Honestly, in ranges from 50 - 200 yards, You can use ANYTHING from 270, 30-06, 308, 280, 7mm mag, 300 win mag (any of these will give you almost same performance)
Now if your talkin above 300+ yards (like 300-400) thats when the 7mm and 300 win mag kicks some benefits over the others.
However, I have been doing ALOT of research on fast moving small caliber (like 30 caliber) bullets, they tend to do alot of "bullet failurs" at extermly short ranges. Heard many stories of 300 win mag bullets simply bouncing off The forheads of big 1000 pound brown bears. and things like that scare me from using them in dangerous game hunting.
If you want a caliber that will handle anything from short range to long range, and is also a "boomer"... get the 338 win magnum, the price of ammo isn't that much more than the 300 win magnum ammo, of course the recoil on the 338 (esspecially on a light rifle) is just sick, I hate shooting 338 win magnums
