Gee, I seem happy with only 3 barrels!
« on: February 23, 2005, 05:26:34 PM »
First off,  not a "shot" against you guys that own  a ton of barrels.

I have a Contender with 3, Super 14" barrels.

A .22 match grade that does 3/8" groups at 50 yards(tree rats),
A .223 for target shooting and varmints(groundhogs), and a...
.44 magnum for deer and target( I live in Ohio  only allows straight wall cartritges for deer).

The best part of Contenders, you can buy just enough barrels to make you happy!

You are missing the 45/410 barrel.
It will be cheaper to just buy one instead of spending all that money on medication.

True...I'm sure that you can get by with only 3 barrels, but after seeing the list of barrels posted awhile ago, there are just so many!!  I find that every time I buy a barrel and say "that's enough," I get the itch again.

You have chosen a great selection in the three that you have GhosTT.  They cover most huntable game in Ohio, I imagine.

Give it some time, the cravings can begin at any time...
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

i probably had all the barrels i needed when i had 3... cant really remember that far back... now i got 2 dozen & there are still several i am looking for several. Might be cheaper to get medicated!

There is a big gun show this weekend & Ed will be there (or as i call him, "My Junkie"...) Maybe Contenders ARE a drug, a very addictive one, and come to think of it my hands are gettin itchy & i'm startin to sweat...

I kinda feel the same way right now. I started off with a 22 match and a 7-30 when I first got my contender. I've gone through a fair number of barrels, and now I'm back down to my original 2 plus a 257 JDJ. Not sure how long the JDJ will stay around since the 22 and the 7-30 will cover everything I need out of the contender.  I'm not sure when it changed, but I've certainly not been in the barrel collecting mode lately. I'm very content with my 2 primary barrels. (That may change at any time, though)

8) Owning a Contender is kinda like having a fever you can't get rid of.  I started out with a frame and .223.  Had to have a scope, had to have a 30-30, it needed a scope too.  Then a .22, 357 Max and a .44.  That was 20 plus years ago.  Today I have 29 diffrent barrels, four frames and scopes on about half of the barrels.

Seems everytime I go to a gun show I end up looking at barrels, you know, it's buy something you really can't use at a price you can't refuse.

I guess I really screwed up,   about a month ago I bought my first Encore, it came with 4 barrels, and I've already slipped another one in the safe.

I have only 3 barrels, but I am not happy about it. I have a .223, a 7-30 Watters, and a 45 Win Mag. I need a 6mm and a 357 max and a .22 or .17 rimfire. What I have will work for everything I do, but a new barrel will allow me to buy new dies and spend time working up loads. Or in the case of the rimfires, playing with chosing the right factory loads. I guess I have the Contender virus.

Why are you folks with just a few barrels trying to bring logic into this!   Heck if I only had guns that filled a need I would have to sell about 4 shotguns, 5 rifles, 1 revolver and 7 Contender barrels.  You are correct though, three barrels will fill the need pretty well.  Guns, reloading and shooting is one of my main hobbies which is why I have so many (that plus I have a real understanding wife!).  Plus I enjoy buying and selling Contender barrels and trying something new.  I will probably come to my senses someday and get rid of everthing that does not fill a need. :-D

10 inch .22 for vermin

14 inch .223 for big vermin

15 inch .204 Ruger for big vermin at long distance

14 inch 30-30 AI cause I like it.

14 inch .35 Rem for deer size critters

14 inch .358 JDJ for big critters

14 inch .45-70 for big critters at short distances

Then all for trading fodder when somebody has one that I didn't know I would want until I saw it.

Well,

For me, I say yes.  Limited funds, many hobbies - including waterfowling, dog training as well as kids, bills, retirement fund, etc.  can only have so much spending money so much time for range/reloading/hunting and everything else....

So I narrowed it down to three barrels for me... 14" 30-30 SS, 14"  .222 SS and I currently have a 13" custom 22WMR SS on order.  That pretty much does it for me in NY.

I would like more, but hey, the bottom line....enjoy whatchagots!

