used to be a staunch advocate of theirs. I'm sure he'd have something to say. BTW, I kind of miss the LARGE PRINT in RED I'm sorry he's no longer around. Any other Weatherby fans out there?

Regards

Remington.  No contest.  I do have to say, I can think of a whoooooole lot of other cartridges I would buy a rifle for before I'd buy a .243.

Flipped a coin and bought a Browning A-bolt hunter II. Been shooting all day with different factory loads and my hand loads. When I got to the Remingtons, I found the tack driver and was alble to hit 12 0z coke bottles consistantly at 250 yds. The scope I thought was broke wasn't (Simmons masterseries 3x10) I didn't even bother with the Leaupols and Nikon I brought to try. I was disappointed in the vel of the 100 grn bullets all, including my handloads averaged about 2880. I was hoping for 3000.  Think I will drop down to 85's which I used for years with good results on game. ;D
If I didn't tell you I think that voodo queen I jilted in 1965  cursed that Savage, every once in a while I get on a bad luck streak. I think she is still watching.

I flipp3d a coin and bought a Browning a-bolt hunter. After testing some different brands of ammo today. It became a real tack driver with the Remington 100 grn corlock. I was shooting 12 oz coke bottles with it at 250 yds. But was disappointed in the vel. only 2880. I was hoping for 300 with my handloads  but all loads from all mfg. went about 2880

Might bit a bit more pricey than the Savage, but my Kimber's are all one hole wonders.

USMC Snipers shoot 700 Remingtons.  Not much else to say really.  I love my .308.

the Marines M40 and the Armys M24 use Remington actions, but I believe some use modified barrels(Mike Rock barrels in some cases).

Not cheap but its the real deal...

http://www.snipercountrypx.com/c-835-m24.aspx

An affordable alternative(around $850.00) is the rare Remington SS 5R Milspec(My next baby). Its comes with the special barrel and is considered to be the most accurate "out of the box" rifle ever. They made a run of them in 2003/2004, and another this year.

Heres a review of the newer model if interested...
