Fed Ex delivered yesterday!
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:33:37 AM »
Fed Ex delivered late yesterday. I found an invoice that told me my 5-33 rd 9mm Glock magazines were on back order as were my 2-100 rd Surefire 5.56 AR15 magazines. What did arrive were 3-60 rd 5.56 AR15 magazines! I sat at the computer loading one 60 rd magazine. The last round loaded took no more effort than the first. A tad heavy but it is 2:1 over the standard 30 rd magazine. It is very popular in 3-gun competition.

I may enter the Mystery Mountain 3 gun next year. Although physically debilitated I shoot straight and it is amazing how poorly some competitors shoot. They act like it is combat and spray rounds down range. While this may keep the bad guys heads down it plays hob with your score! The best single target score is 2-A zone hits worth 5 pts each. A miss is -10 pts. 2 misses = -20 and you also lost the +10 pts you could have had so you wind up losing 30 pts. Slow down and shoot straight.

I do not own a 9mmP Glock. If another AWB goes through with the attendant 'hi capacity magazine' ban they will wind up buying me quite a bit of 5.56 ammunition.

A Carbine Conversion Unit by Mech Tec with a cheap Glock 17 lower and a 33 rd mag would make up a 'po-folks' MP5.

Over Thanksgiving I spoke with a young man who was headed for Afghanistan for his 3rd tour. He volunteered. His job was SAW gunner. I asked his opinion of the IAR (Individual Automatic Rifle) that is replacing many of the M249s. He was all for it. The IAR or M27 is 9.1# lighter than the M249 SAW. Anything to make the grunts load lighter. If the Surefire 100rd magazine is used instead of the Beta Mag that will save another 1.67# PER MAGAZINE. With the standard 800rd load that saves another 16.7#. So you get 25.8# lighter load. In reality it will probably mean another 800rd of ammo!

I will keep him in my prayers.

Slow down and shoot straight.

This is the hardest thing to teach and to the point of near impossibility with someone who thinks they already know how to shoot.  The best student I believe I've ever had is my 7 year old granddaughter.  I've taught her since the beginning to make every shot count and to never be satisfied with just getting close.  This coupled with some natural ability and a desire to shoot better than Pap has her developing into a fantastic shooter and the carryover has an effect on her school studies also.  Patients accentuates quality.

I have had private/semi-private lessons with 2 of the greatest USPSA/IPSC shooters the world has ever seen. Each said they prefer to teach women. Women know they do not know how to shoot. Men have 2 problems with shooting.  They think they know how to shoot because they have watched every John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movie ever made and testosterone. Machismo is alive and well in shooters. I mean, pistol shooting is just another p***ing contest. But not so wet. :P

Again I have no argument although I would add kids into the mix.  I had a couple teenage boys walk across the field out of curiosity while I was shooting one day 3 years ago.  They were 15 and I think 17 at the time and had no experience at all.  I gave them a little trigger time and discovered they were like sponges at absorbing knowledge and they quickly developed skills.  Early this summer they brought Dad along and he is now learning from them but it takes him a bit longer to catch on.

It's as though women and kids have nothing to prove.  Personally I have nothing to prove to anyone other than my enemies.  That's why I no longer shoot in competition.  It's also amazing what an old guy can pick up by trying to help young folks learn.

Good luck on 3 gun.  I'll be watching to see how you do.

as you said, women and kids have nothing to prove. They (we) just want to learn. Kids ARE sponges and as long as we pour in the right stuff along with a touch of love it is amazing what they can do.

delivery from Brownells today.  NO AR15 stuff. All for 1911s. I guess I went window shopping too much?

Oops, I misspoke. I did get 3 more Surefire 60rd magazines. I managed to double order them. Two different orders.  Now I have six 60s. I also got Brownells 1911 and AR15 catalogs.  The Surefire 60s are going up to $129.00 and the 100s to $179.00.  I sent an email asking how long the online price for the 60s would be honored. We shall see. They are no longer accepting backorders for the 100s. I wonder if my backorder for 2-100s will be honored.  I am magazine overly rich.

I can't imagine a use for any of those mags.  I trust nothing but pmags in the AR.  Glock standard highcaps won't quit on you when the chips are down.

The same reason all of our servicemen and women use pmags.  They work.

I think I mentioned it in another thread, but I use the 20 rounders a lot.  They're perfect for coyote hunting.  I would like to try my hand at IPSC/3 gun style shooting, sometime.  It would definitely be a change from backyard plinking and harassing varmints.  I find it strange that testosterone and/or machismo are so problematic in shooting sports - especially when the scores are posted.  I think my biggest problem with learning something new is trying to un-learn all the bad habits I've already picked up.  Unfortunately, I don't know of any shooting ranges nearby that offer instruction.  Whats worse is, if Illinois politicians get their way, they'll regulate shooting ranges out of business.  They even have their own Feinstein style AWB ready to roll out, just in case Obama doesn't sign one they like.  I guess we'll see how things shake out.

I like the 20 rounders myself.  They allow you to shoot prone.

cj, I too use 20s most of the time. They are just more convenient, especially when shooting off the bench. However, I prefer to have some with more capacity for such things as zombie hordes or other such emergencies that go by initials or a robins egg shade of blue.

I use 20 rounder most of the time also. Anything longer than that will hit off a bench rest.
I did pick up two 42 round Promags last week for $17. Good trade material

Not really just normal price before the rush. Looks like they have had them a while. I am guessing Florida Gun Exchange has sold out of everything now. They had about 6 on the rack but was out of all their 20 rounders. They also had lower receivers on the wall for $179, not great just a little high before the rush. If I order in one I have to pay the transfer so it is about a was here in FL. I was spoiled in Lexington Buds wil transfer for free if you have a range membership.
I did not see any gouging but their prices are a little on the high side compared to Buds gun shop in Lexington.

But I dropped by AAA gun and pawn in Deland FL and drooled over a M1A but they only had it in plastic and I was wanting wood for $1695. Came back on Monday to look again and they had raised the price to $1995. I under supply and demand but they can keep it or sell it to someone else.  They have over 7000 guns in stock most used so I am sure they did have time to mark up them all  ;D .  They also had a MNI 14 Stainless for $625 they did not have marked up yet.

I'd sell them for the going rate.  They are ok until damaged.

I actually thought about selling a few of my old aluminum mags during the last panic buying frenzy. I figured I could sell a few at the inflated price, wait for things to calm down, and pick up some new ones at the regular price. I never got around to it, of course. I'm really not so inclined to do it this time, since it looks like we might actually have problems replacing them in the future. I did stock up on spring and follower replacement kits a while back, so I should be able to get a few more miles out of em...

today it was UPS delivering.  Precision Reflex Inc supplied a carbon fiber forearm in dark earth, a top rib in black, 4" black 1913 rail and a 3" dark earth 1913 rail.  Now I need the complete Vltor heavy upper receiver and Les Baer complete bolt and carrier assembly. Then off to Kreiger for one of their barrels and full assembly. I am still waiting for the Command Arms sniper stock but I can start with the lower I already have.

UPS again today. Hornady .223 75gr AMAX, 1200 of them. I ordered them before I found out they could not be loaded to magazine length for an AR15. Guess I better do a lot of shooting beyond 500 yds.