Somehow I've ended up with six barrels... now how did that happen!

I wanted a Contender badly, and the first one I saw had a 45 Colt on it. So I bought it, not knowing that it wasn't a 45/410, which is what I really wanted... plus, it was the old "hard to open" frame. oh well, live and learn.

Then at a gunshow, that Super 14 223 looked so good on that  "easy open" frame I wanted, and the TC scope just added to the appeal, so I bought it. Added a custom 10" 410 barrel as well.

Then I decided I needed a 44 Mag.  I bought an old Octagon. Put 10 rounds through it - Ouch, it took my thumb off!  OK, chalk that up to a learning experience.

Then I thought that a rifle would be cool, so I bought a composite stock, and a 21" 30-30 barrel. Loved it!!! It will be my deer gun for the fall.

Then I found a Super 16 223, been slapping jackrabbits with it for two months, and loving it. Got some great loads, and there's a ton o' jacks around here. I think perhaps the S14 will have to go!

Just checked my draw results, and I got an Elk tag for the fall (in Wyoming). I don't have a Contender barrel that's appropriate for that. I wonder if my Ruger  Model 77 Mk II 30-06 is good enough? Just kidding --  I've got some nice 180 grain Partitions loaded up and its all sighted in....  too bad Elk season is still 7 months away!

May be I need an Encore with a 300 Win Mag barrel...   oh. stop it!!!!

Me like many others - have a lot of barrels, but which of them do I use?
Only two: 14" in cal. 22 LR, and a 15" 375 JDJ - both scoped with Leupold 2,5-8x.

Hmm, I'm down to four Contender pistol barrels. A VVCG 22 Mag that is the mainstay walk around varmint whacker. A T/C 10" 357 that is a blast to shoot with handloads. A  T/C SS S14 .223 that doesn't get a lot of shooting time anymore (for the effort I just use the long gun .223s). And a S14 hunter 30-30 that does the rest with 125 NBTs.

Three frames, two of which are full time carbine and one does the switch a roo with the pistol barrels.

No 22LR in Contender pistol. I have an old Ruger MK1 with 1000's of rounds down it and a CZ75 Kadet kit for my 9mm. The Ruger hasn't been shot since I got the Kadet, which is as accurate as the Ruger and super fun to shoot. Big gun feel.....

You really do have it covered with those three.   Finances and kids in college limit the number of barrels I can buy so I have to be somewhat selective.  Here are the 3 I have now.

Super 14, in .45 Colt/.410 for fun/grouse
Super 14, in .30-30, six-groove for U.P. Whitetails
10" Octagon .45 Colt barrel  (just because it's a .45 Colt)

I would like to get two more in the near future

A Super 14, .22LR match barrel for practice/plinking
A Super 14 .223 for varmints

I think I would be well satisfied with just those 5 barrels.

14" 7.62x39
15" 30-30 AI
15" 357 Herrett
12" 357 Maximum
24" 222 Remington

I really need a 15" 35 Remington to round out my 35 caliber selection.

I have an Encore and presently  have only three barrels ... ironically all in chamberings you can get for a Contender.

12 inch .45-410
12 inch 44 magnum
15 inch 6.8 SPC

I realize the Encore can handle much more, but I really like the fact that the Encore frame is overbuilt for these rounds and the barrel lengths are plenty efficient for them.

But I'm far from done accumulating barrels. Something either bigger or hotter may be in my not-so-distant future.

I have to agree, I only have 4 barrels, ( encore SS ) 22lr, 223, 45/410 and 44 mag.  At time I think of getting others but I probably wouldn't shoot them enough to justify the expense. The best part of this whole deal, is for our anniversary she said pick what you want and has never said a thing about getting extra barrels.. I guess spending a couple of grand on her diamonds ring worked. I GUESS IT'S A WIN WIN.

2 Encore frames and 2 old style Tenders here.

10" 22 Hornet
12" 44 mag
Super 14 30/30

10" 7mm-08
15" 375 JDJ

( oh, and a G2 carbine w/ 30/30 that'll prolly never see handgun grips )
