.45-70 Handi doesn't eject.
« on: November 02, 2012, 12:53:15 PM »
This question regards a .45-70 barrel on a SB-2 receiver.  While I do not know the age of the barrel it appears to be fairly new.  The receiver was made about 1992.  The ejector on this barrel has no spring tension so it, of course, doesn't eject a cartridge upon opening the action.  Comparing it to a .223 barrel one can see a difference in the way the ejector is installed.  I called NEF and talked to their customer service department.  I was told that barrels in that caliber (.45-70) made after 2009 don't eject the cartridge.  Has anyone else heard this?   I apologize if this has been covered but a search did not generate anything useful about the subject.  Thanks

H&R hasn't made an ejector centerfire rifle barrel since about 2007, they're all manual extractors including the 45-70, only rimfire and shotgun barrels still have ejectors. Lots of info on this an hundreds of other things in the FAQs sticky.  ;)

Thanks for that reply.  I read through the FAQs but missed it.

If it's broke and you need to get rid of it, I could take it off your hands ;D   .........Just pullin your leg ::)   It sounds like you have an extractor instead of an ejector. No problems, it just gets the case started for you so you can pull it out. There were some issues with the ejectors failing to remove the spent case because it relies on spring pressure instead if the force of the barrel being opened.

This handi had a .223 ejector barrel on it and it does fail to eject about one round in twenty.  I carry a take down rod just in case.  This .45/70 was a newer barrel and since I don't pay a lot of attention to handi rifles I was unaware they didn't still make an ejector.  I have some shotguns that are extractors and they are fine, in fact preferable, for clay bird shooting.  Thanks for your reply.

Do the FAQs ejector tune and chamber polish on the 223 to eliminate sticking brass.

Tim

I repeat this advice at all websites and in my personal life.

After having a stuck case in my 45-70 years ago I went and polished every chamber on every type of gun I had.   Not one stuck case since, and chambers clean a heck of a lot easier and faster.  Also, I tend to get an extra firing or two out of each case because the chamber isn't causing as much stretching.

Before I even shoot a gun I polish the chambers and lap/polish the bore.

The only rifle barrel I had that had an ejector was my older .44.  Filed the notch off of it to make it an extractor too.  I don't want any metallic clacking coming from my deer guns.  My .30-30 barrel came with the almost silent extractor.  My Parner shotgun is a different matter.  For birds just let it clack and have a quick reload.  For squirrel just break it enough to get your thumb on the back of the spent shell and push hard as you break it the rest of the way for a no metallic noice while reloading.
