condor kephart
« on: March 05, 2013, 06:48:09 PM »
has anyone here handled or laid
eyes on one of these kephart knives?
i was asked about one and i couldn't
answer as to whether or not it was
flat ground, or if it was an "illusion"
flat grind like the hudson bay knife.

I've been keeping a check at knifecenter for one and then don't have them in stock yet...

Ive been eying the Nessmuk and Kep too, and wish (hope) they will do a DeWeese pattern too; then I'd probably buy all three just because they look to be solid users. For that matter, to put a little clip point on the Kep would make it a tolerable 'almost a DeWeese', which I surely favor over a Kep after trying my own homemade version. It probably wont matter if the are not quite a flat grind for general use if the steel will hold a decent edge. Kudos to them for making patterns at an entry level that nobody else has seen fit to do.

the flat grind or no is what i
was wondering about. in their
illustrations, it looks exactly like
a flat grind as does their photos
of their hudson bay. well. .upon
handling a hudson bay there are
lines forged in at the handle/blade
juncture that give the appearance
of a flat grind, when in fact it is
a very steep sabre grind. to me,
that's almost useless. if the grind
was even halfway up the blade
width, it would be a better edge
than supplied from the factory.
i could buy a quality german-made
e. christopher blade and put one
together, but if condor offered a
ready made something that was
close for the price, i thought
that might be the route. i've
always been better served by
the flat ground knives i've
used and owned.

They must be too cheap for anybody here to try out, and Ive got way too many sittin' in the big box next to me here.......saw a you tube vid on the Nessmuk last week, maybe you can find it. The grind should be the same and maybe you can get a better idea.
