Gonna get another bike!
« on: June 30, 2025, 02:01:10 PM »
I posted this over on the new Graybeard site I should have posted it here.  Sorry for the cross posting boys.  :-[

I've decided to get another motorcycle; almost 80 trips around the sun notwithstanding.  ;D

After 5 years of siting around doing little except waiting to die, I'm making changes in my life. As most of the old timers here know, after Kathie passed I stopped doing anything. Including visiting with y'all here at GBO! So, now I'm working on my attitude toward what I'm going to do with whatever time I have left. I started by posting here and taking better care of myself. Doing that and feeling much better, mentally and physically, I've decided I'm going to do more! More of anything and everything that strikes my fancy! That includes riding!

I stopped riding years ago for a number of reasons. Now some of those reasons are gone and I don't much care about the ones that remain... soooo

I still won't be able to ride with the pack, nevertheless I'll be able to ride any other time I want! Like going to Club meetings/get togethers, out for a beer or just because I want to ride!

I won't be riding at night or doing any long trips or Iron Butts so I don't need a dresser like the one I had. I've decided on getting what we used to call a "bar hopper;" maybe something in the Indian Larry style.

I used to tell my Troopers, "death is not an excuse for failure." But in this case it's more like "at my age the possibility of a life sentence is not the deterrent it used to be."
With that in mind and as always, constructive criticism is welcome.  ;)

Brother, I don’t know you or anything about your past, but I say live life. If you can handle the bike you want, get it and ride your ass off. Hat’s off to ya!

good for you pal. wife chuckled the other day. we stopped for gas on the way home from the VA and about a dozen harleys pulled in. dont think there was a single one under 70 in the bunch! dont ride like i used to but even a 100 mile ride is therapy. lately its been more dirt bike than harley but my harley is going NO WHERE. If i had to id even buy one of those little fake sportsters. Im not giving up on life till God hits the switch. Me and the recliner just dont get along. I kind of knew youd come around.

Good for you. Life is very short, so while you are able, live it to its fullest. I wasn't familiar with the Indian Larry style bikes. They look pretty cool. Let us know what you decide on.

Five or six years ago I thought my riding days were over. A riding partner and better half suggested I look at a Harley trike. That's been my ride ever since. Long rides of 200 or 300 miles are minimal but fewer miles whenever I want are the standard. Still do Tail of the Dragon although not as much or at speeds of a couple years ago.  Eighty two years old. Not ready to give it up.

I had a really nice Heritage that I had customized and Linda and I put a lot of miles on it. In the 4 years I worked in sales for HD we had 3 salesmen killed, and one that couldn't work for over a year.
We had customers that were constantly getting hurt, and some killed.
I sold mine when I turned 70 and caught a lotta flack from friends, customers, and Linda.
Truth is, I wasn't afraid so much of gettin killed as I was gettin maimed for life, and becoming a burden on my family, or end up in a nursing home and being afraid I'd  live another 10 or 15 years there.
Linda trusted me completely on the back of my bike, but we had some really close calls with texters, and drivers that weren't paying attention, or just didn't care. Did the same thing with my cow pony, got throwed when  i was 71 and broke  2 ribs. Just before  i turned 73 me and  him got into it while penin a bull and I  broke 2 mor ribs. Sold him  on my 73rd birthday. I don't  bounce like I used to. Its more of a splat these days.

Good luck Richard, and take a look at the Softail Slim HD. It would fit perfectly into the bike slot you described.

Throughout life I always wanted a HD, but what Dee mentioned is the exact reason I never got a bike. I worried that something would happen to me and I wouldn't be able to provide for my family. I worked with a guy that bought a brand new HD. The first day he was riding it. He was on a secondary road when a van made a turn across his lane. He slammed into the side of the van and was killed. I know there are many other ways you can meet your demise, or end up maimed, but riding a bike on roads where there are lots of idiot drivers just adds more risk. Never questioned anyones decision to own and ride one. Except when my son was thinking about getting a bike. I ended up talking him out of it for the very same reasons I never got one. Always thought I'd maybe get one after the kids left the house, but at that time my wife became disabled who is completely dependant on me.

cant hide from death. you were dying the day you were born and God knew the exact date before your ma even got pregnant. you cant change it or stop it by changing your life. So ill live ths blink of the eye God gave me on earth. id much rather die hit by a semi on my bike than by a heart attack eating lays in a recliner watching flipping tv. or sitting in some campground staring at a fire bored out of my mind. but how you do its up to you. Me? i never have and never will that fear control my life.

