Sako 75 deluxe or hunter
« on: November 29, 2004, 02:58:10 PM »
i want to buy a sako wood stocked rifle in 7mm rem mag and am having trouble deciding between the hunter and deluxe.  what is the quality of the wood on the hunter.  the salesman(who does not have any in stock) says the wood on the hunter looks like the wood on an 870 express - cheap!  he recommends the deluxe for a rifle i can be proud to own.  i can buy the hunter in any caliber for $995- is this a good price?

Please read the following thread before buying a Sako:

http://www.accuratereloading.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=834230&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=21&fpart=1

The thread deals with various rifles going KA-BOOM even with factory ammo.  Pics of two rifles included.

Sako is not being forthcoming about the problem and its causes, the rifles affected, and so on, and is relying on a factory recall to get the bad rifles back.  I sincerely hope Sako has a good phone number or address for all owners of affected rifles, but I doubt it - too may people are not the original owner, have moved or changed phone numbers.  I'd consider another brand.  Let me rephrase that: I WOULD NOT buy a Sako at this time.

Maybe a Tikka

Rusty 75 I would never say a Sako is not one of the finest shooting and looking guns around!  However I have some mighty fine wood on my Tikkas and they have the same barrel as the Sako.  If accuracy and good looking Walnut is the ticket maybe you could find a Tikka and take the    $ 400 plus dollars saved and put some extra with it and get a Big time scope for you total package.  I am not saying a Sako isn't better overall just another suggestion.  Buckfever

I own a Sako Deluxe in .308 and it is one of the most beautiful rifles I have ever seen.  There is no doubt that the Deluxe is in a league by itself and should not be compared to the lower level Hunter model.  Think of the Sako Deluxe like you would the Weatherby Deluxe.

I also own a Tikka Deluxe in 7mm Rem Mag, but the wood, fit, and finish is not as good as the Sako Deluxe.

As for the Sako recall, I cannot dispute what the pictures show, and am not aware if they are limited to just SS models (of which I also own one in 7mm-08).

Sako recall

The recall as stated by Sako dealers is for Stainless Barrels bought since Feb.  2004.  Call  1-800-503-8869 and have your serial Number ready, they will tell you if your gun is part of the recall.    Buckfever

Rusty,

The wood on the Sako Hunter model seems to vary considerably. I looked over several in different calibers which sported wood that was not that great. Straight grain with little variation, etc. Then I came across a 30.06 made during the Stoeger days and the wood is just spectacular. Light and dark diagonal stripes across the whole stock. I snagged it immediately. If you have the time, keep on looking. They're out there.

The Hunter for $995.00 is relatively average priced.

Regards

I should also add that the Sako Deluxe has more applications of gloss coating on their wood, so then it's not just that the wood itself is select, but the actual process of glossing is more advanced, as well as, I think, the blueing.  True, the Deluxe is more expensive than the standard version, but a lot more goes into it.

Don't get me wrong, the standard Sako is still a very fine rifle, and the Deluxe is actually a wonderful work of art and craftmanship.  The question is, if you buy a Deluxe, will you actually take it out in the field and hunt with it? :)

I have 2 hunters-----one has very nice wood----to other is so-so-------paid $849 a piece for mine.

But in no way is the wood on either like that on an Express----I could beat the stock on my Sako's against a brick wall and maybe have a few scratches-----do that with Express wood and you'll have a handfull of splinters.

The wood on the regular Sako does vary.  But I have never seen one that looks like Rusty's salesman said.  The costs for new Sako Hunters in my 100 mile radius run right at 975.00  Omaha's prices are very good.  There are still new Stoegers on the shelves in some stores.  I have a 308 Sako imported by Stoeger (1997) and the barrel is not freefloated.  But the later ones are as are the new ones imported by Beretta.  I you want to be guaranteed a drop dead stock (that you are ordering) go with the delux.  Best bet is to try to buy off of the shelf to get a really nice base model.  But like I said of the 15-20 Sako rifles I have seen in the last 2 years only one had a plain stock.
