So what are your most used handi calibers?
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:27:45 AM »
OK......Since the .444 Marlin 45-45 debate I kept the 45-70, an bought another 45-70. After getting my head thumped here a few times  ;D . So I like the handi rifle light, accurate, is a very fun rifle to shoot. So what calibers do you enjoy shooting the most. If the commie barrel was more available it would probably be  #1 due to cheap ammo. ;)

Happy shootin'

for funnin' around I take one of the .243's.  My .308 may be the next go to when I get it scoped to suit myslef (want a 1-4); it is a bull and seems to be a good knock around gun.  The .45-70 kicks too much, and 25-06 is a bit specialized.

Of ones I don't have, a 7-08 would fill a lot of "needs".

44\445sm handi, then my 223 ultra. 45-70 is fun but too much recoil for long sessions and my 35 whelen has been my problem child spending more time in a ups truck to and from ilion than in my gun cabinet:( On my way to range shortly with the whole handi family tho!

my most used is my 243 and second would be a toss up between the 357Max and my 30-30 . my gun club has a couple matches where the 243 can be used and mine is very accurate so it gets the most use while the 357Max and 30-30 are just fun to shoot ;D

It's a toss-up for me either the .357 in all three caliber options or the .32-20 with the wide range of loads I use.  Both fun and cheap to shoot.  We're asking "most used" not necessarily favorite.

I was thinking the same the .223 or .357 would of been some of the more popular due to ammo and reloading.

Not sure. It should be my 22 rimfire but my teen son seems to be distracted nowadays by other things. Maybe my 30-30 Topper (on an sb2 receiver so that counts as a Handi, right?). Maybe my 35 Rem. The rest are out of ammo. 90 degrees today and looks like it is here to stay so maybe my "Handi" Deerhunter Video game will be #1.

Since you said the most used.  It would have to be a toss up between my .22 and .357 barrel.  I take them every time I go to the range.  They're just fun to shoot.

Most used......equates to me as number of rounds downbore. My ol' 22 Mag UV heavy barrel wearing CR carbine wood has had about 2000 rounds, I guess; mostly Win. Dynapoint 45 gr. copper plated lead HP.
Normally it would be a 22LR, for me, but one local club has a side match to the Buff Gun matches where pistol calibers and rimfires shoot similar, but smaller targets. There was another match, 'The Ol' Varmints' (originally intended to get the old varmint rifles out of the closet) and I grew fond of the UV over my handloaded with lead 22Hornets and a tricked out Win. Low Wall with a Mdl 52 barrel chambered to 22 Mag. The others are gone now but the UV has stayed.......
The big CFs get played with some, but not like the RFs. It is just too easy to grab a few on up to a box of RFs and go shoot.

My most meat in the freezer handi is the 7-08. But for a while the 30-30 topper had the most range shots... But the 7-08 would be voted my go to gun.

Hello,

I have several Handis and every one of the is fun to shoot. My second favorite is a 308 Ultra that has proven to be a very effective tool on deer, coyotes, and paper. Loaded with some 165 gr. SST's it is a pleasure to shoot, and makes a nice slick hole through an 8 in steel plate at 300 yards.

Now, when you can repeatedly shoot 3 consecutive 350 gr JSP slugs into groups that can be covered with a nickel, that is some big fun. I shoot my 45/70 Handi all year long, and make sure to keep plenty of handloads ready. I love to go down to my range and smash the steel plate at 300 yards. I have taken deer at over 200 yards a few times and shot a coyote through both shoulders at 210 yards. This is one very accurate rifle.

I have been considering trying some different loads, but I will likely continue pressing the 350's on top of a good charge of Varget since it will shoot 1/2 " groups at 100 yards. There is something quite satisfying about taking a $200 old fashioned push button single shot hammer gun and shooting a huge hole through anything you choose to aim at.

30-06, 25-06, 35 Whelen, 223, and 45-70.  The .243, and .17HMR just don't see that much action anymore.  Got tired of walking up on Grizzlies with the .17 in my hand.  Guite carrying the .17 and son't see near as many Grizzlies.

I would say 30-30 then surprising but my 20 guage ultra slug heavy barrel with lam thumbhole. It is so accurate its scarry. But thats because my 44 mag and 357 max and 223 havent been deveolped yet fully.