Even on a 3 wheeler, riding the Tail of the Dragon at 82 is BOSS!  You are my hero!

I wasn't familiar with the Indian Larry style bikes. They look pretty cool. Let us know what you decide on.
You must be a youngster if you weren't familiar with Indian Larry!   ;)  I liked his philosophy about bikes.  One went something like "if it doesn't make it go faster or stop quicker you don't need it."  As partial to the Bobber style I am, I'm not a complete minimalist; anything after Apes and Pipes is up for compromise.  ;D

Truth is, I wasn't afraid so much of gettin killed as I was gettin maimed for life, and becoming a burden on my family, or end up in a nursing home and being afraid I'd live another 10 or 15 years there.
Dee old friend, it never ceases to amaze me how much alike we think! That is exactly how I feel!  :o  Getting maimed is the big worry.   :-\  But then, getting out of bed in the morning is a risk.  And for that matter so is staying in bed! I know that uncertainty in daily life cannot be avoided if you're truly going to live. Look at you!  You could have just as easily broken your neck coming off that nag and ended up a paraplegic (God forbid!).  But that possibility didn't stop you and the possibility of catastrophic injury isn't going to stop me.  I also figured in that "family" doesn't have the meaning for me that it used to.   :(

::) There you go, reading my mind again!  I've decided that the Softail Slim is just about the perfect bike!  Or at least the starting point for one.  ;)  Talking to a dealership about one right now!

i chuckle at some who think a motorcycle is a trip to sure death or being crippled for life. its those that dont and never rode that preach that so it is unfounded fear. at least 3 of us here are long time hard core riders, richard. dee and myself. none of us are dead or maimed from it. myself ? im messed up from my time in the service. does that mean every young adult should avoid the service. hell no! id do it all again even knowing the outcome!

people killed every day in their cars.  hundreds if not thousands of times more than on bikes. myself? ive been injured twice by car wrecks that had me overnight in the hospitaldid you park that to protect your family? so where do you draw the line between living and living in fear. if you dont like riding, fine , just dont. but dont lecture me on endangering my familys welfare because i do. look around next time your out and about. probably 75% of the people you see riding motorcycles are gray haired old coots like us. most of them even have both legs ;) dont know what some of you would do up here if you had to drive to work in a snow storm or drive the roads up here that are ice covered at least 2 months a year, MUCH more dangerous to drive your car on than riding your motorcycle on the same road in the summer. yet 80 year old women do that every day.

only family financially tied to me anymore is my wife. shed be better off for money if i died. taking care of someone injured? shes been doing that for 40 years and through 13 of my 21 surgerys. she knew that when she signed up. here it is. i MIGHT have 10 more years. maybe a few more than that not capable of really living. 10 years as we all know is a blink of an eye, do you really think im going to give up something i love for the last bit of time on earth because im afraid that 10 years might be cut to 8. my dad died at 89. he was overweight but strong. he laughed at me for working out 3 times a week but understood it was needed to overcome my injuries so i could actually live. he had high blood pressure and high cholesteral. doc put him on a diet once, it lasted 3 days! he said if eat rabbit food instead of steak and potato gave him 3 extra years in a nursing home he didnt want it. he ate what he wanted and even had a couple beers a day at the VFW till 2 days before he died.

Are you overweight? Do you eat toffu for supper or steak? if your not eating totally healthy, working out 3 times a week, walking 2 miles a day dont have perfect blood pressure and cholesterol arent you rolling the dice that you might leave your wife a widow or taking care of a stroke or heart attack victim? tell me how that risk is justified but riding a (censored word) motorcycle to the hardware store is gambling with my familys security??? lets compare deaths in this country from heart attacks and strokes and diabetes and other health problems self inflicted by people to those who die in bike accidents. you still have the samw waist size as you did in your 20's? I do. So who is putting their family in danger?  make you a deal i wont lecture you on that steak or buger your throwing on the grill today if you dont lecture me on riding my bike to town to see the parade before i throw steaks on the grill. heck im lucky if i see tommarow after this risky 4th ;D.

