Savage mark 2 synthetic stock in .22 LR
« on: February 17, 2006, 08:24:57 AM »
Who owns one and what's your opinion on them?  Are they good shooters worth owning?  Any known issues that may cause them to have a bad rep?  I checked out rimfire central.com and they had a lot of specific info on accurizing and such; not much I could find on some of the general questions about the older ones.

I'm looking at one at a gun store that has the front and rear sites filed off (to make room for an inexpensive Simmons scope)... will having them gone have any affect on its overall accuracy?

What else should I know and consider before making my decision to buy?

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks-- Chief

I have had a Savage Mark II 22LR bolt action for about 2 years now. I got mine at Wally World with a cheap package BSA scope for $100. I trashed the scope and ended up putting a Tasco World Class 3-9x40 Mil-Dot on it, removed the rear sites, and drilled the stock and put a stud for a Bi-Pod for it. I also shaved the barrel channel to open up the room between the stock and barrel, I like it very floated
It really has been a great little rifle, and I have taken lots of Rabbits, Groundhogs, and Squirrels with it. I've put well over 4000rds through it, and it's still a good shooter. Not quite as accurate as it was, but thats a lot of rounds for any barrel to take. I still shoot it regularly.
The older models are now labeled under the Stevens name here:

I personally would go with the Savage model, seeing that almost all new rimfire models have the AccuTrigger:

For $100 I say go for it. I know I have got well enough use out of mine, and there's still a lot left to be had 8)

I have had one for quite a few years now.  I actually have one from when they were still Lakefield Arms.  Savage bought them a while back.  It was my first rifle when I was 10.  I have used it since and I am 21.  It has worked flawlessly.  I definately recommend it.
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."
