Any Big Bore Fans?
« on: January 26, 2004, 02:15:08 PM »
I shoot a bolt action with a rear grip. 41x240 weatherby. Cut down to fit a short action, so the case is only 2.170 long and I shoot 300 grain hawk rond nose at 2100fps. out of a 14 1/2" bbl. With a oil filter style muzzle brake. I have only shot whitetails with it so far! Anybody else into hand cannons?..................actually it is a pussycat to shoot, the brake really works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Gun

I have an Encore in .454 and .444 (shot 15 point non-typical 2 yrs ago) and my newest toy--S&W 500. Just got a mould for it and will be working up loads to use this deer season. Squirrels too, maybe :-D

I have a 22 LR.  Muzzle blast takes some getting used to but if you hang in there and work your loads up, you can get used to it and move up to the 22 Mag in a short time.  When you get to that level, you know when you touch it off................. :D

I have a 15" Encore in 338 Win Mag that I have taken a Moose and an
antelope with so far.  It's a Bulberry barrel with one of their integral
muzzle breaks (that works great).  A spring bear is my next quarry.
I just received another 15" barrel for the Encore in 375 H&H.  I'm waiting
for the scope rings and am looking forward to shooting it (I think).  THe first shot is always interesting.

I also have a SRH in 454, non-braked, and find it to be as much of a handful as the braked encore.  Works fine on whitetails.

Does shooting my friend's .50 Alaskan count?  I put about 10 640 grain APIs at 1785 fps through it Sunday.  Also shot a 450 grain Barnes FP over 59.0 grains of Reloader 7.  It expanded to a diameter larger than a quarter after passing through 14" of wet phonebooks.

Other than that, the largest big bore handgun I own is a .475 Linebaugh.

MS Hitman, That's cranking out 4529 ft lbs. of energy! How long of barrel and what does he have for a muzzle brake? Them 640's should be a great gopher blaster!

Believe the barrel is 15" with the SSK muzzle brake.  JD made the barrel for him.  We loaded 54.0 of Reloader 7 behind the 640s; that may be a tad hot.  We're gonna look into it some more.

Personally, I've got the usual .375 JDJ, .475 Linebaugh, .454 Casull, etc.; stuff the big bore fanatics love so well.

HM,
You are going to end up with an encore before this sight in is over with aren't you.  You won't be able to stand it much longer for sure, I see it already.  I'll say this, the alaskan that he is talking about is about the meanest looking thing you will ever see.  It has the fish gill arrestor on it and its "gills" are large enough for me to put my pinky in.  I've wanted one for a while but I'll have to shoot this one first to see if I REALLY want one in the future.  Will be a step down from my 22 MAG but you know, your wrists and all can't take that kind of punishment forever.  We were looking at the recoil numbers yesterday on this load with the 640s and it was something like 112 ft/lb.  My Freedom Arms 454 is around 38 with a 300 grain at 1650.  The taylor Knockout is the goodie on the alaskan load.  With the 642 at 1785, it was something like 84.  Neat numbers to toy around with.  GS

handcannon, My brother started a 458x2 on a Mark X action with a 14" barrel from Douglas, but lost interest, I guess! A friend has one in a remington short action with a dainty 20" bbl. Very cute rifle, and a good shooter!

bs;yea they are a very good shooter.mine is a 12" barrel with JD brake on it.and i get 2200fps with the 300gr,and 1800fps with the 500gr..the ultra mag xp-100 i get 3300fps with 125gr,3150fps with 150gr,3100fps with 165gr,2975fps with 180gr,2600fps with the 220gr.the 416 rem mag does 2000fps with the 350 mag tip very first load in the barrel,no time yet to see what this baby will do, it to comes from ssk,it has the fish gill brake on it to,and it is a full bull very massive .

Zeus, hitman. zeus is one of my other computer names any way did jd give you any load data for the 50A and if so is your load safe.that just seem a little high to me.i have a 50 xp-100 coming from him and looked at the 50A in the encore and did some load work up on the computer not real life and did not come close to your velocity.not saying you are not getting it.because he might not have fully devoloped the load yet for this round.in my 50 i am supposed to get 1900fps with a 600gr bullet and about 3000fps with the 300gr.and that 4800 ft/lb.and my recoil is right there with you also.if it is safe then damn it i could have saved about $1000.if not becareful.and dont get me wrong i am not trying to pick  a fight are anything like that.i just did a lot of computer work on these two rounds, and he might of have changed the twist rate or something else.and dont want anyone getting hurt

Handcannon,

We thought it to be on the high side as well.  Only thing being that JD did his load development with a shorter barrel, by nearly three inches.  Will this make a large difference; don't know without some extra testing.  Most likely, we'll go back over the range of data JD provided and see how it tracks.  I'll post this after we get to it.   I didn't think you were trying to pick a fight or anything.  Sometimes the models are spot on, other times they are just random number generators.

JD does supply data with all his barrels.

I'm a real lover of extremes of calibers. I like to shoot the .22's and then bigbores like the 44, 454, 45-70.

I love shooting the Super 16 in 45-70 without the deafening muzzle tamer. I have killed a number of animals with it and they pretty much give up the ship when hit in the right spot.

Any 50 is a big bore to me. My votes in!

Guess I'm a big bore nut too. Got a 41, couple of 44s, a 625, 454, 475 and a 500 on the way from John. Just now starten to get a taste for big bore rifles. I broke the ice with blr in 450 marlin. We'll see how that goes.

No one happens to have a winchester 70 classic action laying around for sale do you? If you do please let me know.

Good luck and be safe

Hey Scott,

Good to see you are hanging in there down in LA.  50 caliber is definitely a big bore.

What are you thinking about building on the Model 70 action?
