see where the army isnt ordering anymore. there being replaced by a chev colorado based smaller faster unit and polaris razors. said armor doesnt mean much today with drone missiles and speed and agility would actually make them safer than a humvee. almost sad to see them go. theyve become probably more used and iconic than even the jeep
The new GMs should have some armor, since they still have to deal with small arms fire, .22 to .50 cal.
It seems readily apparent however, that the armor on today's Humvee is not adequate for today's weapons. However, it was helpful during the Iraq conflict !
My Marine grandson shipped to Iraq in 2005...just in time to help with the "surge".. On the way they stopped at Rota, Spain..to pick up some of the first armored
Humvees.
His first day in combat..and the crew dismounted, as they were fired on. He climbed down from his 50 cal ring on top. Almost immediately an IED exploded..but it was the other side of the Humvee.. If it didn't have the armor up-grade..who knows.
..Another time, his Humvee was hit by an RPG..it hit the window opposite the driver..Grandson was up in the ring mount..the RPG stuck in the thick window lucite..then discharged.
Their translator was seated there..took his arm off, and spread it around inside...they went back to theFOB..with the RPG stuck in the glass.
