Broke in my Savage .300WM LA
« on: August 22, 2004, 05:00:10 AM »
Finally got to shoot it. All I can say is that a .300 WM does have a nice kick to it (my first encounter with this caliber). I'm impressed. Althought the boresite done by local sporting goods store was WAY off and I had to go through 30 rounds to get it acceptable at 100 yards (there were some fun shots included). After the first 3 shots and punching the tube after each, I had to bring in in to 25 yards and get my zero there. Got it dead on, and then had some fun at that range, then moved back to 100 yards. It was off some, but got it close before my shoulder gave out. I was sore the next day, but it was fun. I'll get it closer on the next trip to the range which will not require as many rounds. My main thing was getting used to the recoil and accustomed to the rifle. This caliber is definately not for plinking. 20 rounds is about where comfort dissipates.

You shouldn't had to shoot 30 times to get your rifle in after hitting paper at 25 yards. I have a 300 win theres no way. Did you wait 3 to 5 min between shots? Is your scope mounts loose? If your afraid of recoil get a break.

Come on, give him a break....he just got a new "toy" and HAD to "play" with it. :)

He did mention getting accustomed to the rifle and recoil and both are extremely important to becoming proficient with the tool...plus the boresighting being off does not help with ammo use. And the FUN shots.

How do you like it? Did it group well for you?
Got a bruise from it?

Stay Safe. Happy Shooting/Hunting  :D

Let me elaborate...

It did not take 30 rounds to get on paper...at any range.
3 at 100 yards were off paper...actually, only about 10 shots were required to get close to zero...the rest were fun shots.
I went to 25 yards, was on paper and just played around getting used to the recoil and stuff...this aint a 30-06 ya know.
yes I waited up to 10 minutes between shots to let the barrel cool...and I cleaned it after each shot too......
The boresite WAS off, alittle more than I like, but not the worst I have seen. The shop usually uses a laser sighter, but it was broken so they used the old school method.
Afraid of recoil? Please....
I love the rifle and the caliber. Something about the recoil and muzzle blast relates to my military occupation...field artillery!!! Big guns...big recoil hoo-ah!
And the bruise? Left a nice pattern on my shoulder..LOL!!

Happy shooting.....

Don't clean after each shot thats the problem it will threw that bullet off every time. I will go to the range just before deer season shoot my rifle clean that sob after season. If you put oil in that BARREL it can threw that bullet off no bull sht. When at the range target shooting I SHOOT ALL DAY LONG go home then clean it just try it.

Punching the tube after each shot is not for accuracy to begin with. It is to help break in the barrel. There are many articles out there refering to this method. In fact there are even bullets out there coated in mild abrasives just for this purpose (you have to load them yourself). Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's called "fire lapping". One article I recall is at the Snipers Hide site...features an article related to this. There may even be articles in here about it...I haven't looked.

Anybody else done this?

The choice of barrel break in is a much debated topic, so I will leave that to the old saying "To each, his own."

I usually keep my barrel clean when practicing, because when I am hunting it IS clean so I like to keep it in the same condition and also zeroed in the same condition, as it will be in when I depend on it.

As for "fire lapping" I seldom practice this because it increases throat size thus decreasing barrel life..."in short", the reason for fire lapping is to "groove" the barrel so the bullet will have an even stricter route as compared to just the twist rifling...for a competition rifle or a sniping rifle I use "fire lapping" but for general hunting and shooting I do not.

Happy Shooting. :D

Sorry for the suggetion just trying to help a rookie. I hope you get over your gun shy. Your rifle is very accurate and the caliber is very flat shooting. Reading articles and life experiences are two different things. The man behind the rifle might be the problem.

Me too. I just hope you did not try fire lapping your brand new magnum.

I agree with that 110%. and again, I hope you didn't push those "sandpaper" bullets down your tube.

Dear ms,
I can not argue that either, but I don't want to judge RamJohn without even knowing how his form and performance stand up.
Sincerely,

Hi again all...sorry for the delayed response...I've been moving...to Oklahoma...you know how the Army likes to move you around...stuff has been in storage for a month...

Anyway..I appreciate all the hints and tips. I'll admit, I am a rookie when it comes to magnum calibers, but I am no rookie to rifles in general. Being Army, I know my way around small arms....qualify with 38-40 out of 40 every year with M-16's...but who cares. I grew up shooting, and will continue to do so, and I'll pass what I learn to my boys when the time is right.

As for the sandpaper rounds...no way they are going in MY rifles. I have broken in rifles without cleaning as mentioned and they can drive tacks...and I broke in this rifle having cleaned after each round, just to try something different. This is the first time I have done this, and I cannot see a difference yet as I have not done enough shooting to justify a qualified result or opinion.

Yes, I have thought about a muzzle brake, just to make it alittle more comfortable to shoot, but I see alot of mixed opinions on this too.

And lastly, I take all things in stride. Any comment pro or con, is information for me. Thats what I'm here for...to learn what I don't know...and I don't know alot...LOL. I don't take things to heart...and I have a good sense of humor, so dont sweat it.
Sorry so long

Lock and Load!

Very good idea on the barrel break in. It is going to pay off in the long run. Good article about this in the July issue of the NRA American Hunter.

Godspeed to ya.  Hope you get to stay stateside.  Thanks for doing your part for our country too.  I've been out 30years now.  FYI I HATED the M-16, of course all we had was the A-1 and I shoot left handed so you can figure out why.

If you get a muzzle brake, dont let you kids anywhere near you when you shoot.  I was next to a muzzle brake lover this last Fri morning.  Would have moved but the range was crowded and left hand bench seats are rare.  It felt like a concussion grenade everytime he pulled the trigger.

I had to time my shots between his.  The guy with the un-ported 416 Rigby, Ruger #1 had less side blast than my neighbors.  I think his was a 7mm Mag.  I HATE those things.  I say get a rifle with recoil you can handle and live with it.  Jusy MY opinion.

Enjoy OK.

I agree a little with the previous post.  If you get a break please be considerate to your range neighbors.  I've never shot one, but having a .300 win I don't blame those who do get em.  But boy howdy its not fun to be next to one at the range - especially if there is a roof over the firing points.
