Fed up with Remington 700 trigger
« on: May 26, 2006, 06:51:10 AM »
The cheapo-creepo trigger on my Remington 700 needs adjustment to remove creep. Are there simple instructions that the user can follow to adjust this, or are their warnings that only a gunsmith should attempt an adjustment based on real complexity (and not just liability concerns?)

Thanks.

try www.centerfirecentral.com.   look at their 'gunsmithing' items.

i've done a few that have worked out very well.    but your results may vary.   you need a trigger pull-weight gauge and you need to be realistic about what kind of adjustment is safe with a factory-installed trigger.   we've had good luck going as low as 40 ounces on the pull weight.   even then, the pull-weight is not always consistent at 40 ounces when a gauge is used.   the system seems to be more consistent at somewhat heavier pull-weight settings.

the sear engagement adjustment is potentially dangerous......and is something you will have to work on while keeping the rifle safe for all potential uses!

i think Remington makes a great trigger and that its adjustability is one of the underrated features of the Model 700.   but......you would have to replace a spring on the pull weight adjustor to reliably go lower than 40 ounces from what i can see.    to go that low on a hunting rifle is irresponsible, however.   there are too many distractions and too many potential slips and falls in the field to have a trigger that is adjusted too low.......in my opinion.

be patient,

Thank you. My needs seem  to be a little simpler. The weight is fine. The problem is creep when I take up the trigger. Sometimes it creeps, other times it's fine. I just want to get rid of that creep.

Here is what I used as a guide when I adjusted the trigger in my 700P. It worked out great. You will definately need to get or borrow a pull gauge to test it out though.

I have set a Model 700 trigger, on a 1996 .270 Sendero that had a terrible trigger when I bougth it. I got the instructions of the internet; an article called "Remington Crisp" . I found it easy to do and ended up with a trigger ~2.5 lbs.

After setting the trigger I then tried to make the trigger fire by bouncing the rifle on the recoil pad and slamming the bolt shut hard and I could not make it fire "accidentally" so the sear is obviously very good.

When I was happy with the trigger adjustment, I used a small drop of nail polish on the screws to prevent them from moving, so hopefully my adjustments last, and so far I have had no problem.
