mauser 98 project
« on: April 11, 2004, 10:46:35 AM »
I have the itch to build a Mauser 98 rifle.I wanted to start with a quality action the mount it into a semi-custom stock.
I have ordered a book The Mauser Bolt-actions:A Shop Manual
by Jerry Kuhnhausen. Is the American Gunsmithing Institute video worth the expense $79.00?
I have heard that the Oberndorf Mausers are some of the best. Does anyone sell just the actions for these rifles? I have a C&R license so I should be able to order without much trouble.
I will need a semi-inletted stock and one that is oversize so I can shape it to fit. Do you have any suggestions for stock suppliers? Do they give you any options such as drop at the heel?
My previous experience is in building a flintlock rifle from components.

I know the urge. Been there and done that and will again.   First with a C&R you cannot order just an action. you have to get the whole rifle, actions do not follow under the C&R permit.

The Oberndorf Mausers may be good but I don't know if they are the best, they are probably the most expensive.  I personally like the BRNO rifles for action.  Have built several on the VZ-24 actions and on the 98/22 actions.  They are very reasonable now and you should be able to order on for 60-70 dollars. The Argentine 1909 mauser are also a very good starting spot since they already have the hinged floorplate.

I think the last place I ordered walnut stock was from the Great American Stock Company, I don't have a net address but Google should be able to find it.

Very good suggestions there.  I like the Bruno actions but the Argentines are getting hard to find and more than a little pricey..  I like GreatAmerican  and have used them several times.  You might also try Fred Wenig at   http://www.wenig.com/
This is the best of the remains of the old Fajen/Bishop stockmakers and Fred is really a fine gentleman.  These folks will get you what you want and always have provided me with good value for the dollar.  One caution though,,  the road you've embarked on leads to a life of addiction and poverty.  I traveled it many years ago and have never regretted it...!!!!!!  Have a lot of fun..
