My thinking when I'm on the water is what ever I take with me may not make it home unless it floats.

That's what floating gun cases are for.  ;D

I've got to think that the little .45 Colt/.410 Survivor would be right up there.  Dual ammo and ability to take down big game or use bird shot for snakes and buckshot for 2 footed varmints.  Seems like a perfect fit.  ;)

I carry my single shot Turkey in a floating case with a variety of shells, buckshot, slugs and some number sixes.  Never know what will come along out in the boonies.  Two choke tubes, a modified and extra I take with also.   I have at times added a handgun to the mix, all depending on where I'm going.

Last year I was sitting on a log in a hardwood swamp with my 20 ga. H&R across my lap and got to thinkin. The old mountain men carried trade guns, most in 62 cal, or about 20 ga. they could load swan shot for birds or round ball for bigger game. He I sat with the same thing and I could swap back and forth with a flick o' the wrist. Buckshot for walkin thru the bush. Slugs for sittin still for a while and some #6 shot if a tree rat should get too noisy. Seemed like to  me I had all the bases covered.

There you go Rusty.  Just rig a 6 ft cord to connect to one of the sling pins or through the trigger guard if you don't have one.  Hook the other end to the boat and you have a great canoe gun.

Pick the caliber or gauge for the game you are after, or a suitable load in whatever you have. By the ol'time standards the factory H&R is a 'shorty' already; but no flamin' toward you who have cut yours down  ;) . The ol' trade gun idea still works today as well as ever, even if we use suppository loaders.
I learned a good while back that if Im gonna be on the water I better plan on gettin' wet........counts for my gear too  :P .

when i  was younger....[read poorer with fewer choices]

i had an old  beat up 12 double...snakes i guess was the main concern....and bears

last time out  i took my  357 shorty..........[sssssss  it was a rossi]
it has a red-dot ,,,
bicycle inner tube over the fore-arm has 2 shot shells and two 38s[quiet]
and 6 357 in speed strip  in my pocket......as always to feed pocket gun or rifle

before   concealed carry days...... and  i was young
my 22 ruger single six[seainless]  always went in the tackle box....fishing or not
then  i searched for something BIGGER and STAINLESS
didn't like it but the price was right......now  one of my favorite guns...357 black hawk

i keep small  cord to tie a gun to life jacket or boat

When I was about 10, I had a canvas skinned 2 man kayak.  My kayak gun was my Daisy Red Ryder ::)   Had to take it along.  One never knew when you could be attacked by a rabid frog :o

i like the way your thinking
i generally think  of the 12  as the  ''do all''  round
recoil can be more of an issue in a small  boat ...possibly giving the 20 the edge
i had  my double......double fire once...almost put us in the river  WITH THE SNAKE
SAFETY  FIRST........... another  big plus for the  simple single shot

even  with out a double  fire...might  loose  balance after the shot
fire the second  as you  fall......does anything  need shooting with a fallow up shot  THAT bad

I wonder how many millions of Red Ryders were made.  Growing up, I didn't know a kid without one.  I think my buddy has some new ones in his store with the "signed" wood stock of yesteryear.

Pete, I'm not saying that your Red Ryder was inadiquate, but what would you have done had it been one of those thick hided bullfrogs that are hard to drop with even a pellet gun :o   Well, at least you would have had plenty of follow up shots ;)

:-X I'm surprised that you ever had anything to do with a lever action, but I won't tell :-X

  • A top break Lemat style revolver in .22 LR with a .45 long colt/.410 barrel 3" long.  I think it would be a nice tackel box gun.

I guess for production work: a punt gun

For fun: my Savage 24 .22/20Ga.  This was my first gun. It's perfect at nothing but real good for alot.  A string tied rear sling swivel keeps it from being lost. Buddy says it's the best anchor he's seen but he's jealous.  I have a Nylon 66 that I have taken along when we had alot of portages and some backpacking planned.
