Dangerous wind chills, freezing temperatures, winter storms to hit US
Some areas with sub-zero temperatures and light wind could feel as low as -50 degrees
By Julia Musto | Fox News

Fox News Flash top headlines for February 10
Bitter cold and dangerous winter storms are set to freeze much of the U.S. once again this week, as two storm systems and a polar vortex churn eastward.

As the first system soaks the Mississippi Valley, the National Weather Service predicted Wednesday that a stagnant front across the Tennessee Valley and Southern Plains and a cold high-pressure system would collide, leading to ice storms ranging from Arkansas to Kentucky.

POLAR VORTEX BRINGING 'BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES,' WIND CHILLS TO MUCH OF US

They reported that precipitation is expected to last through Thursday and that ice accumulation could surpass a quarter of an inch from the Ozark Mountains to eastern Kentucky.

In some areas, they said, ice could exceed half of an inch -- leading to hazardous travel conditions, felled trees and power outages.

To the northeast, a dusting of snow will fall from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic through the end of the week.

While western Maryland and West Virginia may see snowfall totals of approximately 6-12 inches, northern Virginia, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and other parts of Maryland will likely only get around three to 6 inches.

The Southeast and southern Appalachians will also get some precipitation, with showers and thunderstorms bringing 1-2 inches of rain and possible isolated flooding through Friday.

Frigid temperatures are forecast to expand over the next few days with temperatures 20-40 degrees below average extending from the Great Plains to the Great Lakes.

By the weekend, the chill could reach toward the Gulf Coast and the Lower Mississippi Valley, and wind chill advisories and warnings remain in place from Montana through Michigan where wind and sub-zero temperatures could make certain spots feel like -50 degrees.

Temperatures will also dip in the central U.S. and Pacific Northwest, where a low-pressure system mixing with cold air could lead to heavy snow both in the mountains and lowlands.

Winter storm watches have been posted in both Oregon and Washington.

That is a crock of feces and more and more people are falling for this bs.
It probably works well for politicians to scare voters and gain more power but is DOES NOT EXIST.
Look up on line why it was drastically reduce decades back and why a large number of weather experts wanted to get rid of it, entirely.

I have been in -40 dead air temp. often, and when I was up at Bemidji , -50 dead air temp.
If you  have ever been in real -30, -40 or -50 temp. you will realize how big of a scam this is.

BOB. It's 24 deg here with sleet and freezing rain. Yard and roads  like a sheet of glass. A whole lot more ice coming. Nothing fake about that.
Years ago we had an ice storm on top of a good snow. Our electric and phone lines were laying in our yard. Patty's cell phone btty was of course DEAD.  I fell hard 3X on the ice getting to the car. I broke 2 and 1/4 inches of ice off the car but FINALLY got the door open.

I plugged it up to  the charger. Only fell 2X getting back to the house. After an hour or so I went to get the phone, again falling a couple times coming and going, whew, NOW she has a phone. THEN we heard on our btty operated radio that almost all cell towers were down, not working. We were out of power 8 days and nights. Some parts of KY didn't get power back for several months due to the thousands of elect poles being broken. A guy from the power co said in some areas the ice on the base of poles was 2 ft thick. Might talk to you later, might not.  :D :D

IF power goes out like it did before, I'm in big trouble without the oxygen machine. I have a big bttl that is supposed to las 24 hrs, but doubt it would and 5 bttls that I know can last 5-6 hrs + a few little ones at 1 hr apiece. So far so good. I can see the ice on the tree branches now. CHARLIE.  ;D

Call it a crock if you wish but where I an in Oklahoma we woke this morning to 19 degrees a thin lair of ice on all roads and most every thing is iced in, I have been in a number of what they call Blue northerner storms here in Oklahoma and we are looking at between 10 and 15 inches of snow for the weekend on top of all the ice we already have, hate to see my gas bill for this month. If we do loose power I have 2 generators that I can use to power the house.

When the wind blows and it is cold outside it makes it colder. Don't take a brain surgeon to figure that out.

To be technical, the wind evaporates moisture from uncovered skin, or anything it is on, that physical action removes heat, cools it, or in the case of a an old leather containers used to hold liquid, wet it, blow on it , cool it; it has ZERO EFFECT on anything that doe not have liquid water on it (Well you could dump alcohol on yourself to feel the chill quicker.
Have you not ever wondered why a dry wind blowing on a dry thermometer will not cause it to read lower; or why a car with anti-freeze good to -30 that is not running but facing a 30 mph wind does not freeze up?
If there were such a thing as wind-chill that car would be frozen solid as at the wind-chill scam says that is equivalent to -53, does not take much though to realize something does not calculate as far as this wind-chill scam goes.

Now it you are dumb enough to go out wet and naked, it will feel cool quicker but at 0 you will die no quicker than if you were sitting in a chair at 0 on a still air day because you are freezing in 0 air, nothing colder, without exceptions, though the extremities will suffer quicker as your body shuts of heat to them first.
Ignorance is bliss for supposed authorities who love to use such old wives tales to scare the crap out of the ignorant, and take advantage of that.

