300 Yard Shot with Handi .45-70 on Scope Cam...
« on: November 09, 2012, 04:51:20 PM »
As the title implies. Hit up the range today, got some good footage. Even after getting out there and finding out my scope ring was loose on the mount, a simple re-tighten and the Zero had not moved a hairs worth. Here's the video !

If it had been a Deer or Elk either shot would have knocked it down if you were shooting center of the shoulder.

Tell the Buffalo they can't be killed with a 45-70 at long ranges.

It has been done. I use my Buffalo Classic and shoot 300 yds. at a steel gong. The Classic is sighted in at 200 yds. At 300yds., I have a 35 inch hold over. I put a target on a stick, 35 inches over the steel and hit the steel every time. Great fun.

Nice shot!  Those Black Powder Cartridge Rifle competition guys shoot 45/70's at steel rams out there at 500+ meters.  And like someone said below, tell the buffalo they can't be shot by a 45/70 at 300 yards. Anyone who doubts doesn't know 45/70's.

And what makes me really amused is when the 45/70 is characterized as just a "woods cartridge."

Those were 300 Grain Federal Power Shock(?) soft point loads. Rated at like 1850FPS. This was my first real long shot with this rifle. As mentioned, about 5 minutes prior to these 2 shots being taken, I noticed the scope ring was loose on the mount. Found a flathead in my truck and sinched it back down (expecting my zero to be way off), seconed shot on that bottle and I tagged it.

Super awesome shooting!  :)

Thanks alot Brian, I had to do a double take myself after I saw the mist of the water fall back down from 300 yards off. It was hard to tell with the naked eye, but in the end I gave myself a pat on the back. Keep in mind i'm still under the 6 month mark on firing and getting accustomed to long rifles.

These little Handi Rifle's really are awesome firearms. It just goes to show you can hand one to a still considered "Novice" and expect great performance out of them.

I take my hat of to you man! You have some "6th sense" at your age as a shooter that I have not yet aquired being in my 20's. I envy older guys that can pick up any rifle at the range and show the young'ns how it's done.
AWESOME range. Great shooting with such nice piece of history in his hands. But me....i'll stick to my Scope and Handi combo :D  Open sights and me... not too good. I wear contact lenses and they do some real funky focusing when trying to place a bead or sight over an object that is far away.

I know .45-70 rounds lose there velocity kinda quick compared to other bullets at longer ranges, but I know they gotta have more impact at contact.

When you learn to reload then you should learn to cast your own and shoot black powder,  them the real fun begins.  You will be looking for a trapdoor or a rolling block to shoot.  Its great to pull the trigger and hear the slug hit while the smoke is clearing.

I've seen my eldest brother shoot his Tang sighted Quigley 45-110 at 300 yards and he can ding a 6" steel target about every other shot. He's always been good, and military service made him even better. His son is a Marine Scout Sniper, so I will lose many shooting competitions in the family!

I'm still trying to master my 30/378 WBY and my 300 WIN Mag. Neither are as pretty or as cool as the Quigley, but both will ding the steel target if the shooter has skills to make the shot. And the Quigley cost more than both of the other rifles combined.

I may have to have a BC just for the coolness factor, but my eyes don't work well with steel sights, and I can only imagine how hard it would be to have about 36" between sights on the Quigley. My vision likes to focus NEAR or FAR, but not back and forth quickly - I get stuck and have to rest the eyes. Iron sights whip me.

Kudos to the shooter in the video. Loved it!

Haha, thanks alot man. Yeah I thought for sure i'd have shot a couple down range before even getting close to it. As stated in the video description, 5 minutes prior to this my scope ring was wriggling around on my scope base (like blow on it and it moves, loose). Thought for sure my bullets were gonna be flying far from the crosshairs after the retighten. Surprisingly enough, still dead on !
Haven't shot the Handi since this outing. Been putting money away for my .17HMR. I get it Monday however, so i'm gonna go hit up the range again with both rifles :D
I'll make sure and take some more footage! Thanks again for the compliments guys ! I swear this is my first rifle....hell my first firearm ever. I give all the credit to the rifle/scope combo XD

I know right? It's gotta be a WHOLE other sense of pride at that time. Using factory loads are fun, but I imagine the wow factor shoots up after firing your own rounds down range.

Ive come across posts many a times on sites people stating not to shoot a 45-70 past 150 yards at game. That is the most absurd assertion I have ever seen or heard.
