am i a redneck
« on: October 20, 2012, 10:19:28 AM »
Had to chuckle today. Was heading to camp with the grandson and wife in the pickup. got just out of town on a back road  and got flagged over by a guy who hit a deer with his navigator. Really yuppy. He was panicing because the deer was still flopping around on the road. I grabbed my glock 23 and popped it in the head. He looked at me slack jawed. I then proceded to carve the hind quarters and back straps out of it. He was about white in the face by then. I asked him if he wanted some venison and he actually turned away and said no! he must have thought he was in deliverance!!

Free venison is good venison!

A good friend of mine is the 1st call on the roadkill list in my town (we have another friend who is a cop in town, how convenient). He always has venison in the freezer. Sometimes moose, too.

Please include me in the Red Neck Crew, and proud of it... Can't remember the number of roadkills that I have enjoyed at the table.. Used to carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back of my pickup.. One night in Dec. '84 after the season closed a fella hit a nice doe in front of me.. All he wanted to know is where's the troopers so he could report it..  I used the plywood for a ramp, put the doe on it, one lift and she was in.  After supper I carved out nice backstraps and hind quarter.  Shared with a friend who went dry during the season..

Funny story. I would of like to have been there. I know I would have said yes to the offer of venison.

My eldest daughter found one in the ditch one night on her way home. Young buck. I called the law, met him at the deer. His front legs were broke. Cop ho hummed around, finally i told him I had my shotgun in the truck. First he wanted to know why I carried a shotgun. After reminding him it is firearms season it was cool. Then he said I could shoot it if I wanted. Said he didn't like shooting animals. The he asked what we should do with it :o . Told him to write out temp tag and I would take it home. Then he asked"what are you going to do with it?"  ;D  I love talking to city people. ;)

Those "meat comes from the freezer" types like that are pretty clueless.  I bet he was mithing hith thtarbuckth right about then.

Well Lloyd, you see there are Two kinds of RedNecks.
(1) The "Country Boy Will Survive" kind ( which you are) practical, moral, and in touch with reality.

And then the (2) "Hey Ya'll, Watch This" kind, in which you have lived to long to qualify for this one, ha!

I grew up with guys who would send me out at camp to shoot a yearling for "camp meat". It was understood then that if it was fully consumed in camp it was "acceptable", ha. I enjoyed it anyway, I was a bullet wound observer way back then too! I saw two big does on my trip to the UP and they were huge...lots of meat! I never had venison ham, other than BBQ the entire thing! Have a good hunt

The only deer I ever hit with a car was right in front of my pastor's house.  The impact broke it's back and it kept fighting with it's front feet to keep going.  It basically was a living rotor tiller and was making it's way right through their garden.  I felt bad, but had nothing in the car to finish it off with.  I ran up to the house and his 8 year old son came to the door and I ask him if his dad was home and he wasn't.  (this was some time ago as he's in his 30's now).  I then ask him if he had an axe and he said no.  So in desperation I ask if they had a hammer and he said sure they did and proceeded to run to the garage.  He opens this little fishing tackle box and there was a 2 lb mini sledge hammer and that was all he had.  I couldn't believe it, but proceeded to run back to the garden where the buck had made it about 30% of the way through the tomato plants and was starting into the cucumbers, making a mess outta everything.  I ran up, not thinking about an impressionable little kid watching me, and proceeded to bash the back of it's head until it died.  When I turned around, I saw him just staring at me with eyes the size of saucers.  Needless to say, the pastor wasn't too happy with me about it.  Years later, his son ended up going into the Army to be a tanker, and I think it was always because of the "example" I'd set that he wanted to be in the Army like me.  Who knows, but it's still talked about by his family to this day.  lol

I hate to put a Southern label on a Yankee that would do the same thing.
I much prefer that this should be labeled a very stoic way of looking logically at a problem and reaching an acceptable solution and a plan of action.
But, That's just me.

Not a deer episode but on the same note.
On my way from Tittusville FL to Sebatian Inlet for the opening of Snook season I came up on a small truck pulled off the side of US1 and the driver standing outside. Had a thought come over me so I pulled in behind him and spinning around going crazy was an over 6' rattler going nuts. I calmly asked the guy what he was going to do with it and he told me, "$%^& I don't want anything to to with that thing". I grab it up, cut the head off and put in the back of my truck.
Now the kicker is my wife is with me and 8 months pregnant, she didn't even think a thing about it.
