Worst recoil I felt was when I was on a shotgun course at work. Around shot 1000 or so it was really starting to take its toll.(all slug and not reduced recoil) By the end of day 2 and shot 1374 I couldn't feel it anymore so it didn't really matter. Couldn't lift my arm for a few days after that one.

My h&r utra 12 ga slug gun  W/ the winchester 400gr sabot 1800fps. I was very suprised by this. There was so much pressure the brass base flowed into the ejector slot- Kevin

oh it would have to be my mossberge 835 turkey gun with 3 1/2 turkey loads. Kicks worse than my 300 win mag.

My .458 lott is the biggest I've fired.  I've fired two 3" out of my stoeger, but they didnt compare.  An older family friend saw me fire it, and said never, cause it might rip his shoulder off!

45-70 loaded hot out of a light Marlin 1895 with no recoil pad - It was quite painful.  So painful that I I pulled the bullets and reduced the charge 10 grains.   That night I took my shirt off and my shoulder was black and blue.

The absolute "WORST" recoiling gun I have ever shot was my wife's TC Encore 209X50 Muzzle Loader, loaded with 2 Pyrodex pellets, TC Magnum sabot and  a 240 XTP, shot from the bench!  OH Yeah, the TC Rugged Rod was still in the barrel!  This is the only one that has made marks on this ole dudes body!  It's a Scope vs Eye Brow thing!

The ramrod went about 30 yards and burried itself in the lawn and when I retrieved it, the XTP was still stuck on the end of the rod and the rod was bent into a... you guessed it, letter C!
It's hanging in Joe Russell's Hill Top Hunting gun shop, as a reminder to others!

Other than this one the worst was only a 458 Win Mag!
They'll take the hat off your head and set it on top of the scope!

I shoot a 375 H&H that does not kick too bad,;but the worst I think I have shot was my new benelli nova sluggun with 3.5 Inch bb load.Man,I let people shoot that load just to see the looks on their faces.Makes a 3" load out of a defender seem tame!

My worse was a deer camp shotgun, you know the one, nobody owns it, nobody can remeber who left it, just been there by the door for 3 decades.
Someone over the years had cut the old long-tom's barrel down to the legal limit and put on a slide-on shell holder.   The elastic black kind you can buy a walmart for $ 5-10.
So onenight the dog are raising heck, I be one of only 2 sober people in camp at 11:30 pm pick up the shotgun and flashlight to see what  was the matter. Sure enough a brazen coon was going through the dogs feed barrel. Well I will fix his butt........

Pull out a shell (8 birdshot..sure) loaded up, cocked the hammer.........

Next thing you know I am seeing stars flat on my butt  in the mudd and the hound are luaghing thier tail off at me. The old coon was long gone maybe to Mobile..
     what happened?
The hammer did not lock back and when I left my thumb off of it the old gun went off, but it was not a load of birdshot nooooo  it was a good old fashion federal lead 12 gauge slug.
ouch ouch ouch

I had an old Savage pump that I bought for duck and goose huntin'. It's only got a 3" chamber, but when I sat down, with my back against a tree and touched off a 1 7/8 oz turkey load, I was convinced a turkey'd be capable of doin' me less damage. I'm now huntin' gobblers with a .56 Renegade smoothbarrel.

My Handi 45-70 until I put the Choate stock on it. My Encore 460 S&W pistol is a real handful! And a 3 1/2" 12 gauge turkey load in my 870 Express will wake you up!

Well, a 180 grainer from my 300 WSM woke me up real fast.

But then, having just purchased a Marlin 45-70, I'm sure that will take top honors (haven't shot it yet - Marlin is still fixing it).

Although.....most recoil calculators put the 300 WSM about 8 recoil-pounds heavier than a 350 grain bullet from the 45-70.

What say ye?

My worst would be either be a 45-70 Marlin, with the cresent steel buttplate, loaded just about to the max from the bench or my Nova with 3.5 turkey loads, before I got smart and added that slip on butt pad.

The worst one for me was a friends Contender pistol in 45-70 with some very stiff loaded 405 gr bullets, one shot was all it took.
Almost as bad was another friends Remmy Mdl. 7 in 308 with some heavy loaded 180 gr. bullets. The same friend also has a 98 Mauser in 35 Whelen Imp. and the 250 gr. bullets aren't too much fun either.

The worst kicking weapon I've owned, was a TC with a 8" barrel with screw-in choke that fired 44mag or 44mag shot shell or if you wanted I think  you could run 410 thru it, never did but the 44 mag would turn your hand black and blue after 2 or 3 rounds, and I'm a big fellow, 6'3" and 300+#'s.

After a weekend of 3"mag steel #4's duck hunting I'd get a little sore.

When my father was just 12yrs old he took his grandfathers sidexside down to the sloughs for opening morning duck hunting (rode his bike).  He pulled the gun up to fire at a flock of ducks and pulled one of the triggers, both barrels went off.  He picked himself up out of the mud, picked up the gun, picked up 9 ducks and rode his bike home, with tears in his eyes...... :(

I'm not normally that sensitive to recoil, but I have no desire to fire another .460 Weatherby.

The worst recoil That I have had to endure was from a 300 Weatherby ultra light-weight rifle that a friend talked me into shooting. There is no reason for a 6.5 pound rifle to shoot a 200 grain bullet at 2900 FPS! Ok - it may have some reason to exist but I have no reason to ever pull the trigger on one EVER AGAIN!

The next on the list was a 45-70 lever action Winchester. It was very nice to look at and didn't look evil at all but that lever action killed at both ends - it needs to have some serious weight added or a nice thick, soft recoil pad. The metal butt plate, sharp recoil of that 45 caliber bullet was way too much for my shoulder. I had the bruises the next day to prove it.

When I was 15 my buddy and I were duck hunting.  We'd shot a green wing teal that dropped about 50 yards out in the reservoir we were hunting.  we sat on the shore and waited for the almost non existent breeze to blow it into shore since we didn't have a dog.  I was sitting against a wooden fence post and picked up my buddies twelve guage.  for some reason I shouldered it and sigted in on the duck.  I also was stupid enough to belive in the safety and pulled the trigger.  Since my shoulder was against a post in couldn't recoil and it dang near broke my shoulder and made it blue on both sides.

Stupid is as stupid does,

A 7 pound lightweight .340 Weatherby Magnum with no brake. The first shot put the scope into my shooting glasses, which embedded into my face..........the barrel went nearly 90 deg into the air, my face went numb, nose bled, that was enough.  Brake went on it which did tame it to like .30-06 with a stiff load. Sold it later.  Got talked into building this monster by a well known smith who claimed his stock would handle all the recoil and make it tolerable.......yea, right.

Never again........

I have shot 7m Roy, and 300 Roy without any problem.  But I HAD a Winchester model 1300 black shadow turkey shotgun that when loaded with magnums just plain hurt me, and that was standing up not sitting.  4 shots and I sold it.  What a misery to shoot.

Worst kick from a rifle was a straight stocked 30-06.. beat me to a pulp.  And cause it was just an -06, I kept trying to shoot it, cause surely it was a freak occurance.. after several different boxes of ammo, even a light handload, it was time to say "Hasta La Vista, Baby.." and off it went.

I have shot up to a .460 Wby, as I used to sight in rifles for a gun shop, and off the bench, anything above .400 is thumping, violent but not brutal.  I have never found shotgun recoil, even with 10 guages, to be particularly problematic.. except for that one shot I took at a goose with my shoulder buried in the terrace.  That hurt a bit..

Adios,