I have been in the sub-zero and when you walk outside you will know, if you are not a newbie, how different -20 feels from -30 from -40; at around -40 the air, still air, bites at you, if you are dressed properly you body will expel the large amount of heat your clothing is holding in out through the exposed parts of you skin so it will not freeze, so it is best to have areas where the heat can escape as newbies up here working in that cold get hot and start removing clothing which screws them up quickly .
15 years ago, my friends and my self would have fire going in winter and sit outside an bs up to 2 in the morning.  On more than one occasion we did so a 0 degres, plus or minus a couple.
One night I had a big fire, and was sitting on a lawn chair with hay bales behind me still there from a Halloween decoration.
The fire was hot, so I wore clothing that did not fit the weather.
When we all went out own ways, I walked into the house sat down with the wall furnace blowing and started to shiver. The fire  warm to my front skin and clothing but the rest of my body was suffering the signs of approaching hypothermia.
When the artificial heat source was gone, my body could not supply heat fast enough to replace it.
I had that happen twice and then learned my lesson, when it is that cold you where clothes that will keep you warm enough without an external heat source.

You do not have be a brain surgeon read tech. articles that debunk old myths.

Still freezing rain here and 22 deg, pine tree limbs are really sagging, likely have several on the ground tomorrow.  County has 6 trucks out salting. Our roads are all priorities, with number 5 the lowest, our rds are a priority 4.  Hoping for the best. I do not want to leave home because of oxygen.

BOB, I did not read that long post but YES there is a wind chill factor. Standing outside in 20 deg with a 30 mph wind would be darn cold. Standing in the same spot, same temp, but no wind would not seem near as cold. RIGHT?? CHARLIE.  :D :D

Too funny, sounds like someone has in fact to much antifreeze going for them. I guess the wind is a mirage when you get a burst of it and shiver down to your bones.

Only if you are standing out there without proper clothing.
I blow/shoveled snow in strong winds and the wind does not bother me unless I turn into the wind and it blows snow in my face.
I have blown/shoveled snow in double digit sub-zero weather and come in with wet clothes and ice/snow caked on my head and face but feel hot, not cold.
Your shirt gets wet under your coat, one reason wearing wool clothes is  important up hear as it does not get soggy like cotton.
Some people pee and moan about the temp. because they are wearing clothes for 60 degrees in 45 degree weather, wind has nothing to do with it.

We have continuous sub-zero weather right now and I can feel the difference in temp., on my face from eight in the morning to high of day but I am no colder at eight than I am at the warm point of the day because I usually go outside with winter clothes on.

When i get the mail or newspaper yes I get chilly quickly because I often do not have on a jacket or shoes.

If you come up here and expose skin to this weather, you are as dumb as the broad with the Gorilla Glue.
At least I now know why lousy people get elected, naive people believe what they are told as the old saying goes, a sucker is born every minute.

https://www.vox.com/2016/1/19/10788306/wind-chill-meaning

Wind chill is a terrible, misleading metric. So why do we still use it?

Those are very particular conditions, and they don't really describe our full range of experiences outside. So, more often than not, wind chill dramatically exaggerates the cold we actually feel.

This is not a secret. Many people have pointed this out over the years. In 2007, Slate's Daniel Engber suggested that "rather than trying to patch up wind chill's inconsistencies, we should just dump it altogether."...

So what accounts for its limited use  ...   because the NWS always publishes it, it's the easiest metric for broadcasters to use.
Technically, there's nothing stopping them from developing their own "feels like" weather metrics, the way Weather Underground does. But doing so takes more work, partly because those metrics are based on numbers — like sunlight and humidity — that vary widely over the course of the day and a person's precise location. "The more variables you put in, the harder it is for people to utilize," notes Bluestein... .

You should see what it's like where I come from. And I can say, Iceland wasnt as bad as I've seen right here in NM. Civilian on board said its because of the North Atlantic current.

Read reviews on vox.com. Not good. I had to update my reply. I understand what is meant by the temperature staying the same regardless if it's still outside or the wind is blowing. Point taken. But growing up and till this day I associate windy outside conditions colder (to Me) anyway. Maybe i need to be politically correct and say feels like. With all the crazy stuff going on seems pretty petty to argue about something so trivial as cold wind regardless what you call it. One reason i still live in Arizona. Like i said it gets hotter than he!! here but no minus 30 with REALLY WINDY CONDITIONS.

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN

Fact or Fiction?: Wind Chill Is Real
The winter breeze certainly feels cold, but your skin may not be as frigid as you think

By Mark Fischetti on January 29, 2014
The infamous polar vortex has put the U.S. and Canada in a deep freeze several times already this winter. Alarmed weather forecasters are now routinely displaying big maps that show the extremely low wind chill values: –34 degrees Fahrenheit in Minneapolis, –36 degrees F in Chicago, –39 degrees F in Fargo, N.D., last night alone. But if the air temperature is, say, 15 degrees F, and a 20–mile per hour wind makes the wind chill –2 degrees F, would the temperature of your exposed skin drop to that temperature?

