best canoe gun??????
« on: November 12, 2012, 06:40:52 AM »
i hear about ''truck gun''  and  ''trail guns''  and ''woods loafing guns''  ''tractor guns''
got  any to add....fill in the blank....''________ gun''  on this thread

HOW ABOUT A ''CANOE GUN''??

basically any small boat gun
i will more likely be in a kayak
but  also  for those that prefer a jon boat

this  is a handi site........but  if you prefer something  else..
you must also include a handi choice
as  i will ALWAYS have  my 357 revolver with me any time ant place

so therefor  one of my 357 handis  is one of my main choices

if you like to plink on the water  a lot...then  i assume you to pick a 22
shot gun  if snakes are your main concern
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs
DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO STOP A DEMOCRAT
OBAMACARE....the biggest tax hike in the  history of mankind
free choice and equality  can't co-exist
AFTER THE LIBYAN COVER-UP... remind any  democrat voters ''they sat and  watched them die''...they  told help to ''stand down''

Depends on what you plan on shootin. I sold both my canoes and got a small jon boat. I don't think I "myself" would take a rifle in a kayak. I probably won't get in one ;D  Seem too unstable for me.
I usually take a Ruger 20" 22 Hornet if after groundhogs. Now I have Handi Superlites in Hornet and 223 that will get to go next. For squirrel I've used my Rem 541-T, Rem 597 camo, and a few years ago my Handi Sportster 22 r.f. that took a red squirrel off a limb at a fur distance while floating down river. Told my buddy to watch this big tree, he wondered why, at the shot the red squirrel fell. He said "How'd you even see that". Have used 10" Contender in Hornet when it had a red dot on it. Hard to get on a running groundhog with that. Usually have a Mossburg 410 3" #4s as backup in case the squirrel gets lucky enough to run ;)  Wish I was on the river right now ;)
So, Jon Boat Gun!

When you say canoe gun it swings my memories to Blackpowder camping and a 20 ga flintlock tulle.  But This summer on our canoe trips I had a 20 ga pardner along. (since you will have the revolver) If not the 20 ga, maybe the .357 maximum  with everything from .38 Trail boss- wad cutters to a stout deer  maxi load...  thejanitor

Tim, sorry, I am ignorant about them. I've seen people roll over, meaning head under water and come back up, not for me ;D  My buddy went out in his last year for Geese and when he shot his 12 ga, it rolled him over. Said there was no resistance on the off shot side. Again not for me ::)  I do know people that love them. I got too lazy to use a paddle much anymore. Usually spend the whole day on the river and motor up to the next town and float back down in stealth mode. Arms wouldn't be able to lift gun.
gendoc, it's just an air boat without the airplane engine ;D  It's the little one in the foreground. I got the one behind it as I can't sit for long periods of time. Helps to walk around at times. I think I've only had my 45 auto and 12 ga shorty as: Pontoon Gun. Hope to change that next summer ;)

Sounds like he needs a little help or more experience!  ;D I've not hunted from mine, others do tho, but I've fished with no problems, love my Old Town Dirigo 120 Angler.  :)

The only "canoe gun" I've had experience with was my .62 cal Tradegun flinter.  :)

Purpose?  Just grab one... 20ga shorty probably adequate & most versatile where I paddle.  Leashed to the boat in a long plastic ziplock bag.

Specific  purpose = specific gun.  Example: my nurtia night hunter & bunny gun is a .25 cal custom Crosman scoped air pistol.

So I gotta know what I'm shootin' at.

I've got an old 870 that gets wet more then I do on my duck hunting kayak and it always goes bang.  it's been striped and reblued 2 or 3 times, then I gave up and gave it a rattlecan camo thats held up well.  Been thinkin of taking my shorty 20ga or 12 ga h&r for more of a sporty hunt.

Kayak is only as stable as the kayaker's center of gravity.  I'm too fat, makes mine too high.  A Kayak is too hard to get into with my long legs.  Can't move legs around enough once in.  Impossible to get out of with out getting wet for me.  I no longer do Canoes either.  The Jon Boat or the Cataraft for me.  Got a gun rack on both, handi's fit the rack, and usually have the 30-06 or the 25-06.  The 30-06 has done it's days underwater.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I really hate to say this.  Until just now, I'd say my camo Handi maxi shorty would be it......but....with the help another member here a I'm putting together a Savage 24V Maxi over 20 ga. with choke tubes cut to 18.5 inches.  It may just give the Handi a run for its money.  The only thing that might not work well is it's not a straight grip which would be better for paddling. ::)

My thinking when I'm on the water is what ever I take with me may not make it home unless it floats.  For a canoe/boat gun I would pick up a pawn shop 410 or 20 gauge.  Put the most beat up stock set I have on it and paint it like Sourdough's 06.  If I loose it, back to the pawn shop and repeat.

How long would ( or would it at all?) a handi float with the sythetic stock? I have an old action from a huntsman that may turn into an experiment if someone hasn't tried either by accident or design.

Last year I was sitting on a log in a hardwood swamp with my 20 ga. H&R across my lap and got to thinkin. The old mountain men carried trade guns, most in 62 cal, or about 20 ga. they could load swan shot for birds or round ball for bigger game. He I sat with the same thing and I could swap back and forth with a flick o' the wrist. Buckshot for walkin thru the bush. Slugs for sittin still for a while and some #6 shot if a tree rat should get too noisy. Seemed like to  me I had all the bases covered.
If you're gonna be stupid ya gotta be tuff
