Well, the .45 Colt Carbine let me down...
« on: November 19, 2012, 03:25:43 PM »
Well at least it's sights did.  Never been really fond of the semi-buckhorns, but now even less so.  Apparently, something bumped them and they were pushed over in the dove tail about 1/4".  Enough to almost cost me a 6 point, but luckily I had my .45 Colt Blackhawk and took him with that.  Thinking it's time for a new rear sight!  Was kind of cool to get my first handgun kill too though.  ;)  Pretty neat seeing a nickel size hole right through the heart.  240 gr. Sierra Sportmaster really did a number on him with 10 gr. Unique.

Congrats on a nice deer, it's nice when a plan comes together.

Nice job.

That is the only way I will get to use my Contender 14"(if my handi has an issue) I just cant seem to only take the TC. So when the moment comes I am usually grabbing the long gun.

Good job!!

I once shot a deer, walked up to it to locate position. Left to get cart and leave pack, rifle extra cloths.. as I returned the deer jumped up and ran!!!  I pulled my pistol, and dropped him at the shot... TO MUCH!!

Good job on the 6 PT, good looking deer! Congrats on the first Handgun kill!!!

Nice going tack.

Brian, that is exactly why I ALWAYS put a .357 behind their ear no matter how dead they appear to be. ;)

Nicely done !

Looking for a new sight? Look at Marbles Bullseye sight, mine works great !
It doesn't disrupt the looks of my 45 Carbine, and works like a peep sight.

Seems staking the site in place would hold it properly after its sight in session. Around these parts you better have the speed of Bob Munden if you want to follow up with a pistol shot.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen so many dumb deer as this year.  Just standing still and letting us shoot 2, 3 even 4 shots before moving in some cases.  My brother had a similar issue with unfamiliar slugs in his 870 on the 3rd day of the season and shot 5 times at 100 yards, never connecting.  The deer just stood there...  Usually, if you touch a leaf, they are tail up and running.

The Williams peep sight would be a nice one for the Colt Carbine.

Actually, I've pretty much settled on the skinner rear sight.  I'm also going to try out one of the Merit #4 hunting adjustable aperatures instead of carrying multiples.  I will probably end up with the plain blued, but was looking at the black gold version too.  It's blingy, but looks cool on the right guns.  8)

Loctite Blackmax 380, that's what it's made for.... and it's black, good stuff to have around, just about used mine up, got to get some more before I need it again.  ;)

Did the buck travel far after the shot? I shot a 150lb hog with my Ruger 45LC using a Hornady 240gr or 250gr XTP bullet and Ruger only load of H110. It penetrated both sides and kept going even after punching through the opposite side leg bone at 35 yards. I think they were the Mag bullets as they didn't expand much. The hog ran about 30 yards and piled up. I can remember thinking what do I need a 454 Casull Ruger for unless I'm shooting them 3 at a time.
God created man, Col. Colt made him equal.

He went 3 jumps and I put another bullet through his left rear leg as he went over the top of the hill I was by.  He only made it 2 jumps further and was laying on the other side when I got to the top.  8)

Good job, Tack ! you turned bad luck into a victory - way to go !

I don't know how old you are, but at my age (barely still in my fifties) iron sights are really hard to use. My only long guns that still have them are my Marlin 1895G and 1894P; and what they have is Williams peep sights with Firesights (fiber optics) front sights.

I always carry a backup revolver when hunting, too.
