She could have been killed by being stupid enough to drink to that extend and I know I'm going to get flak, there has got to be some common sense when you have those Castle Laws.

The woman wasn't armed or threatening. Unless the guy was old and feeble he could have restrained her in some other manner.

Just because a door is unlocked, it doesn't give anyone--drunk,or not--the right to walk on in.  If it is a boat, you'd better have permission to even walk on board.  I once witnessed a druggie almost get blown away when he clambered on board a boat, which was tied up at a guest dock.  The drug addled dipwad was met by the owner of the yacht who was armed with a rifle and had every intent to use it if the intruder hadn't left very quickly.

If people insist on drinking, or drugging themselves into a stupor, they should know that that doesn't give them any special privilege as to their conduct.

What is it they say? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

"I was drunk" is not a free pass. A conscious decision was made to drink to excess. College graduate right?  I say she deserves to be convicted. I would be okay with a light sentence.

I leave my doors unlocked, if they get past my chocolate lab and my mastiff then they have to contend with a mossberg pump loaded with buck & ball.

It was dark, the homeowner had no way of knowing who she was or if she was armed or not.  The home owner had every right to protect himself and his family by shooting her.  He did good.

Had a friend named Marvin in Arizona, real nice guy.  Worked with my wife and she really thought a lot of him.  He was known not to make the best decisions all the time.  Just stupid little things that people thought were funny.  One night he got really drunk.  Someone dropped him off at our apt complex.  Marvin lived in the building straight across from us.  Well old Marvin got his numbers confused and tried to get into the wrong apartment.  When his key would not open the door, he just kicked it in.  The occupant had a gun, but she decided not to use it.  A man had been stalking her and she knew him.  She was not afraid of the guy, but she was really angry with him following her.  Thinking it her stalked she wanted to teach him a lesson.  So instead of the gun, she grabbed a softball bat.  She beat Marvin severely, breaking both collar bones, one arm, one leg, several fingers, and ribs.  Along with a concussion.

Once the woman found out it was Marvin, and not her stalker she felt so guilty, she went to see Marvin everyday while he was in the Hospital.  Marvin said while in the hospital, "Wish she had shot me, that would have been quick, instead of so much suffering'.  When Marvin got out of the hospital, Marvin quite drinking.  He said "One near death experience was enough".

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

How did you know it was a woman?
How did you know the intruder wasn't armed?
How did you know the intruder was just a mixed up drunk?
Did you get all your info ---after the facts---?
In the real world most times you don't get to question the intruder as to who they are and what they are doing in YOUR bedroom.
If you are the type to ask questions to strangers that stumble into your bedroom at night then I hope you're never in this stiuation.
And if you ever are ,,,then it's been nice knowing you! R.I.P

The home owners must really be un prepared or a couple wusses . When I lived in an apartment I had a really big drunk guy kick down the front door about 6 am sunday morning. That woke me up . I grabbed the 1911 and met him on the steps comming up to the bed room. He turned and run off.
So from experince why shoot if you are not in danger ? and danger would be if the bad guy was armed , comming at you with intent to do harm . So did happy home owner turn on a light and look ? was the girl armed ?
Most stand your ground laws don't give the person being attacked any more privlige they just cause the govt. to have proof of wrong doing before making an arrest. No I don't know there law to the letter, maybe someone who does can add . In many places the person being attacked was expected to retreat but often that was not a good option . In cases where a drunk husban was attacking the wife would it be a good idea for the wife/mother to leavr children in the home with an enraged drunk ? No and cases went to the supreme court in several states and now has changed the laws to protect those who can't retreat for good reason. These new laws will be tested in court .

To the best of my knowledge it is still a capital offense to unlawfully enter an occupied home at night in Alabama. I believe the official charge is night time burglary of an occupied dwelling.

I don't believe tho that any evidence has to be shown that burglary was the intent as that is automatically assumed under the law if someone unlawfully enters an occupied home at night.

I can think of no lawful or accepted reason for anyone to go into the home of another at night without being invited in. Drunk or high on drugs is not an excuse nor should it be under the law.

I see nothing in the article that would tell me they knew she was of no danger or unarmed. She was told to stop and leave and failed to do so. She got shot. Seems to be that she should have expected that to be the result of entering someone else's home after dark without permission.

None of us were there so can't know the exact circumstances the couple faced nor if their decision to shoot was the right one or not.

GB I didn't say they were in the wrong or that she was in the right. But anyone who arms thenselves should also have other means , less lethal means to use if killing someone is not nessary. Did they turn on a light and look ? maybe they did not have time the article does not say. Only the shooter can ansewer if he really feared for his life and if he can handle the responsiblity of using deadly force. But like abortion being legal is not always the right thing to do IMHO.

Dunno about you but I suspect in most bedrooms the light switch is by the door of the bedroom. That's about as remote as anything in the room can get from the bed in my case. Would be kinda hard to get to it without passing an intruder in my case. No I have no lamp by the bed.

I think gunowners need to quit second guessing the decisions made by other gunowners regarding life or dead decisions regarding should they or should they not have fired. Iffen ya ain't there ya just can not know if it was the right and proper decision for them at that moment. Some here sound more like anti gun folks than gun owners to me. Some I'm not sure I've ever seen make a post regarding guns or to sound like they actually own one when making a comment. Nope I ain't calling names but I'm sure those for whom the shoe fits know to wear it.

I keep a flash light by my gun , I have no problem with self defense what so ever and think it should be applied when needed. I just believe that it should be a case of self defense . I also believe that if you are serious about self defense you should not have shooting as the only option. In the case noted the home owner wasn't serious about self defense since he didn't lock his door. I may be alone in my thoughts but as gun owners we need to show responsiblity in judgement and if possible make the effort to know the difference in an attack and a mistake or at least put our selves in a situation where we will have warning . If the drunk woman had encountered a locked door the out come could have been much different.

I still say there's something really fishy with this story, and not a gun defense story..   This story is about two well known and published shrinks. One published story is about their adventures touring nudist camps. Then the wife has a standing order of protection from a  shizo 'patient' stalking her for years. This is common in the psychairtry world. And they live on a remote luxury home and don't lock their door or set their alarm?  C'mon, how dumb can cops be anyway?
.Ms Ripple's defense attorney Colette Cribari said Saturday the incident was "out of character" for Ripple, who has volunteered in soup kitchens in Boulder County, helped organize a campus coat drive last winter and spent the summer of 2010 teaching English to children in Guatemala. Ms Ripple is a 95 lb waif, and now it appears the Justice's don't want tresspassing charges pressed.
