Thanks Chuck. OK 7Mag, your turn!
Fishman029,
I totally missed this post, and for some reason I see you want my opinion on why the 7mm/.284cals are the best....well I can not say that it/they are the "best" but I can tell you why I chose the 7mm Remington Magnum as my favorite and why it has been and will continue to be for years.
To keep it short....I killed my first deer when I was 6 1/2 years old and did it with a 700 BDL 30'06 and have been hunting deer by myself with the '06 since I was 10 here in the hills and hollers of Kentucky and Tennessee, so I was accustomed to heavy recoil, but even for myself recoil is a factor...I shot every caliber I could get my hands on and the old 7mag a neighbor had, gave me a chance to fire the one caliber that provided me with the flattest trajectory and more than adequate knockdown power with the most recoil I cared to take in a 40 shot practice sitting...so I immediately made up my mind, the 7mag was for me....my Dad tried to talk me into keeping on using the '06 but to me I was "done" with it, just wanted a little change......also worth noting is that the 7mm/.284 is probally the least "fussy" caliber I have ever shot and "just about" all loads will shoot fine in "most" 7mm/284s....the .280 is a great compromise between the 7mm/08 and the 7mm Rem. Mag. so if I ever "change" again I will probally go with the .280 for the "one gun situation" but I DO use a variety of calibers but I have to admit that I will use the 7mag on everything in my part of the country or the whole country for that matter, and with PROPER PLACEMENT and bullet choice there will be very little meat/pelt damage(a lot less than "most" people think when they hear/see the word "MAGNUM")
I can not say the 7mm/280s are the best but they are a good compromise between the 26cal and the 30cal and I can also tell you the 7mag is my choice and it has never failed me but for the record the old '06 never failed me either.
If I failed to answer as you expected please leave any comments/questions, and I will leave a more "complete" opinion for you, but I believe I covered it as good as I can with out getting into numbers.
Happy Hunting