I sold my Indian in 2014 when a woman ran out in front of me and I almost hit train tracks at about 65 miles a hour. When it was done I sold the old girl and never looked back. I started riding a Honda 50 in 1966 and never quit until that day with my Indian. I choose other ways to get my thrills and enjoyment. If others want to ride then good for them. If you don't then good for you also. Whatever floats your boat. After my Daughter of 44 years old passed from cancer in November I decided to try and be around for my two Grandkids as long as I could. But to each their own. Its you life .

Lloyd, you are the master of everything and the king of hyperbole.  I've owned a motorcycle, but don't anymore.  Of course you jump into the hyperbole and try to claim that it's just as, or more dangerous to drive a car than to ride a bike.  Bullsh*t!!!!  No one attacked you over your thoughts, but you felt it necessary to try and belittle someone else because their ideas didn't align with yours.  That seems to be your normal MO.  I've listened to your blather for a long time.  Sometimes I agree with you and other times I just find you to be a self righteous blowhard.  I know, I know.  You've shot more deer, had more injuries, made more money, shot more guns, loaded more ammo, lifted more weight, served your country more than anybody else.  I never said anyone shouldn't ride if they want to, but NO, you shouldn't belittle someone else for choosing to do otherwise.  Just get off your high horse and shut up once in a while.  I'm done.

Well, just a couple weeks shy of 70 trips around the sun, but still riding. Started in 1971 with a Harley 350 Sprint, and now, after several FLH's and a Road King, a '96 Sportster. Arthritis in the back, so about an hour or so, 2-3 days a week, is great therapy! Only thing I'd advise you on, not sure where you live, if your close to a big city, stay alert. I live somewhat rural, and have had a couple close calls in the last few years. After bar hopping for almost 20 years, and a few close calls, it's more dangerous now with the cell phone idiots than if you drink.( My bike's in the barn, and I'm relaxing with a cigar and a drink and not going out for the night) Get a bike and enjoy!!

To set MY RECORD straight.
I got my first bike in 1962, or 63, to ride back and forth to school. As soon as I turned 16, and got my drivers license, i said so long bike, hello pickup. I've owned bikes OFF AND ON over the years, but have never been  anything close to a hard core rider, and in fact,  in my younger  days spent far more of my spare time buying, selling, and breakin horses. I found it more peaceful than motorcycles, and the motorcycle environment. When I went into law enforcement, the horses went to seldom.

I did work for HD for 4 years, and rode all their bikes, and also quit 4 times every time HD sales management came up with another hair brained sales idea. They talked me into coming back 3 times because I sold a lot of motorcycles. I spent a lot of time there around some absolutely sorry ass bikers, some really good folks, and a multitude of "hard core posers". it was an  enjoyable  experience "most  of  the  time ".

I think if Richard wants to play in the traffic on a motorcycle, that its his business, as he is a grown man. I personally enjoyed my last one, but don't want another one.
I am at the present time hard core old, but happy playin with cows, horses, and fraternizin with cowboys. And YES, its still peaceful. Most of the time.  :-\

Below is a picture of me dealing with traffic on my last "hard core ride". :)

