handi 45-70

I was wondering where do the handi files in 45-70 fit in the reloading scale? I mean are they the springfeild load, marline or up to No.1 data as far as the reloading goes. I ended up parting with my guide gun and I still have all my handloads left over (about 120 or so) none are max loads as far as the marlin scale goes and was just wondering if I would have any problems running them through a handi rifle?

You can shoot your reloads.  The Handi will handle more than the Marlin, and almost as much as the Ruger.  When your shoulder separates, you have reached your max!
 
Garrett makes "dangerous game" ammo, and the H&R is listed with the Ruger.
 
This applies to modern H&R's with the SB2 frame, and not the Shikari of course.  (See the FAQ's at the top of this forum).

The handy little Handi  ::)  is amazingly stout, I have loaded a few rounds from the Ruger list (lower to mid-pressure levels) and the only ill effect was wicked recoil.  The muzzle pointed nearly straight up, and my shoulder hurt for several hours.  So like was said earlier, your shoulder will get tired long before you over stress the gun.


I have read somewhere that the internal capacity of the .45-70 cartridge with a bullet seated has a powder column length of 1 7/16 inches. So when fired and the bullet moves 1 7/16", the volume for the expanding gasses has doubled, so it is really hard to over pressure a 45-70 with any sane load.

This rifle can handle more than my shoulder.  Seems alot of other shoulders feel the same way.  I like it anyway and reload to shoulder guidance.

I have bursitis in my right (shooting) shoulder. Trail Boss powder has allowed me to keep shooting my 45-70s and 30-06s. I don't hunt, enjoy busting the gong though.
