To the credit of these rifles accuracy, I believe these barrels to be made by E.R. Shaw. Or at least they were I first seen these back in August of 2004, and had to do some real invesigating to find out more about it. Turns out that Mossberg evidently bought out Charter Arms, and the late Field King from them is yours truely=Mossberg 100-ATR
Perhaps this link might prove to be an interesting read for interested buyers.

I have always for many years been a wood guy if its not real wood its just doesn't feel like a real rifle in my hands. But I have to admit it I always run into monsoon's(pouring rain or blizzard snow) when i'm hunting sometimes. One time I was sitting in the pines in a blizzard and after hours I looked like that frozen guy on Jerimia Johnson with the 50 hawken. My 444 marlin was covered with snow too. I don't like to get my guns soaked with water all the time I don't think its good for the wood. I do clean them right after and oil them up. I was out in a monsoon once looking for a wounded bear someone else shot. We when thru 4 changes of dry hunting clothes in that day. Again my gun was soaked being out the whole day in the pouring rain so were we too.
My point is i'm not too crazy about synthetic stocks but it makes sense to me hunting in foul weather with them. I think I will buy both wood and synthetic stock rifles from now on.

After checking them out, I think the Mossberg is a better looking rifle than the Stevens 200. But, that's not saying much - we are talking about two ugly sisters here. If accuracy means anything, the Stevens wins hands down according to NRA field tests published in the American Rifleman. I would go for the Stevens.

It's funny, what drew me to this rifle, was it's no frills, rough edgedness, dense finish, and over all toughness.
Nice things are exactly that=nice. We all like them

.
But when it comes time to go out in nasty, cold, snowy wet weather while treking through woods, bryers, and muck, I really came to appreciate a rugged, no frills rifle with synthetic stock.

Since then I have shot it a few more times to verify zero before hunting. It stays at less than 1.5 MOA.

:oops: I didn't pick up that issue of American Rifleman, with the reviews in it. I have looked around the net , but to no avail.
Does anyone know of a link to it? I really want to check it out, but I have missed it.

I don't know much about the new Mossberg ATR rifle, but based on Mossberg's last foray into the rifle market with the SSi-ONE interchangable barrel single shot rifle, I'm not holding out much hope.
The SSi-ONE kind of looked like the bastard child of a mating of a Ruger #1 rear to the front of a Savage model 99! (not a pretty sight)
This particular model wasn't available for long, but was supposed to mimick the T/C Encore in that with one rifle you could have the versatility of changing barrels & forends to have everything from a shotgun to a varmint rifle to a big game rig. Rifle quickly diappeared from the marketplace and parts are non-existant now.
Early Mossberg rifles were indeed nice pieces, but not their latest attemps to get back in the rifle game (IMHO).

There is a review of the Mossberg Model 100 ATR in Fur, Fish & Game Magazine. The review is pretty much like the other reviews I have read on this rifle. The one point they did make was that this Rifle (and the rights to produce this Rifle) were purchased (by Mossberg) from Raptor Arms. The article even goes on to say what modifications Mossberg has done to the original design prior to going into production of the rifel.

Now I have not seen nor handled nor shot a Mossberg Model 100 ATR Rifle, but a friend did have a Raptor a couple years ago that I had the opportunity to handle and shoot. Hopefully Mossberg did indeed make some changes as I thought the Raptor was a piece of junk and would have preferred anything to it.

Now granted according to the article in F,F&G Mossberg did indeed make some changes to these Rifles, and hopefully they were for the better.

I went to one of the local Wally-Worlds to look at the ATR. Thet were out. However all is not lost. They had a Howaby in 300 Weatherby Magnumb marked down to $299. I bought that right on the spot.

well I took my son out today and he shot 4 three shot groups with his Mossberg ATR 30-06 at 100 yards. His first group was 1 1/4", the rest of groups were .5 to .75. this was done with hand loads. I just had to smile when looking through the spoting scope and he said "Dad I am ready for deer hunting!" I know this gun is not as pretty as my custom guns but it really isnt that bad. It seems solid, safe and shoots good.

Aaah, you give me hope. I still have not purchased dies in .270 for mine, so am still shooting "Fusion" 130 grain factory ammo from Federal. I shot a group at 25 yards, a group at 50 yards, and two groups at 100 today off the bench. They were touching at 25, a half-inch at 50 yards, and both 5-shot groups at 100 were 1.25" center-to-center.

I'm guessing that tweaking a load by hand would improve the accuracy, since that has been the case with every other rifle I've owned. Maybe I should get off my butt and get the dies.....

I'll throw my vote to the Stevens and Savage.

Lately I've looked pretty hard at both. The Stevens reminds me of the Savage rifles of a few years back, the Savage looks the same but has a higher polish and deeper blue on the metal.

Local sale prices are ..........$199 for a Stevens and $329 for a Savage with a Simmons '8 Point' scope.

Folks, I have to tell you, I am completely satisfied with my ATR. The wife bought me one as a gift when they first came out and it shoots anything I've put in it on either side of an inch at 100 yds. I've tried Rem, Win and PMP all 180 gr soft points.

I like the recessed crown and the barrel seems like it's between a standard taper and a bull. It functions smoothly, has never mis-fired or failed to feed.

It's not a prom queen and one could say the molded swivel mounts and trigger guard present a cheap appearance. Maybe so. Its all in the eye of the beholder. But for $244.00 and 1" groups I'm not going to complain very much.

Just my 2 pennies worth.
