280 remington. I think it really is the best of all worlds.

I have to agree with that, although it was not on my list as one of my favorite Remington Cartridges, and I still prefer the 7mag over the .280, the .280 is perfectly balanced in performance and recoil...if only there was a larger selection of factory loads...Remington NEEDS to add the .280 to the Premium line of factory loadings!!!

I prefer the .270, we have our own opinions on what the "best" cartridge is, but hey...life would be boring if all liked the same thing......besides Remington  :)

The .270 is a GREAT all around cartridge, I just don't like anything with Winchester's name in, on, or around it...  :)  :-D

Just Joking.  :D

Ppfftt....come on Steve, you have to admit. Your door swings both ways with Remington and Winchester.  :-D  :D And since the .270 and .280 are almost identical (I'm sure all of you knew that), I'm just hoping you fellas are braggin about your favorite.

You are not wrong for using the .270.
We both have a couple things in common...We are dead set on ONE cartridge, you the .270 Win. and me the 7mm Rem Mag, and neither of us uses a Remington Rifle for our big game hunting needs...Unless I am wrong, you prefer a Winchester 70 Classic Featherweight(nice rifle)and I prefer a Ruger M77.

The # 1 hunter,
Lets see now, If i read the topic right it and i quote ( whats your fovorite remington cart. ) hmmmmmm. Guess i can't give you too much grief as
one of my favorite people in the gun world thought the 270 was the ticket on every thing, But that was before the 280 came out. When the 280 did come out Jack Oconner said he liked the 280 but he stayed loyal to his teachings on the 270 REM Just joking I know its Mossberg. All Joking aside the 270 is ok. I had a chance to meet Jack Oconner in 1954 and it was the  high lite of my life. To talk to him you would never know he was the same man that wrote all those hunting stories, He was very quite and humble, My Hero Jack. The 280 Rem it has served me very very well.  It drops deer in their tracks. My 700 Mtn rifle shoots one hole groups at 100 yds with Remington 140gr ballistic tips but Reminton stopped loading them.
squeeze it, don't pull it!!!!

I'm partial to the .257 Roberts 700 Classic. I also like the .260 Remington, 7mm-08 and the .308. The .350 Remington Mag. is fine but just in the Model 700 or Model Seven with a longer, non-vented rib barrel.

The .22 centerfires: .223, .222 Remington and the. 221 Fireball.

I've love to see Remington or any other maker come out with a .338-06 as well, Bubba Jack. It would sell far better than the .35 Whelen, although it is a fine cartridge.

My most favorite is the 260 Rem..  Light recoil, good B.C., good sectional density and accurate.

Most of the time I shoot the 260.  before that I liked the 7mm08.  But if I'm going to hunt the bigger critters  I like the 35 whelan.  The 35 is an awsome cartridge.   Don

I guess I will be the fly in the ointment here. To me the 25-06 is one of the best of the rifle cartridges that Remington has domesticated. This is from a web article from Guns and Ammo magazine;

"The most useful of the quarter-bores is the .25-06, a popular wildcat that was legitimized by Remington in 1969. Accurate, fast and powerful, the .25-06 is still mild in recoil. It's far and away the most popular of the .25s and with good reason. The only surprise is that it isn't more popular than it is. I personally like it for medium-size deer, but a whole lot of folks use it for much larger game than that. With the heavier bullets, I suppose there isn't much you can't do with a .25-06, but for me it's best suited for the antelope/deer/sheep class of game."

My love affair with quarter bores started early when I bought a 98 Mauser rebarreled in .257 Roberts. I used it for deer, groundhogs and feral hogs until I traded it for a .250 Savage lever action. It was sweet but I had the need for speed. When I retired it I lusted after another .25 until I purchased a Sendero in 25-06. The die was cast. My next bolt rifle will be in 25-06 if that says anything.

1)The 44Rem Mag is my most successful cartridge.

2)The 35Rem in a 336SC is my rifle of choice for deer.

3)The 280Rem MR-7 my favorite all around gun.

I can't believe I had to scroll all the way through this thread to find a 35 Rem fan!

You can tote a 336 through the woods all day long and it just doesn't gety heavy.  Then if bambi does decide to jump up in front of you, that 35 cal pill can sure give him a real bad day!

Love my 35!

280 Remington

I have killed deer with a 6MM Remington and a 44 Remington Magnum too.  I'd say that I'm most  familiar and happy with the 280 though.

My first centerfire rifle was a model 700 ADL in 6mm Remington.  I shot my first buck with it back in 1967.  That being said, my favorite Remington cartridge is the .280.  When handloaded, it is more versatile than the .270 because you can shoot heavy spitzer bullets in it.  Remington needs to take advantage of this fact in their factory loads.  They need to bring out a 160 grain Nosler partition load for the .280.  They could also load the 175 grain pointed Core-Lokt bullet that they use in the 7mm magnum.  Both of these loadings would make the .280 a better heavy game cartridge than its current factory loadings allow it to be.

I am surprised this thread just re-surfaced.  I would also go with the 280.  It is the sweetest shooting cartridge I have ever shot.  And since I reload I can give it everything it needs to be a great all around rifle.

I don't know if I made this comment or if someone else made this comment but I'm gonna re-establish it again. I think that if Remington had come out w/ the .280 sooner than Winchester had come out w/ the .270 it would have sold hotter than the .270. Lil weird, no?  :D

I like the 7MM Ultra Mag for it's speed accuracy and knock down power down range.  I like the 6MM for it's speed and accuracy down range.

Well, has Remington really come out with any new cartridges since just after the introduction of smokeless powder? I'm thinking about the .25, 30, 32, and 35 REM. Almost all the above mentioned rounds were well established wildcats before Remington made " factory rounds" out of them.
