Kansas governor signs bill effectively banning Islamic lawKANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) - Republican Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a bill aimed at keeping state courts and agencies from using Islamic or other non-U.S. laws when making decisions, his office said on Friday, drawing criticism from a national Muslim group.
The law has been dubbed the "sharia bill" because critics say it targets the Islamic legal code. Sharia, or Islamic law, covers all aspects of Muslim life, including religious obligations and financial dealings. Opponents of state bans say they could nullify wills or legal contracts between Muslims.
Supporters said the law will reassure foreigners in Kansas that state laws and the U.S. Constitution would protect them. Opponents said it singled out Muslims for ridicule and was unnecessary because American laws prevail on U.S. soil.
Sherriene Jones-Sontag, a spokeswoman for the governor, said in an e-mail that the bill "makes it clear that Kansas courts will rely exclusively on the laws of our state and our nation when deciding cases and will not consider the laws of foreign jurisdictions."
Legislators supporting the bill said there were many cases around the country where judges or state agencies cited sharia law in deciding cases, especially involving divorce-related custody and property matters where Islamic code differs from U.S. law.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington denounced the Kansas law and said it is considering legal action.
About 20 states have considered similar legislation but the Kansas law is the only one signed in recent weeks, council spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.
"It's unfortunate the governor chose to pander to the growing Islam-phobia in our society that has led to introduction of similar unconstitutional and un-American legislation in dozens of state legislatures," Hooper said.
Hooper said legislators have often referred to sharia law in supporting such legislation, but he said they take the word out of the bill to stave off legal challenges. The Kansas bill does not mention sharia.
Federal courts struck down an Oklahoma law voters approved in 2010 that barred state judges from considering sharia law in making decisions. The court called the law discriminatory.

I wonder just how well our constitution would be accepted in Iran, Iraq or Saudi Arabia ?  But of course they have no concept of fair play.
If they get upset enough, perhaps they will go back to where sharia IS practiced !  We should be so lucky.... ;)

So this is what it is coming to. States having to sign anti Islam laws. Why do we have to make any laws in that regard? Are our laws and Constitution not enough?
Its coming, all we have to do is keep telling ourselves the Muslims are here to live in peace, and abide by our laws.

DDZ, I wish it didn't have to come to this. BUT, there has been several court cases where a judge has ruled in sharia law behalf. Why, I don't know. To bad it's against our law, to grab these judges, shake them until their brain rattles, or, they can pack up with the muslim, and both move out. That's the way it should be. gypsyman

Sorry YT3, IF, there had not been any cases decided in favor of sharia law, I might possible see your side. BUT, since we've had anal judges side with the muzzies, we have to hold the judge's hand and say nicely, No,No, we are in America, not the ME. You could do me a favor thou, lend me those rose colored glass's you look thru when I go fishing, and maybe I can see a sheephead turn into a walleye.(By the way, sheephead up here on Lake Erie, are now called West Virgina walleye, as they don't have any teeth. :D )gypsyman

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2014 for Mr. Brownback.  We all knew what we were getting when we voted for him, and yet he's somehow been more of far Right cusader than I expected.  The population of Kansas is roughly broken into thirds 1/3 Fiscal conservatives (mostly in Johnson County, where the money is) 1/3 Social Conservatives (everyone West of Lawrence or South of KC) and 1/3 Democrat (KC, Topeka, Witchita, and Lawrence).  When the socal conservatives push too far the other two thirds usually band together and get rid of the ideologues.  Check the career of Phil Kline or that time we outlawed evolution for historical reference.

The big item for the fiscal JoCo guys was greater control over the amount of money that could be generated by our local areas or schools.  This did not pass or even come for a vote.  We got anti abortion, anti sharia, and a host of other social Conservative gems but they didn't even bother to draw redistricting lines, depite the fact that it's, you know, their job.  They passed a tax cut as a bluff, except it got signed.

I don't think there will be much change in this cycle, but history has suggested that this type of over-reach leads to a pendulum swing in the next few years.

Who said it has anything to do with Christians being persecuted? It has everything to do with the Muslim infiltration into America, and them not wanting to assimilate to our ways and laws. Their purpose is to overtake, and change laws to their liking. I could care less if Muslims came here to assimilate, but they don't. They want their laws enforced.
We have not seen Sharia law used YET.
Yet it surprises me the number of people that can't seem to see any of it coming. I guess when there is so many people today with the "its all about me attitude", and the "it isn't happening now, who cares" attitude, I can understand the "I don't care what Muslims do as long as they don't affect me", thinking. Instead of looking for the freight train coming, its so much easier to just blame the Christians for whining to much. Pay no attention, its just them whining Christians again.

Extremism in the defense of American ideals is not a fault and in fact is not extreme at all.  The extremists are the ones who are able to rationalize every aspect of liberalism as a means to make our society more accomodating.

I did. I repeatedly hear Christians of the more fundamentalist variety act as though they a persecuted minority, which is just silly.

