it seams that most people are saying that for white tails its better to use a cast round going semi fast than a jacketed hollow point going fast?
if im reading in to this wrong please let me know cause if i am im looking in to useing one of these this year the wrong way

i was thinking of going with ether a 158 or 180 xtp hollowpoint an iwas going to load them a little shy of max
so am i wrong for thinking this way?
once again this is the first time i will be useing a 357 for deer

I loaded up 250 rounds of Hornady 158 gr. XTP for my .357 to use on deer. I don't know how cast bullets work on game but I want my bullets to mushroom. All the cast bullets I ever used were on the range except for a few deer that I dispatched after being hit by cars or whatever. These are the only game I ever shot with a cast bullet(SWC) and they never mushroomed. As you can imagine the range was always short(feet not yards). Based on this I can not recommend a cast bullet. Small groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

I remember reading a post from a cowboy that said he wore his .357 vaquero every day. The bluing was just about all gone and he said that he had killed more deer and black bear with it than he could remember.

The smallest caliber I have ever killed deer with is the .41 Mag. However, my hunting buddy wanted me to load some deer loads for him. I read up on it and weighed all the factors including readily available bullets. I settled on Hornady 180 HP/XTP's over 9.2 of Blue Dot.

He has killed three deer in the last two years and they all went down either instantly or within sight. The furtherest was about 65 yards.

I do not doubt at all that a big cast bullet would also work fine. I have killed several with my .41 Mag Blackhawk with a cast 210 bullet with good results.
Based on my friends results with his 357 and two deer I killed I have started loading the Hornady HP/XTP 210 for my three .41 Mags (Contender,Redhawk,Blackhawk)

My dad used my duty revolver, S&W model 19 4-in., on a whitetail doe last season using factory Remington 158gr. SWC. Double lung hit. Deer fell dead at around 50 yds or so.

Been doing good, Mikey. Kids are getting big and getting into everything. Just been busy over the last year or so with the good ol' "Life Changes". Didn't really deer hunt last year but one day. Everything appears to be getting back to normal now. How things up your way?

Mohawk - Good to hear (actually, read) it. Normal is OK. Up here things are slowin' down quite a bit. I walked out of the office last Thursday for two weeks of vacation before retirement. I'm off the payroll as of 6/30 with over 30 years otj. Finally sat down a figured it out - been working steady since I was 16, that's 42 continual years and this is my first summer vacation in all that time. So, what did I do yesterday - busted up my kidneys, back and knees riding this old tractor pulling a mower deck for 6 hours in the sun and in addition to my aches and pains, got sunburned. Ya know, sometimes ya jes gotta stand back and laugh at yourself. It doesn't make anything feel better but it gives me a bit of a pice of mind.

However, there is this Crow that is yakin' outside my window, so ifin ya'll doan mind, I'm gonna excuse myself fer a bit and see if I kin make some feathers fly. Mikey.....

I have hunted with a .357 mag. every since I bought my Dan Wesson in 1981. It is a very versatile cartridge in my opinion. I have friends who hunt with larger Calibers, and they seem to be no more successful than I am. Bare in mind that I have hunted nothing larger than Whitetail with it!
I have larger caliber handguns for bigger/tougher game, but I still
always migrate to my .357 mag for Whitetail. I do not use any of the fancy jacketed hollowpoints either. My Whitetail Bullet is a 158 gr. medium hard cast Semi-Wadcutter at about 1300 fps. I have never had to trail a deer over about 50 yards with this gun cartridge combo.
I would not hesitate in shooting any WhiteTail Georgia has to offer inside
of about 75 yards with this gun. I am not recommending a .357 for
just everyone, but I shoot this particular gun a lot and am quite comfortable with it.

Yep, I agree. I think the SWC loadings of the .357 have been underrated since the advent of the JHP's. For duty I load my model 19 Nickel S&W with .38 +p Lead HP load because they do a good job and easier to shoot in high stress but also carry a speedloader of Magnum SWC. I mentioned my father had harvested a whitetail doe last season using standard 158 gr. SWC and he seemed very confident they would work. They were the standard highway patrol load for years so he knew of their capabilities. This man actually TURNED DOWN :eek: my offering of other jhp loads and gave me a look like I was silly. He gladly loading the swc's and had a deer in an hour or so.