No. Your skin temperature cannot drop below the actual air temperature. The coldest your uncovered face could get would be 15 degrees F whether the wind is calm or howling at 40 mph.

So what’s the point of wind chill, then? Should we worry about it? Is it deceiving?

Wind chill is a mathematically derived number that approximates how cold your skin feels—not how cold your skin actually is. Thanks to blood in your skin and underlying tissue, your body constantly radiates heat, generating a thin boundary layer of warm air on the surface your skin that helps insulate you from the cold. If you stand still in air that is 20 degrees F and there is no wind, your skin will be warmer than 20 degrees F. Wind carries some of that heat away, however, and the faster the wind, the faster the heat loss. Once the wind surpasses 25 mph or so, it whisks away heat more quickly than your body can emit it, leaving your skin exposed to the full low temperature.

Your nerve endings and brain perceive the rapid drop in skin temperature as extreme, however. Scientists are not sure why this occurs, but they think it is a signal to close down blood vessels in the skin and extremities so more blood can flow to the body’s core, to keep your organs warm and keep you alive—even if you lose a finger or toe to frostbite in the process. Wind chill is all about perception, and the wind chill index is an attempt to gauge that perception.

Different wind chill indexes use different formulas, but in all of them the most important factors are air temperature and wind speed, says Catherine O’Brien, a research physiologist at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Mass. The National Weather Service wind chill chart uses only those two quantities, and runs them through a model based on the tissue in a prototypical human face as well as rates of heat loss for the body. AccuWeather’s “RealFeel” index adds in effects such as cloud cover and sun angle, but because the formula is patent-protected outside scientists cannot evaluate the math.

If wind chill is not the actual temperature on your skin, why bother reporting it? This is a fair question. Some meteorologists say it would be more useful to report “minutes until frostbite” rather than wind chill values. If viewers know how quickly their exposed skin will freeze, they might be more cautious. And yet, frostbite times don’t provide very useful clues about how much clothing to wear.

The wind chill charts do show generally how long it will take skin to freeze at lower and lower values. For example, a temperature of 0 degree F and a wind of 20 mph creates wind chill of –22 degrees F and skin can freeze in 30 minutes. If the wind rises to 55 mph, the wind chill drops to –32 degrees F, and skin can freeze in 10 minutes. Remember, the only reason skin freezes faster at lower wind chill is because the body’s heat envelope is removed more quickly. Skin doesn’t freeze until its temperature is well below 32 degrees F, because its cells contain salts and other compounds that lower its freezing point below that of water. Exact times vary depending on an individual’s blood flow, fat layers and underlying tissue.

Still don’t believe wind chill temperatures aren’t real? Try an experiment: Put two thermometers outside, one in the wind and one shielded from it. When you return they will read the same. Or just ask yourself a simple question: If you are driving your car at 20 mph and you read the dashboard thermometer, then speed up to 60 mph, does the temperature drop? No. Because the air temperature has not changed. There is no wind chill for your car—even if you have given your vehicle a human name.

Realizing that coldness is all about perception raises other interesting observations. People who have a lot of body fat may actually feel colder than those who do not, despite the notion that fat acts as insulation. More fat under the skin can actually prevent heat, generated in underlying muscles, from reaching the skin, O’Brien says. Because the perception of cold comes mostly from nerves in the skin, as the air temperature drops, people with high body fat might feel colder.

Women may often feel colder than men because they tend to have less muscle mass (less heat generated) and more body fat (blocking heat to the skin), and because their generally smaller size gives them a larger ratio of surface area to mass they tend to lose heat faster. Every person is different, of course.

Whether or not wind chill is a useful number, meteorologists on television and radio are running wild with it. After all, reporting wind chills of –36 and –39 sounds more dramatic than temperatures of 0 and a paltry –2. “It’s getting a little ridiculous now,” O’Brien says. “Sometimes it’s hard to find the actual air temperature.”

That is the way it is up here now with all the import talking heads from South of here.
Fifty years ago it was rarely mentioned and poo-pood when they did.

Ok guys. No more talking about wind chill factors, its upsettin Bob. Besides, everybody knows that cold wind does not remove body heat from the skin faster than no wind. It's a myth.
People and cars are exactly alike. Antifreeze equates to blood, and chrome equates to TOOTH ENAMEL!!! 8)

If you come up here and expose skin to this weather, you are as dumb as the broad with the Gorilla Glue.
At least I now know why lousy people get elected, naive people believe what they are told as the old saying goes, a sucker is born every minute.

LMAO!!!
Sunday its supposed to be -14 degrees with 3 to 5 inches of snow. But that's not as cold as it is at Bobs house.
Bob goes outside without his coat or shoes. Bob dont care. Hes Bob.

Now I don't know what gorilla glue, and lousy people getting elected have  to do with this wind chill discussion, but I do know that Bob is still standin out there in left field because nobody told him the game was called off because of the wind chill factor. So I guess the sucker born every minute part is true.
