Best Factory Trigger
« on: May 14, 2006, 05:07:33 AM »
I own several brands of rifles, from Remington, to Tikka, to Winchester, to Sako, to Browning, to, etc.

My favorite factory trigger is, without question, the Sako/Trikka trigger.  Out of the box, it is just amazing.  Single set, fully adjustable from 2lbs to about 4lbs, and super crisp with no creep.  The only other trigger that is better, albeit barely, is the Jewell trigger - which runs well over $200 plus installation.  With a Sako/Tikka rifle, consider the selling price to be $200 less because you are getting $200+ worth of a fine trigger.

Remington triggers CAN be fine (although still not anywhere as good as a Tiika/Sako, ONLY if you do a good trigger job, and even then it's not as great as a Tikka/Sako.  Out of the box, you need Tractor trailer to pull the trigger (same with Winchester).

The worst factory triggers are probably the Ruger and Savage pre-accutrigger.

Another very good trigger is the Kimber, but it is a semi-production rifle, as well as the Weatherby Mark V.

CZ and Howa as also very good, but not the best, IMHO.

It has been a very long time since I have had a poll, and I am very interested in your input because I would like to use it and forward the results to Remington.

My first instinct was to reply: "Weatherby Mark V", but I see you've listed that as a semi-production rifle.  My only other experience is with Remington, Savage & Ruger.  I have both pre-accutrigger and an accu-trigger Savage.  I have to go with the accu-trigger.  Don't have a Tikka or Sako.  Maybe they'll start offering the T3 in left-hand sometime soon.

CZ's single set trigger makes all other triggers obsolete. You have a fairly normal trigger for hunting and snap shooting situations. But when you really need to dial in on a target or prey just click it forward and you have a 1# trigger that breaks like an icesicle.

Of the rifles I own, the Remington.  But I only own Ruger, Remington and Browning centerfire rifles.

The factory trigger, however, is not very important to me - it is generally easy to fix or replace relatively inexpensively.  The other features of the rifle concern me much more - construction, fit and finish, scope mounting, CRF or push feed, etc.  Not to mention the reputation of the company that built the rifle and how they stand (or don't) behind their products.

I've owned Remingtons, Winchesters, Weatherby Vanguard, Marlin, Thompson, Savage (pre accu), Ruger and a Tikkas. The Tikkas are THE BEST IMHO. The worst were the Ruger, Thompson, and Savage. The Win, Weath and Rem were okay, just not as clean and crisp.

Just sold my other rifles and I'm replacing with Tikkas.

I have to agree 100%. I own, CZ, Browning, Tikka, and Sako, I have also owned a lot of other brands and the CZ is one of the best I have found.  :D

The Savage Accu-trigger is a factory trigger that I have come to love.  It made a believer out me of me after years of dismissing savage bolt guns.  They shoot, too!

Redhawk,

You really feel that the CZ trigger is better than the Sako/Tikka?  Wow.

Is the trigger on the 452 American (I have one in 17HMR) identical to the trigger on CZ's Centerfire BOA rifle models?  If yes, then I still believe that, while the CZ trigger is very good, the Sako/Tikka trigger is better.

The trigger on a CZ452 is a normal single stage trigger, The new 453 and all of the centerfire CZ's use a completely diffrent single SET trigger. The diffrence between the two is night and day.

 BTW I own both. :D

Thanks.  Now you've guys got me curious about that CZ trigger.

Still, it is very hard for any trigger to beat a Sako/Tikka.  So far Remington only has 1 vote, and Winchester has none.

Remington now has two now that I've opened this thread. The standard R700 trigger is as adjustable and as easily adjustable as any of them. But the new XR-100 uses the 40X trigger and there is none better out there. Right out of the box you will not want to mess with it I promise but it too is adjustable and from the outside if you just gotta tinker.

I hate and despise set triggers whether single or double. Won't own a gun with one.

over the years I have owned & shot 4 sako rifles..Bar none best factory trigger out there..fit & finnish is just great..I really like the older Sako rifles & prefer them to most any modern bolt gun...Only draw back is they are what they are..& are expensive...Last 4 rifles I bought were one winchester m 70 Stealth, 3 beater stevens & savage to build into something else..I really like to be able to change things on my rifles & Savage is the tool shed gunsmiths rifle..It needs some of that tinkering the old triggers are pretty bad..[they can be adjusted but] The barrels seem decent but I never find them in calibers or weights I want ...SOOO change that & hell while I'm at it I might as well get a stock I like under it...usually I can do the whole rig five to under 700 hundred complete..Not cheap but I got what I wanted [trigger, stock, caliber & weight] with a really nice barrel...for under half the price of any other rifle with a custom barrel & no wait time for the barrel maker to install it...mike in ct...PS ADD COOPER RIFLES TO YOUR POLL...they are very nice & fair price for what you are getting..made in USA too!!!

