180 grain Remington HP's for the maxi
« on: September 30, 2012, 04:20:00 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the Remington 180 HP's in the Maxi?  I know these were a factory offering when they were still in production.  Just wondering how they perform on game as compared to the Hornady XTP's and other bullets???

You might ask up on the H&R forum. There are quite a few Maxis up there ;)

Since you posted this on a pistol forum I am guessing you are shooting this in a pistol.  There are plenty of folks here that shoot max pistols, so you will want to get an opinion here.  Performance will be different in an Encore/Contender than in a Handi.

I did want the answer to come from someone who has shot them in a contender.  I know they aren't suitable for the Handi, the velocities are too high.  I'm shooting them out of a 10" contender, and I finally chrono'd a few.  Getting about 1800fps out of them and a lot of muzzle-flash so I am gonna assume that they are loaded pretty stout.  Brass looks good though.  Hopefully if I'll be able to let ya'll know how they do on deer, I'm planning on killing something this week!

I have shot the Hornady 180 xtp's from my maxi but not the Remingtons. Winchester 296 and a firm crimp should serve you well.

The 1st 100 rounds that I shot were the Remington factory loads. I would have to say that the bullet holds up better than the XTP. I never did have one not punch out the other side on a deer. Since then I reloaded with 180grain XTP's. On 2 deer I found the bullets. One was .671" diameter and weight was 114.7 grains. The second one was .707" diameter and weight was 83.6 grains. Of course the deer that I have hit all have died so they do work. ;)

My favorite bullet for the Max for years was the Hornady 180SSP, but being the skin-flint that I am I switched to the REM 180 when I found a good deal on them in bulk.  Now, other than some cast stuff this is my "go to" bullet for my Max.  It shoots quite accurate and bullet performance is excellent.  This is in a 10" tube.  I'm sure the SSP would outperform the REM at longer ranges, but that's not an issue for me anyway.  Good Shootin'.
