Nope, no crimp.  Don't use it, really don't need it.  Set'em up about .020-.040 off the lands, good dose of aa1680, and ...

I like to crimp when I can.

Necessary... Well with some of the powders used in the Maxi a good firm crimp will yield a better more complete and consistant burn... No different then it does with 357, 41 and 44 mag loadings.

The bullet your using, if it has a canalure makes no difference. The powder your using and the action or circumatances one is using determines that.

Try it both ways as it really dosen't matter what we say, if your barrel shoots better one way use that way...

Plus 1 on what cw said.  In my limited experience with the cartridge the powder and the gun seem to be the factors.  I have developed a couple of loads for mine that I don't even size the case, works just fine.  Goat

I use a fairly heavy crimp since I only use H110 in my maxi.
I don't use SSP's either, have had much better accuracy and terminal performance with XTP's.
I found the expansion of SSP's terrible on deer.

Something intresting I noticed while doing some research regarding loading for the max. Lots here seem to use aa1680 with the 180sspb from hornady. I took a look at accurate web load site and it shows in the contender 10" barrel a col of 2.35 and a start load of 27 and max of 30 with that combination in a contender barrel. This leaves about .220 of bullet in the case a not close to the cannelure. It is only listed as giving a 28,000 presure. This is a gain of 150 ft second compaired to the max load with w296 which is 21 grains and is at the cannelure. The 296 pressure though is at 48,000. I know 296 runs high pressure but in your opinion would leaving the bullet out a little further and slowly increasing the powder charge up say to 22 or 23 increase or decrease the pressure with w296 while also increasing speed. I know there was a post where someone was doing this in standard 357 mag but couldnt find it.

In black and white With NO variables, YES. Simply searing to bullet out to increase case cap will reduce pressures. The thing is powders like H110/296 are very finicky. Do you notice how there is usually one or two loads for them? No "starting" loads and warni vs about reduced loadings? Loading OVER published max dosent carry such warnings because well they already told you what the MAx is so only fool hardy souls would attempt more powder. BUT many could surmise less powder could not hurt.... Well with these and some other powders YES it can!

On the other side, where you are eluding to, pressures raise very dangerously fast! Just as I told the author of the 357 thread you are in uncharted DANGERIOUS waters.

Personally I would scrap your idea based on that powder. Switch to 4227, RL7 or even aa1680 as the pressure levels are not so violent and you are less likely to grenade your firearm as the case cap is t enough as it could be with 296/H110 ect.

I know what your thinking with this and it's something most loaders have and continue to do but know with some powders it's not a good idea. In other words NOT always black and white.

I agree with the others on different rifles liking different things. However, I will add that a heavy roll crimp has allowed me the best accuracy from my Maxi rifles with AA1680 and the Hornady SS-PBs.

Thanks, Dinny

Here's a great discussion on the 357 Maxi that's relevent to this discussion, IMO, other than not having any AA1680, there's no reason to use H110/W296, AA1680 provides excellent velocity and accuracy with less pressure, what's not to like about that!  ;)