Love my Sako 75 trigger......I can adjust to under 2lb,
and crisp as. Consistent, consistent, consistent, also.

I vote for Sako.

Owned an older Sako in .222 and that was great also.

Owned CZ (Brno), but not as good as Sako.

My  Weatherby Vanguard Varmint 'Red Mist' is acceptable,
but not in the same league as Sako, also needs to be adjustable to around the 2lb mark, not the minimum  3 1/4lb as at present.

Triggers on my .222 Anschutz 1742 and Anschutz 1712 rimfire are brilliant, also.

cheers,

Well, so far it seems that Sako/Tikka are holding a sizeable lead in first, although, interestingly enought, Savage is in second, and Remington in third.

Personally, I just can't get passed that "trigger within a trigger" Savage trigger concept.

Just out of curiosity, for those of you who voted for Savage, do you also own (or ever used) a Sako/Tikka trigger?

As a custom gunsmith I will say from my experiance that out of the box the CZ single set trigger is adjusted rather poorly.   However when adjusted it is on a par with the Kiplinger single set trigger which is fantastic!    The trigger on the CZ rifles is one of the selling points of their rifles and I know of no other factory trigger on a par with the CZ single set trigger.

I have never heard of a Kiplinger trigger.  How do you compare it to a Jewell?

I voted for the SAKO trigger, I have a couple SAKO rifles.  I also have Browning, Winchester, and Savage rifles.  I voted for the SAKO for its ease of adjustment and the result it produces.  In my opinion, the Winchester is next as the adjustment is only slightly more complicated but produces a result almost as good as the SAKO.  Next is the Savage, which is the easiest of all to adjust (within its range).......but doesn't produce as a refined result as a well adjusted SAKO or Winchester trigger.  Browning is last in my rack for 2 reasons:
1.  They're pretty close to exactly the way I like a trigger
2.  Adjustment is more difficult than the other 2

I have both CZ and Tikka's.  Both are great triggers(for factory rifles) but I would have to give the nod to CZ.  Being able to adjust the regular function as well as the set trigger weight is a big advantage.  I use both for high power silohuette shooting and being able to have both release at about the same weight is helpful.  Not having to replace or work on a trigger is a treat.

I voted for the Sako. I've owned several Sakos and I'm VERY pleased with their trigger! They are awesome.

I must admit that I'm very pleased with Savage's Accutrigger as well.

Remington factory triggers scary me to death. They DO have safety issues that can't be ignored (far too many documented accidental discharges). Therefore, on Remingtons I remove the factory trigger and replace it with either a Timney or Rifle Basix.

I voted for the Sako trigger also, I recently got my first Sako this year, and I have to say it not only has a nice trigger, but it is the nicest gun I have ever owned, it was well worth the wait.

"Best", by itself, is a subjective term that can be defined somewhat  differently by everyone.  All things considered, I like the Savage "the best".  I can't help but mention that I am sometimes amazed at the quality of trigger pulls that I have on some of my NEF/H&R frames as well.  I have a .17HMR NEF Sportster that I paid $119 for and the accuracy and trigger quality is awesome.  It deserves an "Honorable Mention"! :-)

I have owned a Sako75 & a Tikka T3.I will say they are IMO the best I've used in a basic factory setup.
At the moment I own a Sako L579,trigger is crisp but not near the 75's & T3's.

I have had Rem, Weatherby, Browning, Thompson and Ruger.  None of them come close to Sako.  Had 2 Weatherby triggers worked on . . . not close.  Browning with a different spring was real close, maybe even equal (but it took a spring to get there) and the rest were poor at best. I should qualify here though that I like my triggers closer to 2#s than 3#s.  Don't even want to shoot one over 3#s. But that is just my preference of course.

The Sako rifles had to be adjusted, with an allen wrench, but they tell you how and it takes about 2 minutes max.  No extra stoning, changing out springs etc....  Sako triggers ROCK.