YT3, google up sharia law cases in the US, and you can see for yourself. Cases decided by a supposed American judge, in favor of a muslim with sharia law. Shouldn't be. If a court case is settled with sharia law in this country, where does it end up. Take a look at France,England, most of Europe. Do you really want this country to end up like them? Maybe you don't care if you don't have any kids, and just believe you can get thru your lifetime without it affecting you. Not me. The way this country is falling apart, my kids will have a rough time as it is. Let alone with a population of people that think that they should be judged differently.(We already have some of those, their called politicians) gypsyman

YT, how old are you?  I grew up in the 1950's and 1960's.  Businesses were closed on Sunday, because most people went to church.  Only business open were hotels/motels, some restaurants, one drug store rotated with others.  Doctor's rotated house calls on weekends.  Some but not all gas stations opened.  A 12 year old paperboy could save his money and go down to the nearest hardware store and buy a .22 rifle.  We could walk through our neighborhood on the way to the nearest woods to squirrel hunt.  Christians and Christianity were respected and never a bad word against us.  Holywood had good Christian movies, like The 10 Commandments, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and Ben Hur.  Watch some of the old Rifleman TV shows.  Morality was taught, and reverence to God.

What Happened.
1) An Atheist had prayer and Bible reading thrown out of school, even though we continued for several more years.
2) Liberals hijacked the Civil Rights Movement and turned it into a Welfare Plantation.
3) Hippies threw out the sanctity of marriage and every thing moral and right, with free love, drugs, dropping out of society, pushing for everything to be free.

In 1960, 50% of Americans attended church, blacks were entering the middle class without welfare, you could leave your doors open and unlocked at night.  Without air condition in the south it was hot, and we only had a screen doors with the main door open to cool the house.  Crime was low, divorce was low, there was more respect for the law and each other.  Everyone I know over 40-50 all say things were better then.  Most women didn't have to work, thus kids were better off, especially in summers and after school.  More control and disipline. because, at least one parent was always there for them.

Today, we have to lock our doors, keep guns ready, be careful where we go at night.  Divorce with all associated problems, single moms, kids without fathers, kids left to themselves.  A Muslim family lived next door to us one time, but they obeyed the law of the majority and didn't try to change our laws.  They were from Syria.

you know, DD, I expect that if you were to poll/talk to every Muslim in the country, a great many would be like that family you mention. Back then, people - some of whom call themselves Christians? - weren't advocating for their extermination/deportation/suspension of civil rights.

  Well..DUH !

top  January 10, 2012 Court: Oklahoma can't enforce Sharia law ban ReutersBy Robert Boczkiewicz | Reuters – Tue, Jan 10, 2012  DENVER (Reuters) - A federal appeals court upheld an injunction against a voter-approved ban on Islamic law in Oklahoma on Tuesday, saying it likely violated the U.S. Constitution by discriminating against religion. A three-member panel of the Denver-based U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that the rights of plaintiff Muneer Awad, a Muslim man living in Oklahoma City, likely would be violated if the ban on Sharia law takes effect. The decision upholds the ruling of a lower federal court. "While the public has an interest in the will of the voters being carried out ... the public has a more profound and long-term interest in upholding an individual's constitutional rights," the appeals court said in a 37-page written decision. The Washington, D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations welcomed the ruling, calling it "a victory for the Constitution and for the right of all Americans to freely practice their faith." Oklahoma's "Save Our State Amendment," which was approved by 70 percent of state voters in 2010, bars Oklahoma state courts from considering or using Sharia law. The lawsuit challenging the measure was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Awad, who is director of the Oklahoma chapter of CAIR. A federal judge in Oklahoma City issued a court order in November 2010 barring the measure from taking effect while the case is under review, finding a substantial likelihood that Awad would prevail on the merits. The Council said the Oklahoma amendment is among 20 similar proposed laws introduced in state legislatures nationwide. Defenders of the amendment say they want to prevent foreign laws in general, and Islamic Sharia law in particular, from overriding state or U.S. laws. But foes of the Oklahoma measure, also called State Question 755, have argued that it stigmatizes Islam and its adherents and violates the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment prohibition against the government favoring one religion over another. State Senator Anthony Sykes, one of the measure's sponsors, called the decision an attempt "to silence the voice of 70 percent of Oklahoma voters. At some point we have to decide whether this is a country of, by and for the judges, or of, by and for the people." Opponents also say it could nullify wills or legal contracts between Muslims because they incorporate by reference specific elements of Islamic prophetic traditions.

Ain't it a shame when the Muslims don't get their way?     They pursue a separate and equal legal system besides our current legal system, and it is Christians that are persecuted by the left.  Christians cannot perform personal prayers in school or at school events, cannot say "under God" in school reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and cannot wear clothes that support Christianity.    That being said, it is Muslims that seem to get preferred status by libs and Democrats, while Christians are considered the bane of civilization.

If given unfettered power, liberals and other Muslim sycophants will do anything they can to get sharia law instituted in this country, while Christians and Jews are given the status of second-class citizens.

Ironglow, i'm wondering... did you realize that Grandpa Walton was a communist, AND gay?

Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.
