..Bad mistake by a boot...

Marine boot trainee punches DI.. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RQpkSCW4tHQ     ...Bad news; now he can face the consequences

..Back in the 1950s, during my first hitch, that occasionally happened, and usually ended up with the trainee learning a valuable lesson. Such was true for both Army and Marines.

That was in the old "brown boot" Army..  Then by the late 1950s a change came with the change in Class A uniform and wearing of black boots.

Apparently it was a societal change, where things were now settled legally, rather than with a "decision by knuckles"..  It appears the Marines followed..but I'll let a Marine speak for that !

I served 2 separate enlistments , one starting in '55 then with the Cuban crisis, one in starting in '62...  What a change and awakening for me.

As acting platoon Sgt.,  I had one obstreperous trainee that was habitually disruptive, seemingly challenging me.  Field first suggested i challenge him back and  teach him a short course in chain of command.

So, one day while marching iup the company street, he was particularly problematical, so I hauled him off to the boiler room of one of those old wooden barracks,
and gave him the opportunity to teach me something...

He quickly hung his head and declined...so back to formation, where he seemed much improved for the coming weeks.

When the word got back to field first Sgt  He then informed me that it is good for me that the "lesson" I meant to teach, did not transpire...or I may have lost a stripe !

Times had changed, and his talk about doing it the old way, was just plain old bluster..

There's a lot of barking dogs these days. This punch and run knucklehead ankle biter likely will have a hard time for a good time to come.

Right; unless he learns soon, he will have a hard time for some time. It's likely he will spend some time in crossbar hotel..

I do hope he "gets it" soon, since a bad discharge is no easy thing to deal with throughout one's life...

back in the day he would have ended up in the brig waiting his dishonorable discharge. id bet today theyre looking at how the DI was picking on him and he will quietly be given an honorable discharge and probably get VA disability for the rest of his life for ptsd. what he should have got was sent back to his barracks for one long night of blanket parties then whats left of him tossed in the brig!

During my Marine boot in 1974, after a rough morning, one recruit thought it was a good idea to urinate on the deck in the large common area. You know, the polished floor that everyone was lovingly polishing the night before? One of the junior Drill Instructors went right to him and basically mopped the floor with him, much to the silent cheer of the rest of the platoon. The sergeant and the recruit were reassigned outside the platoon, and we never saw either of them again.

We had motivational "interventions" day to day. Recruits could be assigned outside platoon activities to "one day dirt"  which was a day of exercise and obstacle course in water and mud, with rifle and canteen belt. They would appear at noon chow looking like POW's, and be all cleaned up by their own effort, rifle and all, by evening chow. After seeing that, most of us would stay in the program, very motivated to succeed.  ;)

At one point there was some sort of investigation by a civilian panel into allegations of abuse by Drill Instructors on recruits. It was total hogwash, and the Sergeants came away with halos and recommendations for promotions.  ::)

I had a high school buddy who enlisted at the same time. He took a swing at a Drill Instructor. After they picked him off the deck, he lost two weeks pay, his guaranteed specialty, and was reassigned at the Marine Corps pleasure. Idiot.

That would perhaps, have been the case under the Obama/Biden fiasco..but I doubt it would fly with Pete Hegseth !
