Cataract Surgery

Curious, who’s had cataract surgery, what type IOL did you get and do you have any regrets? I’m weighing it out myself.

I had lazic surgery almost 20 years ago that gave me 2020 vision. Then over the years I developed cataracts. When they remove the cataracts, they cut out the lenses in your eyes also, and replace them with crystal lenses. I now have 2020 again at 75yoa. My wife had both hers removed also, with the same results. There isn't a downside, get'em taken out.
To keep the cataracts is to slowly go blind.

Had my cataracts done almost two years ago, got the standard single focus lenses and couldn't be happier.  I have to use readers, but distance vision is great.  The risk is minimal and the benefits are tremendous. Get it done, you won't regret it.

Simple procedure, no pain and no real recovery period. Next day you're good as new. You will be absolutely amazed how well you can see again, how bright the world is again how vivid colors are again.

Just do it. It's prolly been ten years or so now for me.

I almost forgot about the colors, etc - and boy are you right!  They did one eye the first week, and it was just amazing how much different colors were from eye to eye. It was more than just getting rid of the "fog" you look through with cataracts. I first noticed that white was actually white through the eye that had been done but tinted yellow out of the other (I learned that your lenses yellow with age and exposure to UV light.)  And the colors were amazing - it felt like seeing things for the first time.

I think I’m sold on getting them, just need to decide what type. They can grow expensive, out of pocket, if you add too much to basic lenses. Really tired of wearing glasses. I paid for an evaluation and it’s good for about 6 months, so I’ve got a little time to think. Still have questions.

What Bill Said!  I couldn't believe what I saw when I turned on my gas stove the first time after having it done! :o

The way it went for my wife, although I don't recall any new lenses being installed. ..But I guess it likely differs, depending upon what the doctor determines.

No Pete, cataract surgery requires the removal of the lens GOD provided you and replacement with a new lens. Basically the difference in the procedure is how that old lens is busted up and removed.

Supposedly doing it with laser is quicker and easier. I didn't have the money for laser so I went with the older original procedure and it was quick easy and pain free.

I think there were options on what kind of lens  to have installed. Again being broke most I had the cheapest and it's just fine all these years later.

Both my wife and I have been told we are cataract surgery candidates. Glad to hear things seem to go well.

Don't need cataract surgery, but with the way you guys talk about it, I want it.   ;D  Could get rid of my cheaters and be able to see iron sights again.  At distance, no issues.

Well Casull, that brings up a good question; how well are you guys seeing iron sights after surgery? Especially if your lens is for distance only. Are sights fuzzy?

Saw the irons much better after the surgery. I'm now 10 or more years beyond it and am having additional eye issues unrelated to the cataract surgery. I had a stroke in the left eye and for a few years got shots, yeah a needle in the eyeball, regularly. It's now been more than a year, maybe a year and a half since the last shot. Hopefully I will not need anymore.

But I had been noticing blurring of my vision, most looking at my monitor about 4' away and the TV about 16-18 feet away. So last time in I had them test me and they fitted me with some glasses. Most of the time my vision is clear enough without the glasses but sometimes they do help.

My 80 year old eyes are no longer 20-20 like they were at 79. But when I retired back in '95 my vision was 20-80 in left eye and 20-250 in right eye. That right eye vision is almost officially blind. Dunno how or why but after retirement they slowly improved to 20-20 again and stayed there a lot of years from around age 51 to age 79 I guess. Now to see the irons I need my glasses or a pair of reading glasses with 1.25 diopters correction. Both work well.

Have been thinking about a monofocal lens for distance, that’d mean I might need readers for intermediate and reading distances. Just wondering how that’ll affect my shooting. Might be red dots and scopes from there out.

Just checked and the (factory) sights on my S&W Bodyguard 380 are crystal clear with my right arm fully extended (one hand grip) and 2 hand grip.  8)

Mine would be too, if my arm were about a foot longer.
