Remington Fights to Keep Steam at Ilion NY Plant
« on: September 20, 2005, 03:57:17 AM »
Seems that the supplier of Steam to Remington's Ilion NY plant has decided that it was not profitable to work with Remington. The supplier was attempting to stop supplying steam to Remington and now they are going to court. Without steam the plant may close and leave 1000 workers out of a job. Here's the article:

Remington May Be Forced to Close the Ilion

Being that Remington manufactures about 90% of their firearms at their Ilona, NY plant, they can't afford to close it down any time soon or their going to be out of the firearm business. I don't know anymore about this then what the article you provided said. One thing I do know is that its the "corporate way" now a days for large companies to "strong arm" their venders and suppliers into lowering their prices. A lot of large companies are also outsourcing a lot of their operations to smaller companies to lower their operating costs. Sometimes this makes sense and sometimes this doesn't.

I work in the auto industry and this is were it started. GM, Ford and Daimlerchrysler have put many venders out of business by doing this. Sometimes the little guy has no choice but to close the doors and tell the customer they have to go elsewhere. I can't tell you how many different venders we have gone through in the last 5 or 6 years because of this. We have two main power sources at our plant. Niagra Mohawk guarantees that we never lose power or they have to pay us for any loses we have because of it. I've worked there for 8 years and we haven't lost power on a plant wide basis yet. In 1998 during the labor day storm when most of Central New York (including everyone around the plant for miles) was without power, the plant wasn't. Remington should take over the steam plant and live happily ever after! Just my opinion!

Not a bad idea...I don't know how much Remington wants to get into the steam business though.  I thought that just Remington shotguns were manufactured at the Ilion plant?  I could be mistaken as I don't know that much about their manufacturing practicess...

I'm sure they don't, but they might not have a choice if they want to make guns in their Ilion plant. Truth be told they probably would love to move the rest of their operations down south and here is a good excuse!

I thought that too. Last year I bought a 23" cantilever barrel for my 870 12 ga. I was having trouble getting it to group. It was shooting 12" groups at 50 yards. I live about an hour from Ilion so I took the barrel back and they gave me a new one. I still had the same problem so they wanted the whole shotgun. I was dealing with the same guy every time and we started talking. I ask what they made in the Ilion plant and he said just about everything except for a few rimfire rifles and their over and under shotguns which Remington doesn't even make anyways. Their centerfire rifles and their shotguns are all made at the Ilion plant, as well as their custom shop. Here is a list of their plants!

I must also say that the problem I had with my 870 was 100% my fault and Remington still fixed it and didn't charge me at all!
