Tried 45-70 max loads?

I spend more time on cast bullet specific forums, that's my thing. I shoot cb's in everything. Fairly often some one will ask 'what's the limit?' for 45-70 loads in a Handi. Usually it's the result of seeing the different load levels published in the loading manuals. There's always a standard reply, from some one, pointing out the gun will stand more than you can. I agree, been there, done that. Now I look for lighter and lighter loads for my H&R 45-70. More fun, less pain. I got some Trail Boss and Ranch Dog 350s to mess with.  But, I'm wondering what others have done as far as pushing the limit. What's the heaviest load you've tried? I'm just curious, not likely to go there again myself. I'm definitely not advocating heavy loads or exceeding published maximums, just wondering.

I couldnt get enough velocity out of that little 45-70 case so i reamed it to a 45-120 ;D ::)

I've used Barnes H4198 data up to 54.5gr for the 300gr TSX-FB in my Ultra Hunter, their max of 57.5gr is rated at 55kpsi.

400 grain jacketed over 51.5 H4198 in an unmodified 22" Handi.  Big recoil, bigger divot in forehead.
 
Also shot two of MAC's "bruiser reloads", 405 grain gas checked Cast Performance with a bunch of RL7 (I pulled a bullet and weighed the charge and no way will I post the result :o ).  Made the first load I listed seem like a trapdoor round. ;D   Ask Dinny, I heard MAC's loadings in 45-70 are his favorites. ::) ;)

Tim, I don't even play golf and I know you're supposed to replace those divots ;)

My .45-70 and I like the 405 Remington over IMR4198 for 1950 fps.  I don't believe it is max, but it does get your attention.  It's not much fun off the bench, but where I use it, it can reach out and get the job done.

405 gr gas-checked Montana Bullet Works cast FP over 50 gr RL7.  :o  And that's NOT max.
Immediately after that range session, I installed a Limbsaver recoil pad for the Handi and ordered a box of Hornady 300 gr JHPs. Don't think I'll ever use up those 405s!

Hornady lists 400gr jacketed RL7 loads to 55.5gr @50kcup(50kpsi).

Wow. Some of those loads could probably be reasonable rhinocerous loads. I'm a big fan of penetration in hunting loads, but geeze. I'm going way off topic but there was a famous incident in Sacramento years ago, The 'Good Guys' store was in hostage mode. A sherrif's sniper fired a shot at a bad guy with a .223, it deflected off a glass door. The bad guys then proceeded to shoot the hostages. Maybe if the sniper had a 45-70 Handi with one of these monster loads those people would still be here. If I was a SWAT guy I'd have a big bore in the arsenal, just in case.

Wow, 52 gr. was more than I wanted with my BC and a 32" barrel.  I personally like 49 gr. RL 7 with the same bullet.  ;)

BBF, I'm with you on that load.
If you scope, an in-expensive scope that will take the shock? (fogproof,shockproof,waterproof).....Centerpoint 2-7X32mm.
Long eye relief and good enough (for me) to 100 yrds. Haven't had it hit me yet. It's not perfect, in fact the edges are foggy...But I don't shoot from the edges.

SR4759 over whatever a 2.8 Lee dipper gives.  I   under the skin didn't write down the weight.  It chronos at 1560.  20 rounds left a bruise and broken blood vessel in my shoulder that leaked blood under the skin  all the way to my elbow.  I should have gone to  the doc, but was too stubborn.  It finally cleared up.  I will not bench that thing again even with a pad.  I am considering a mercury recoil device.


I also have the 3 1/2 12 ga. barrel on that gun.  Tried ONE 2 oz shell off hand.  Never again, I think it would literally break bones after a few rounds.

I've got one of those mercury gizmos that is not being used currently.
My answer to the recoil was to have synthetic stocks on the Handis and fill the butt with  play sand encased in denim material. The balance of the rifle changed a little which I like and the extra weight does reduce free recoil.
 
I stay within upper Trapdoor to lower Marlin pressure loads. I have a few new commercial cast bullets to try out once it cools down and the bloodsuckers have returned to the place that spawned them.

A 100% load density of TrailBoss under the 350 or 405 cast Lee bullet is just fine in the H&R for me.

i like to shoot mine a lot i love trail boss. don't play the max game anymore. i like to watch guys shot the 45-70 in there derringers though crazy. :o

 With a Postel type bullet the base just enters the rifling when the tip sticks out of the muzzle. ;D ;D

those Crators seem far too narrow on the nose for my 45/70's.  the bores measure .455 or so.... 

I traded away a Lyman 462560 for that very reason

My current load is a 300gr Remington  HP with 51grs of H4198 . Seems to work well on the local pigs and whitetails.