gosh my feelings are hurt! ::) another thing i live in fear of ;D  nobodys trying to force anyone to ride but to try to say im a worse parent or spouse because i do is ridiculous. to say im rolling the dice with death or being maimed every time i ride is comical. I BELITTLED NO ONE if you took offense to MY OPINON then you might want to look in the mirror. As to me taking care of my family ill bet a dime to a 100 bucks my family will be left in as good of shape or better if i die than anyone here. i worked hard at dangerous jobs that most of you wouldnt or couldnt do, you think hanging off a 100 foot pole working 365000 volts (sorry if this bothers you)at the end of a stick is any safer than driving my bike down a 2 lane road LMAO!! I gave my family a great life and invested to make sure they would be comfortable if i died (sorry if this bothers you). id bet a good many here wont leave their wife anything but social security, so which of us is really concerned about the welfare of our family if we were to die? Ill continue to ride until I FEEL i cant. when i die at my funeral they will say i lived. God gave me a second chance back in the 70s and i could have coasted on disability for the rest of my life eating chips and watching tv (sorry if this bothers you)! but i swore right there that i WOULDNT BE A DRAG on my family and i would try to live every minute the best i could. if a boring life in a bubble is your choice than have at it. but dont come here telling me that im being selfish for enjoying my life!! if i made a personal attack in this thread bill would have removed it. now your post is nothing but a personal attack and not one thing i posted in this thread was even in reply to you. But Bill doesnt need to delete it because i can sure defend myself and dont loose a minute of sleep because you dont like me ::) maybe lighten up a bit ::) id hate to see anyone here have a heart attack and leave their wives in line for snap cards!
i chuckle at some who think a motorcycle is a trip to sure death or being crippled for life. its those that dont and never rode that preach that so it is unfounded fear. at least 3 of us here are long time hard core riders, richard. dee and myself. none of us are dead or maimed from it. myself ? im messed up from my time in the service. does that mean every young adult should avoid the service. hell no! id do it all again even knowing the outcome!

people killed every day in their cars.  hundreds if not thousands of times more than on bikes. myself? ive been injured twice by car wrecks that had me overnight in the hospitaldid you park that to protect your family? so where do you draw the line between living and living in fear. if you dont like riding, fine , just dont. but dont lecture me on endangering my familys welfare because i do. look around next time your out and about. probably 75% of the people you see riding motorcycles are gray haired old coots like us. most of them even have both legs ;) dont know what some of you would do up here if you had to drive to work in a snow storm or drive the roads up here that are ice covered at least 2 months a year, MUCH more dangerous to drive your car on than riding your motorcycle on the same road in the summer. yet 80 year old women do that every day.

only family financially tied to me anymore is my wife. shed be better off for money if i died. taking care of someone injured? shes been doing that for 40 years and through 13 of my 21 surgerys. she knew that when she signed up. here it is. i MIGHT have 10 more years. maybe a few more than that not capable of really living.

I do. So who is putting their family in danger?  make you a deal i wont lecture you on that steak or buger your throwing on the grill today if you dont lecture me on riding my bike to town to see the parade before i throw steaks on the grill. heck im lucky if i see tommarow after this risky 4th ;D.
cant hide from death. you were dying the day you were born and God knew the exact date before your ma even got pregnant. you cant change it or stop it by changing your life.

Being responsible about those that rely on you is not letting fear control your life.  I've been prone to that "bullet proof" thinking over the years, but sometimes you need to think about others.

I'm done.

nothing wrong with horses. i love riding them but they too can be dangerous for someone unskilled (something i freely admit) like me. but im sure as hell going to hop on one and ride when i want and im not wearing a riding helmet and pads like some yuppy afraid they might get a boo boo. matter of fact riding a horse is as close to the feeling of riding a bike i can think of. to be honest dee im sure not hard core anymore. just short of 2k last summer and i did that in a week in my younger days. bought this one new in 2016 and it only has 23k on it. but unlike a horse i can let it sit for 2 weeks and toss some gas in it and go for a little ride, get home and leave it in the garage for 2 more. horses are alot of work. heck ive had a dog most of my life and told the wife the one i have now is my last. cant do anything or go anywhere without being tied down. I can get my horse fix at the buddies, he has 3 and when i park them they do the maintenance. probably why many farmers and ranchers use more atv's than horses these days. but those darned atvs can be dangerous too ;) people killed on them every day. id bet up here more are killed on atv's and snowmobiles by a long shot than on motorcycles :o guess i should sell them too and get me a mobility scooter!!!!!!!!!!

Yep 95 percent of your posts are pure B.S. and I didn't mention your name. You must have a guilty complex along with your other wondrous b.s. for what you stand for.
