Just wanted to know what everyone's "nightmare" round is, you know what Im talking about, the one round that you shot and thought it generated THE most and worst recoil you have ever experienced....

Mine was 30-378 weatherby, I would never shoot that thing again

I've shot a lot of rifles but believe it or not the worst was my 500 S&W mag Handi-rifle with the hollow plastic survivor stock.

A .416 Rigby, Mauser 98.  My dad had a war Buddy who was going thru a divorce and he stored a bunch of stuff at our house.  This gun was one of the items.  He said have fun with it, so...

If we are talking about rifles, then I'd say my .375H&H Mag with 300 grain bullets.  People say that the .375H&H has more of a push than a punch.  Well, I don't know about that.  Let's just say it has both! :)

If it's a shotgun, then I'd probably say my Browning pump in 10 gauge with 3 1/2" lead shot.  Man that gun can give you a wallop!

As for pistols, without a doubt it has to be my Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casaul with a 6 1/2" barrel and no scope.  That thing is just painful to shoot after a few rounds.

Mossberg 835 with 3 1/2 inch buck shot. Had to take a step backwards after the shot.

Once upon a time when I was young and dumb, there were two ducks flying fairly close together and I got the bright idea to open up with both barrels of my side-by-side twelve with 00 buck shot. Just as my mind told me that was a stupid thought my fingers refused to listen and I ended up on my butt... all 6'2", 185 lbs. of me. Not the brightest thing I have ever done. Other than that, I would have to say my brother's 300 Wby Mag. It's not too bad from a standing position, but put that thing on a bench and it'll knock your fillings loose!!!

A 4 Bore single shot side hammer rifle. It belonged to the past secretary of the Single Shot Rifle Assn. 1/4 pound bullet, and what seemd like a lot of black powder. This also falls into the young and dumb catigory. Memorible to say the least.

Not that recoil is than bad but the most I have shot for recoil is my 375 RUM.. Soon I will compare to my 458 Win mag but i dubt the 458 will recoil more since it is a weaker load pushing a bigger amount of lead.

3.5" turkey load in a Mossberg.  Fed. two & a quarter oz. of shot.  I was leaning back against a rough barked black oak and the turkey kept circling to my right.  I was wearing a camo T shirt and vest but the vest scooted around and nothing but the Tshirt was between me and the tree.  When I set the cannon off, I lost some hide on the tree.  Another time I had one come in behind me and I put the butt in the crook of my elbow to shoot him.  OUCH!  These weren't bang flops they were bang-thuds. The gun really kills on one end but only maims on the other.  I can stand it two or three times a year but it sure does physically hurt when you miss.

I once had a light weight .300 Win. Mag. that kicked the snot outta me when I fired it. I shot less than two boxes of ammo thru it before trading it off for a .270 Win. just like it. I fired a .458 Win. that kicked less or so it seemed but then I only shot it standing not from a bench.

I shot some Buffalo Bore .45-70 loads thru a rather light Marlin Cowboy with the little thin butt and no recoil pad. That was quite painful and six rounds was quite enough for me. I once had an elcheapo replica of a Sharps with a curved metal butt plate and tried some hotter than I should have loads in it. Ten of them left my shoulder bruised and colored for two weeks.

But likely the worse was a TC Renegade .54 using the heaviest Buffalo Bullet made for it over 120 grains equivalent of Pyrodex. That just plain hurt. It was like getting hit by a baseball bat each time it went off. I didn't do that many times either.

I shot a 10 gauge 3 1/2 in rifled slug one time that kicked the crap out of me.  Not only that but the Slug sounded like a Mortar going down range and hit like one too.  You could actually hear it spinning in flight.

I was in a gun shop one day and they had an 8 Gauge Goose Gun with a 48 in barrel on the used rack.  I thought about it.  But naaaaaaaaaaaaah.

At least I can say I held it.

Worst rifle, a Tikka T3 light in 338 Win Mag.  We bought a past Recoil pad for it, it really saves the shoulder, butI still think that gun gave me a concussion or whiplash.  It hurt my neck up to the top of my head.

My kinda light Mossberg 500 with 3" slugs sucks too.  Turkey loads = ouch.

I would have to say that my mossberg 835 with some 3.5 turkey loads,  made me take a step back,  I just never could get used to that gun.  I cant remember if I have tried the turkey loads in my 870 yet, I will have to take them and some 3.5" buckshot that I have had sitting around for over a year and see how it shoots.

Most severe recoil I ever experienced was a .458 Winchester Magnum, full length in a custom XP-100 handgun.  It wasn't too bad with the light 350 gr cast bullets, but with the 500 gr FMJ load, it torqued your elbow into the ground and went way past vertical.  Shooting creedmore, resting it on calf and thigh.  I tried two of the "light" cast loads.  One of the full house 500 gr loads was enough for me.  I don't think anyone would want to try to shoot it offhand, at least not without a helmet!

2ndtimer,

I know what you mean.  I have a Thompson Contender .35 Rem with a 14 in. Hunter Barrel.  The first time I shot it, it made my hand bleed.  So I bought a Gel Shooting glove.  Recoil on this Pistol sends it way past vertical.  Shooting this thing without proper hearing protection could make you deaf for over 20 minutes, which does not make it good for hunting.  Not only that, but I think if I hung a hotdog from a string out just past the muzzle, the hotdog would have been cooked after just one round.

Anyone who thinks that a .44 Magnum is the most powerful handgun in the world has probably never had a .35 Rem Contender do any snorting in their hand(s).

I would have to say my double barrel 12 ga shotgun with both barrels going off at the same time high brass shells. It caught me by surprize.

I can shoot my 10 ga or my 416 Rem or my 338 RUM no problem, but that double barrel got me. :D

Wow JVS I consider a .35 Rem. Contender to be mild in recoil. Now rechamber it to a .358 JDJ and push those 225 Noslers to 2300 fps and that's just plain wicked.

I have that Contender for over 20 years.  I think I MIGHT have 10 rounds through it in that time.  For me, 10 is enough.

Honestly, I don't know why I still have it.

When I was a teenager, I accidently fired both barrels at once from a 12 ga at a rabbit. I shoot left handed and wanted to shoot the right  (open choke) barrel first and as the rabbit was moving my right to left, as I swung I hit both triggers at once.  It set me back a bit and I was wondering why it kicked so much until I opened it up and saw two rounds fired.  Was shooting low brass loads I think.
And no, I didn't even get the darn rabbit!!    :-D

Worst recoil?

Although I have fired a .470 Nitro double gun, and own a .458 Win., the most memorable recoil I recall was from a .378 Weatherby without a brake on it.  Very sharp, very fast, bad stock design, and definitely and "ouch".

I'll second the .378 Weatherby, and at the time I was shooting my .458 a lot. Not only did the .378 stomp me and black my shoulder and cheek, but the scope hit me and cut a calf's a$$ in my forehead.
