7 mm or 300 win.

I want to know if a 300 win. kicks alot more than a 7 mm Rem. I am going to buy one or the other for deer. I have shot deer with a 7 mm mag before but never a 300.  Thanks for your time.   Sean

Cobra7, go to          www.chuckhawks.com
and search for recoil table. It's going to be about 25-30% more, 26lbs vs 19lbs. but the good news is the recoil velocity appears to be similar.  Hope this helps.  KD

Or you could go with a 280Rem and get near the velocity of the 7Mag with even less recoil.

I shoot a 300 Win Mag. I don't think the recoil is bad at all. The 7mm Mag and the 300 Win Mag are close, but with the heavier bullets in the 300 win mag you will get more recoil. My preference is the 300 Win Mag over the 7MM Mag.  :D

Sean.

Welcome to Graybeard. As far as which one is the best for deer hunting you will get all kinds of come backs and the answer lies some where in your own mind. One of the posters mentioned the 280 Rem. which is about as good as it gets. In fact I would recomend it over both calibers you asked about. The 280 rem. will do anything you need to do in the lower United States for a lot less money. Try to get away from the Magnum craze Its nothing but a way to spend your money, Dead is Dead and the 280 will get it done. As A retired guide i can tell you a guide will say the same thing, Good luck Sir  :D ..............Joe.........

I've got to agree with OSO45.70 on this one..........I had a Winchester 70 in 7mm Remington Magnum several years ago......I don't know what is was about the gun, but the recoil on it was terrible.  It was ok for a few rounds, but not the kind of gun I wanted to sit down at the bench and run a lot of rounds through.  I kept if a few years...didn't shoot it much because of the recoil and finally traded it off at a loss.........

I bought the gun while I was young and in the army stationed in El Paso TX and was going to use it for mule deer out west where longer range shots are the norm.........Here in the east, long range shots at deer are the exception, not the norm and where I deer hunt I want something light and quick........anyway, I got orders for overseas shorty after purchasing the rifle and never did get to hunt mule deer out west with it........then there is a slight edge to the magnum......

A .280, or a 30.06 will do anything a 7mm Mag or 300 mag will do........except at extreme ranges.......

If you need the power then I'd go up in caliber, but for deer hunting either magnum us far more gun than necessary......except maybe at extreme ranges........but give the choice, here in E Tennessee, I probably take the 7mm Mag.......and shoot 139 or 140 grain bullets........JMHO

Cobra7,
I have both and shoot them quite frequently. Both are Remmy 700's, and both have good recoil pads and weigh about the same. To ME they seem to kick the same. If I were to chose one or the other I would probably go with the 300 Winchester, but thats just me. The others are right in that you don't NEED either or for deer but heck if you WANT it get. I've never killed a deer with either or, but have shot 2 bucks with the 300 WSM, another great round (in my opinion).

Either caliber will do just fine by you.

Honestly, in ranges from 50 - 200 yards, You can use ANYTHING from 270, 30-06, 308, 280, 7mm mag, 300 win mag (any of these will give you almost same performance)

Now if your talkin above 300+ yards (like 300-400) thats when the 7mm and 300 win mag kicks some benefits over the others.

However, I have been doing ALOT of research on fast moving small caliber (like 30 caliber) bullets, they tend to do alot of "bullet failurs" at extermly short ranges.  Heard many stories of 300 win mag bullets simply bouncing off The forheads of big 1000 pound brown bears.  and things like that scare me from using them in dangerous game hunting.

If you want a caliber that will handle anything from short range to long range, and is also a "boomer"... get the 338 win magnum, the price of ammo isn't that much more than the 300 win magnum ammo, of course the recoil on the 338 (esspecially on a light rifle) is just sick, I hate shooting 338 win magnums

The recoil on my 7mm Rem Mag or my 300 Win Mag isn't that bad. What you have to do is hold the rifle tight into your shoulder aim and fire. That way it doesn't hurt. :D
