Premium vs. Traditional Bullets?

I got caught up in a sub-plot with my earlier post and didn't really key in on the original topic.

The Hornady Interlock has given me premium performance out of a 243.  I have a box of the Interlock 165's that I bought for my 30-06.  I have not come up with a good accuracy load for it though.  At 30-06 velocities on deer size game I would feel 100% confident in the 165 Interlock even if it involved a through shoulder shot to get to the vitals.  A deer just aint tough enough to blow that bullet up at moderate velocities.

The 165 Interlock would not inspire that much confidence if I were propelling it at magnum velocities or if I were taking on heavier game.  It would probably work fine, but to me CONFIDENCE COUNTS.  When you have fully evaluated all the comments and have developed a load that gives you good results, how confident will you be?

JMC, before you put that thumbhole stock on your hunting rifle, think about what it will be like trying to take the safety off in a quick situation.  Been there, done that and found it very ackward.
 :(
Thanks for your input. I never thought about the safety in the thumbhole. they have a JRS sporter that will fit the action as well. That maybe the stock to go with.

jmckinley,

I have a thumbhole on a 7mm mag, and am putting another (Boyd's) on a 22-250.  The 7mm is a Browning with the tang safety, so it is tougher to reach than most, and I have no problems.  Perhaps in a life or death situation you might be hindered, but for most of our needs it's just a matter of getting used to it.  I love the feel of a thumbhole and the extra steadiness it gives me.  So if a thumbhole is what you really want, dont be scared off, go for it.

Good luck and God Bless

Jim

I have used Hornady Heavy Mag 139 gr SST Interlokt's in my 7mag exclusively over the past 5 years for all my deer hunting.  I have taken deer from 60 to 318 yards with this load and all (9) kills have had excellent bullet performance.  One shot kills on whitetails and muleys.  My son has taken 3 whitetails with his 7-08 out to about 150 yards with the green box corelokt's (140 gr) with same results.  No premium bullets needed for my deer hunting, but if it works for you, go for it.

Jim, thanks for your input. I really like the feel of a thumbhole stock. You are right  about a life and death situation and I don't think I'll be hunting Killer Mulies or goats for that matter. I hunt Bear on occasion, even then it should workout. If my rifle don't work my 44mag will!!!

Sure were alot of deer killed with a round lead ball 150 years ago.  Until 1948 and the introduction of the Partition every thing was killed with a standard bullet.  SO CHILL OUT guys, you have your reasons and I have my reasons. Why can't we all just get along?

I would shoot what my gives me the most overall confidence in accuracy and on game performance.  Be it a standard bullet or premium.

Just my experience... I have shot several deer and a few hogs with my .280. All with the exception of one were shot with Winchester Supreme 140 grain Ballistic Silvertips with a published speed of 3050fps. I have never chronied my rifle, but I suspect my muzzle velocity is a bit less since my rifle has a Boss on the tip which shortens the barrel length a bit. All were one shot kills. Interestingly, the one that ran the furthest was a fat doe that I shot with factory, regular ole' green box Remington 140 grain Core-loct. She was quartering away and the bullet entered a bit high right behind the last rib and lodged in her offside front shoulder blade. Some would say this is close to perfect bullet performance with all of the bullet's energy being expended inside the deer's vitals, but all the same, she ran close to 200 yards. The rest that were shot with the BT's dropped within 30 yards of where I shot them, with all bullets exiting, with a couple of shots approaching 300 yards. So technically, I have not had a bullet failure either way, but, this experience tells me that in my case, the ballistic tips are much more effective at bringing a deer down quickly. Quite devastating. The bottom line though, the end results in both bullets have been dead deer. Think about it this way though... If you had the choice of being shot by a well placed shot through the vitals by a regular plain Jane bullet or a premium bullet, which would you choose? I think I would choose quick death over the alternative, even if it did mean just a few seconds difference. Shoot me with the Ballistic Tip. :-D
