I have two bdl's, neither have the detachable magazine. Both are excellent, very good shooters.

Although Remingtons are not as good as they used to be, they are still very good rifles.  However, I would, and do, buy a Tikka over any other rifle in  the $500 to $600 range.

indeed i have an old remington 700bdl 30-06 without the detachable mag and its just great, very accurate, and the adjustable trigger with creep and overtravel and lbs is awesome as well(dont think the new ones have that)
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

My model 700 BDL in 30/06 is a very accurate rifle. It doesn't have a detachable magazine but it sure can shoot. I have alot of Remingtons. They are a great rifle.

I don't believe the BDL is available with the detachable mag.  Mine, in 30-06 as a great rifle though.

I purchased a used Remington 30-06 bdl last year and it's a tack driver with the leupold 3x9-40 varixII topping it off.
I think the optics are just as important as the rifle.
If you look at ballistics the 7mag will outperform the 06.
Hope this helps.

So will an M-1 Abrams but that was not the question. ;D

Maybe it will but in out of the way places ammo can be hard to find and bullet selection is a bit thin. Does Barnes make a TSX for it yet? ;D

I own 5 Remington Model 700's. IMHO Remington quality has gone downhill, if I was looking for a M-700 I'd look around and pick up a good used one(s); say Pre-1995. They were definitely better then.
I bought a 2004 Model 700 "Classic" in 8x57 caliber. The bloody scope mounting holes on the top of the receiver are not aligned straigth! Believe it or not... fortunately I put Leopold rings on that and the rear windage adjustment feature allows the scope to sit straight in line with the receiver/barrel. And I know other guys that bought that same 2004 "Classic" and had the same problem.

The Remingtons I own were built in 1980; 1982; 1983; 1996 and 2004 and there's a definite difference in the triggers especially. The older guns had great triggers. One thing about mine, all of them except that 2004 8x57 are very accurate. I get sub 1" 5-shot groups with my .30-06, .270 and .300H&H. My .338 will do about 1.25" for 5-shots. The 8x57 needs a bed job.

So look around. Check the Remington serial number system and use it to find the year of manufacture. People are always selling off those older rifles thinking they need something "new and improved". Lots of good old rifles out there for sale:)

Or go out and buy a Tikka. My buddy bought one recently and says it is the best out of box rifle he has ever purchased[/i], and that's saying a lot since he has owns 50+ rifles and has sold that many again.
